Prax and the thousand questions about the place.

Having looked at what blowpipes are made of and their use. I'd suggest that Praxian blowpipes are made of a cane similar to River Cane found in the USA. It likely occurs in the Zola Fel valley around the bogs and certainly in a few oases. I don't think it's as widespread as its Earthly counterpart. It's likely more popular as a foodstuff and craft material. The ostrich clan likely have a large stand of this - a canebreak in their ancestral grazing, but unlikely on the scale found in America.

As for use - hunting birds, small critters and spirits. Looks like clay pellets (clay from the Zola Fel) are aimed at the creature's eyes! Darts can also be made. I'm not sure the Praxians use poison darts, however if they do there's likely some kind of fermented lizard ichor that does the trick. The likely candidate for poisonous lizard ichor is something resembling a beaded lizard. All of this is likely Foundchild and Waha hunter's stuff, not mainstream nomad.

I think the poison dart is a needful thing.  My Glorantha has it!!!  :D

And to be honest, for "fermented lizard ichor" I'm probably just gonna still the little frilled dino from the original Jurassic Park movie -- just for the Geek Factor!

That little guy spit a paralytic so he could eat you alive.  It didn't have any anasthetic qualities to it.  From the book.

Works for me.  Gloranthan enough!

Paralytic is in many ways even better... Peaceful Cut, coup de grace, or capture.  Or just drag them alive across the plains to Condor Crags & re-dose them there...

Ex and Sog's Ruins have gazetteer entries in the Guide, as does Feroda. Extra text for Ex is that Ex exists in the Spirit World as well. Extra text for Sog's Ruins is that the dock exists in the Spirit World as well. Feroda is also mentioned in the Wastelands section covering the Jrusteli invasion.

Feroda has a 25 page adventure in Pavis GtA, complete with second age map! This of course riffs off the original Temple at Feroda adventure reprinted in MD's Pavis and the Big Rubble from the original Big Rubble.

Does anyone know anything much about Ex?

You'll need to consult the Ex Files in the Knowledge Temple in Nochet.

See MOB's Getting of Wisdom scenario: http://www.rpgreview.net/mob/thegettingofwisdom.htm#10. Retrieving the Ex Files ;)

[Note: it really doesn't add anything about Ex, but a good reference in-game.]

Grandmother Spider. So she's actually an important spirit, a helper of Waha with her web gathering up all those spirits in the Darkness.

So are her holy days attended by many? Is she worshipped only by those in the darkness spirit society or do all the clan give thanks?

What's gorilla city?

A city mentioned in the AH Elder Races Book.  p121 has the scenario outline of a family group of Baboons leaving their homeland (ie outside the Wastelands) to investigate the rumour that the legendary Gorilla City has returned to life in a nearby region.  They hope to become the Alpha Baboon Clan as a result.

Thanks for the reference Peter. Having read it read it, it doesn't look like it could be Ex. As you mention, it does say outside the Wastes. The Guides reference to Ex is left minimal as its a place for GMs to decide what's there. The only other thing we know about Ex is that Waha khans go there to find spirits of Law (HeroQuest Glorantha p171).

There's a bit of a spider mix up going on here. Grandmother of Spiders refers to the "protectress" of a tribe of giant spiders that came from Dagori Inkarth in the Great Darkness, fought (and ate) chaos and helped people survive. She's got a place in the Shadow People society (darkness). She's an unnamed counter in the original Nomad Gods.

The other is She Who Ties (Waha's aunt/grandmother maybe Arachne Solara), who gathered up Waha's net (she's the closing bead) and pulled the Wastes back together.

Quote

(Fate) Place of Nets

One of Waha’s first encounters after his birth was here. She Who Ties taught him the secret of how to knot the Wastelands back together. This Spirit Place was lost after Time began, and many believe it to be outside of the World close to Earthmaker’s home. A few great Khans and Shaman claimed to have been here, all were changed by this experience.

This was a rune spell that initiates could get in Cults of Prax yes? I like the idea you must go to Ex to gain it.

Yes - Cults of Prax p26. It was a one point cult rune spell, Summon Spirit of Law. By RQ3 it had become command Spirit of Law.

So with the forcing of the Bison tribe and the Impala nation out of Prax into the Wastes after Moonbroth this means that it becomes harder for them to gain certain magics? Travelling to Ex would be difficult for example.

Maybe. If you are intent on being Waha a little matter of being outlawed by foreigners isn't going to stop you getting to your holy places. The Lunars do patrol, but their main concentration is to the north of the Paps and the Zola Fel valley. The major players in this are of course the two pro-lunar phratries (Ma-Laritha & Ma-Voritha). Safe in their ancestral grazing of the Good Place, they would have little need to move. Raiding other tribes is still important for food and the obvious targets are the Bison and Impalas. It's going to be the young bucks who are sent out to do this. They are going to have a duel role of policing Prax and raiding across the river. There aren't that many of them... 75k Sables minus half children, 2/5s of that is 15k adults. Half of those are women so 7.5k men. of those 30% are Yelmalions and 60% are Waha. All the Yelmalions are warriors and probably 10% of the Waha initiates (the rest are herders). So 40% of 7.5k is 3k warriors. Half of those are likely the ones that get to go and raid and fight. That's still a lot of warriors, 1500 split into bands is roughly a 100 spread out over the Wastes and Prax. Single Khans will just sneak past them.

So ambushing these Sable policing war bands would be a fun pastime for all and sundry!

Is that 15 bands of 100 braves or 100 bands of 15?

My pcs recently wiped out one that was patrolling the Zola Fel. So either 14 or 99 to go.

What does the Ma prefix mean? Ma-Laritha & Ma-Voritha.These are Sable clans yes?

100 bands of 15 - sizes will of course vary.

Ma means Children of - Children of Laritha & Children of Voritha.

No

They are phratries. This layer of organisation doesn't exist in the other tribes. There are 5 sable phatries that make up the tribe, historically there were more (maybe). The Hungry Plateau Sables are effectively another. Each was founded by one of the Sable Daughters, whose parents were the Sable Protectress and the Twin Founders. The Twin Founders are the children of the Twinstars and Eirtha. Each phratry has about  30 clans (varies). For reference -

Bison Tribe (clans per tribe 160) -> clans (septs per clan 3) -> septs (9 families)-> family.

Sable Tribe (phratries per tribe 5) -> phratries (clans per phratry 30) -> clans (septs per clan 5) -> septs (4 families) -> family.

Please be aware that there's variance in these numbers. These are just averages.

Phratry is an awful word - but i've yet to find a better one that means the same.
