  2. It's not a matter of what your Trollkin Eurmali eats, obviously, but how BIG the item is that they eat! "I bet you can't swallow that rubble runner whole!"
  3. Yep, all that works very well. Yes, I think the mysteries and occult angles all work very well. I can picture odd cults focused not only on Arkat, but also Alakoring, maybe Talor the Laughing Warrior, ... Very much so!
  4. I'd say more Hellenic than Sumerian (although the difference might be moot). Lots of mystery cults, occultism and skullduggery - perhaps something akin to how the Greeks (and later Romans) became overly fascinated with Egyptian and Anatolian cults. The city-states feature large differences in governance, and often seek to legitimize *their* form of government based on the fragmentary and lost accounts of the Autarchy. City-leagues joining together to jostle for position. Minor fleet arms race over lake Felster itself. Generally looming fear of Seshnela in the west, if I recall correctly. EDIT: Didn't see Scott-Martin's post. Covers much of the same territory, and gets across the atmosphere really well.
  5. "Extreme religious conservatism" Yeah, about that... *stares at Lightbringer Missionaries, Esrolian Grandmother Earth Revival, Kitori, Empire of Wyrm's Friends' Dragon Cult, Alakoringite Orlanth Rex Cult, Sun Domers, Elmal-Yelmalio Synthesis, and more* That's not too bad a historical dynamism for extreme religious conservatives.
  6. Joerg mentioned this, but I'd just like to add as well: most of the entities in the Gloranthan sky are self-luminous as opposed to RW where they merely are reflective. Therefore they would presumably not "eclipse" the sun in the conventional sense (ie. darken it) even if they passed in front of it.
  7. .... This is a fetish thing now, isn't it?
  8. Perhaps this derives from some pre-Time/pre-Lightbringer Missionary mythology where Humakt swore fealty to Vadrus instead of Orlant. By his association with the Vadrudi gods, Fronelan Humakt gains Vadrudi-aligned abilities. Then, the Lightbringer missionaries comes, mostly convert the remaining Vadrudi to Orlanthism, but for whatever reason, Humakt keeps his Vadrudi-aligned abilities in Fronela and Fronelan-influenced areas. Purely conjecture. I have no idea if this is even possible with how spells and abilities are structure in Glorantha. Just seems mythically and historically possible to me.

  10. You might want to try https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/ they have a nice range of Dark Ages, Viking, Saxons and Normans plus Medieval miniatures from Early to Late periods.
  11. Good point on both accounts. Both on history-as-perceived-by-Gloranthans, and more prosaically, that Beast and Dragon are intertwined (or the former arguably derives from the latter). I agree on the point that the more dynamism we get injected into Kralorela, the better. Also, this does remind of the deeper context of the various Western Hykimi organizations (Brotherhood, etc.). Not only were they focal points for Beast Totem groups, and arguably communing with the primal Earth powers (Snake-As-Earth-Guardian is a common theme in the West, after all), but they were accessing or approaching draconic unity between Beast Totems as well. In a way, I think of it as a kind of ritual Reverse-Tower of Babel situation. Makes me wonder whether the Snake Dancers/Serpent Brotherhood weren't simply shamanic in their approach, but possibly mystic as well... and part of me wants to consider how their philosophy compares to those of Kralorelan Dragon Worship and the EWF, respectively. I don't assume they're overly similar, but whatever similarities and contrasts exist are sure to be fascinating.
  12. Hope you keep us posted. To mostly back up the serene Jajagappa the strongest vibe I get off them these days is Ancient Near East and more specifically and ironically the "city of Tyre during the time of the Seleucid dynasty" where the early Fafhrd and Grey Mouser stories happen. For me that's a call back to Mormon devotional art and also Herodotus . . . perfumed cities of brick, gardens and inland seas, parable-spouting visionaries, hedonistic despots, a mosaic of heterodoxies lit up in a vast frontier that supports more spirits than people. Those tile colours are AMAZING. Arkat the Red, Arkat the Yellow, Arkat the Black in his Palace, Arkat the White dreaded and seldom seen.
  13. Thanks for that. I will use Mycenaean Greek titles, like Wanax and Wanakt for officials and maybe the Sumerian Lugal. Perhaps use the glazed tiles of Ishtar gate as model for the city walls. A different tile colour could represent the local version of Arkats.
  14. Camouflaging oneself with foliage, mud. etc. to gain a bonus to Stealth rolls in the wilderness. Think Arnie in Predator. or any number of military movies or real-life events.
  15. I just watched a few of them through and the ones on about how to make your games scary contain good advice for any GM regardless of what rules you are playing.
  16. Small city-states. Perhaps some blend of ancient Mesopotamian (Ur/Gilgamesh etc), with ancient Greek (flavored by weird cults crossing Orlanthi and Seshnegi and Malkionism - sort of Hellenistic?), and then with a heavy dose of the multitude of Arkats.
  17. GAH! 😉 I missed this discussion! I like the concept, but half seems a bit high. Off the top, /4 or /3 sounds like it would fit better (or perhaps /6 to /4 on top of base). SDLeary
  18. I know that most of the RQ3 era Safelster is now gone. Personally I never felt that comfortable with the pseudo medieval version so I don't mind that it has gone. However, I am trying to rework some old RQ3 material for RQG. I just need to get a flavor of Safelster's current culture for one section. So what direction should I be looking in.
  19. I just started to dive into Call of Cthulhu 7e and I really like, what I see now. Combat and skill rolls are easy and intuitive. Still I would like to ask for clarifications on the two following topics: Diving for cover, when shot at with a firearm: - Is the dodge roll made before the attack with the firearm? Or is the penalty die applied after a potential hit by the attacker? - Does the dive for cover count for every attacker with a firearm in the round? And if not can the defender dive for cover more than once per round, because every dive for cover is technically a dodge skill roll? Or does the target just count as being partially covered for further attacks after one successful dive for cover? Thanks in advance.
  20. If I may paste two paragraphs from a sidebar on p. 105 of the HeroQuest 1 book:
  21. Not taking sides on this but my dumbest comment for the week is to wonder if the north-south axis flips when you enter or leave the hell perspective. In this view, dead "southpath" entities limp mutilated and sad across what to us would be local north of the dead sun path, then their orientation reverses when they clear the Dawn Gate. As a native hell god erupting outside the Gates, Shargash could have experienced that reversal in an abnormal way, showing up in celestial north (still hell south) and then only grudgingly converging with the celestial south path as life in the sky tames his original barbarisms. For it is written: them what's above / is backward below.
  22. It suddenly occurred to me to wonder how the VERY "omni" version of Trollish omnivory would interplay with Eurmal's "Swallow" spell. Trying to just... fit them together? with minimal fuss&bother? and downplay the interactions? That seems not very Gloranthan... not very MGF... oh yeah, and VERY NOT Eurmalian! I think Eurmal would make sure there was an extra helping of OMGWTFOHSHIT! Ideas... ?

    Yelm Eclipsed

I don't think so. Mythically/cosmically it makes more sense/fun to have him rise north of the Gates of Dusk and then cross both the Sun Path and Orlanth's Ring at various points.
  24. Ah, that's because I remembered the wrong source. Redaylde is described as red-haired in Sartar: Kingdom of Heroes.
  25. I'm not a newbie to Glorantha having started playing RQ in the early 80s, but I most definitely am a noob on these boards, and I'm still grappling with half-remembered rules from RQ2 and how they interact with RQG, so everything here is of intense interest to me. From my perspective, I've found your input to always be most helpful, and I would echo others in saying don't let a couple of emojis put you off.
