A Few Wee Beasties (Skaerune')

Recommended Posts

So here are some beasties from Skaerune, sans art. (Art is a long way off at this point). There are a few system specific bits:

  • AUR = Aura (specific to Skaerune, not Q21 in general)
  • Soul Magic = Divine Magic
  • Spiral Magic = Spirit, Battle, Common magic.

Would love to hear what people think. Neither of these is a playable PC race (though if the game became popular enough I could see that being a thing). The Elf is one of the Mythical beings created by the interactions of the people and the world itself. The Rakshasa are the latest power on the world, ruling the Glorious Empire from the Fourth City.

Each city will come with its own unique brand of... mythic characters. So far the Second City will have Elves and Dwarves. The Rakshasa are not "myth" characters but they are are related to the culture of the Fourth City (Indo-asian). The First City I have not decided on quite yet. The Third City will be dynastic Egypt (not Ptolymeic) and some Arabian and African elements. So ghoouls may well be "Mythic" creatures as opposed to the traditional undead. I just did not want another game where elves and dwarves were Tolkien knock offs or shoe horned into the world because of tradition. The dwarves will be kind of jerks, loners, and not pleasant beings to run into.

So a few more beasts done this week.  I present the Cormoran Giant and the Bakemono. The Bakemono is going to appear in the Quick Start guide and feature in one of the adventures I am writing for it. Also the file for the Bakemono is spelled wrong so don't worry about that. Bakemono is the correct spelling.

EDITED: Also these two are the first two to use my final format that will appear in the book (and subsequent books etc..) I think it works better than what I had before.

Looks good! Could I ask what the PER stat is? And what does SRN and AUR signify?

PER = Personality. It is not just how likable or not a character is, but how strong their personality is both in terms of how they interact with others and how strong their convictions are. It plays a roll in two skill sets (Communication and Intuition) as well as being part of the base for both SRN and AUR.

SRN = Strain. This replaces Fatigue that some folks are familiar with. Some magics use Strain as does combat and Parrying in particular causes strain loss. It is a mixture of physical and mental doggedness. SRN = (CON + PER)/2

AUR = Aura. Aura simply began as a way of codifying how much presence a person has and at one point was called Presence (many iterations ago). Now it is important in magic, especially Soul (Divine) Magic. The way I am working Soul Magic, the spell level determines how much of the Aura is used in effects. For example Heal / Harm 1 costs 1 MP to use and its effect is equal to 1/4. rounded up, of the caster's AUR. So if the caster has an AUR of 12, that would be a net effect of 3 (Heal or Harm). Some Spiral and Sorcery will suppress or increase or even destroy Aura. Aura is also used for detecting someone physically or magically. The higher your AUR the easier you are to find.

And thanks! I really like how the bestiary is coming along.

Hey Sean,

Just wanted to say that I like the creature/race write-ups. Its a nice format.

I did notice however that most of your averages as detailed on the typical creature are not true to the average that would be produced by rolling the dice. 2d6+6 for example will produce an average of 13 not 14, 2d6+8 should be 14 not 15, and 2d6+4 should be 11 not 12 for example.

The easiest way to figure it when averaging 2 dice is to determine the low average and high average and add them together. So 2d6 would average a 3 and a 4 for a 7, then add any bonus points.

No disrespect if you already knew this and their just typos, I just wanted to point it out incase you didn't know.

Like what I see though,

Rod

No problem at all. I was going to go thoroughly over those in edits so I appreciate you picking up on it, as I could have forgotten :) I know the math; I admit I was just lazy about it.

What did you think of of the second format vs. the first ones I did? I like the newer format better (bokemono and cormoran giant) and feel like it will look better in the book. I will convert all of them over and use the second format for the new beasties going forward.

Thanks for the input

Oh wow, I hadn't gotten that far. That's even better. Great job.

So I have changed (and am changing) some of he categories of how beasts will be organized. Primarily right now are the Rakshasa and other demons, who will not be listed as Type I or II, but by their "Order". For example, Rakshasa are of the Order of the Red Haze.  These are weak immortal beings, the lowest order of demon. Weak in immortal terms of course, but compared to a frail mortal, still very powerful.
