  2. Some of you on here probably know I enjoy some of the parallels I make with Armenian culture and Glorantha. I think of them as happy accidents. TIL there is a Castle Blue in Armenian pre-Christian Mythology. The oldest version of her story is in the Sasna Cṙer or "Troublemakers of Sasun" (yes, like Vidal Sassoun"), but the story dates back to Hittite times 2500 years before. Berd Kapotin, or Castle Blue, was the sacred home of the goddess Covinar (Tsaw-vih-NUHR - that's c is how Armenianists romanise ts, and the accent is always on the last syllable in Armenian), whose name is roughl

  4. @Jeff went back to the original sources. The original rune colours come the Dragon Pass board game. The Sartarites were always orange. Greg colour coded the pieces, it's also where we get the rune associations of the praxian tribes - Nomad Gods. As you're likely aware, RQG's root are RQ2 not RQ3. So stepping back to RQ2 and Appendix D. Rune Identities, You'll see that the lunar metal is Silver and the whole row for Air is missing! The missing metal is also Bronze. GoG was an error.   5. Which perhaps makes sense then. If they did the First Voyage and thought that it was the "this is not a ship" trick that got them through, then used the "let my 'not ships' through again" on the Second Voyage, then they may have concluded that that was the correct approach. But it wasn't, so the Third Voyage failed and they had to rethink what it was that actually allowed them to pass the first time. Once they figured that out, they were better prepared and succeeded with the Fourth Voyage.

  6. You have to wonder what made it "Not a ship" though. I did pick up hints that whatever they did was a bit like a wyter ritual, but that is hardly a sorcery answer. I suppose half of what we need to ask here is "given that Zzabur is the greatest sorcerer ever, and his spell is in effect centuries after casting so he must have an immense INT to pull off a spell of that magnitude, so what sort of loophole would he miss?".   7. Page 215. Heavy Scale Cuirass, for chest only, weighs 3 ENC Heavy Scale Skirts, for abdomen only, weighs 3 ENC Heavy scale Hauberk, that covers both, weighs ... 3 ENC! I could see the hauberk being less than 6 because it is more "efficient" somehow, but 3 seems wrong. Maybe I have an out of date version of the rules, or this is covered in the errata??? My search on "heavy scale" didn't pick up anything.

  9. I think it would be a good idea to know which region you are planning to play in. Most of what is now Holland (the province) and Zeeland were not that heavily populated, and there were few, if any, nobles/knights there. Part of why the power of nobles in those provinces was never very great, and West-Friesland was not even subjugated by the Counts of Holland until 1300, although that could make it an exelent frontier setting. Flanders and Gelderland had more nobles, and Brabant in particular. Friesland did only reluctantly acknowledge the Holy Roman Emperor (titular ruler of Friesland\Frisia)

  14. This is a tough subject and though it should be old and familiar, it is not. We are all finding our way forward (yes one can say “all”? Optimistic, yes but I like it that way) and with luck we are also holding out a helping had to bring those of us who are having trouble navigating it along with us. Without redmoongoddess Ian and myself taking a position and Crel and others taking another this might not have come to the good (better?) point . Without Exubae admitting a problem we would not have this learning experience moving in a good direction Baby steps, folk!

Ugh, it uses that stupid "vaguely chinese" font on the cover, IMHO that font is too tied to a history of people using it in relation to orientalist views of chinese people (or asian people in general) to be used on the closest thing to China in Glorantha without coming off as being unintentionally racist. Hopefully the actual content of the book avoids the same mistake, but I can't say without reading it, and frankly I sorta don't wanna with that font choice. Sorry, but it's how i feel.

  17. I am not going to do that. Art is well advanced and as far as I am concerned that is a key part of the book. We've moved past the point I am interested in circulating the manuscript outside of a core circle (plus those who bought previous manuscripts at GenCon).   19. There is a restriction on PMs for 5 new conversations per dag and max. 5 recipients per conversation, for "Regulars". For "Members", the number is 1 and 1. This to prevent the horrid PM spam we were plagued with for some time. If it provides to much of a limitation, I'll up the limit.

  20. As I said, he didn't much care for them. In my opinion, he built traps into the Closing for them, so that when they said "Oh, we know how to deal with this", they encountered something that trashed them. It could be that Dormal found out what Zzabur called a Ship and cicumvented it, or that Zzabur built a time limit into the Closing.

All true - but this thread is in the Magic World forum, and started from observations about the Magic World rule for creatures without CON and poisons, so Glorantha's not hugely relevant here... 😉 I quite like the idea of "blessed" / "holy" water as poisons / venoms against undead (or Otherworld) creatures... But my main point is that in a broad, non-setting specific game like Magic World I do NOT think this is a mistake - one may prefer in ones OWN setting to define a rule that what ones rules recognise and model as Poison can only affect creatures with a CON score, and that no creature

  24. Not the premise of what? CoC? or Nephilim? IMO it is kinda the premise of CoC... human perspective/awareness coming up as narrow and irrelevant to a larger, expansive one. I never interpreted Nephilim as 'body rape'. Though the show I just got done watching, the old BBC show 'Intruders', is. It's pretty much the sort of thing old Mythos sorcerers get up to, and the nutty cult in Get Out... forcing their way into other people's minds/bodies.

  26. Mythras has a skill for this, Perseverance. It's the one that replaces POW when resisting mind-affecting magic, for instance. However, using a skill to model morale is not necessarily a good thing. Sure, experience will learn you how to keep calm in dangerous situations, but it's not all that matters when speaking of morale. Motivation is key. A young and inexperienced soldier who thinks he's good because he has excellent gear, or a fanatic, won't flee because one of their comrades has fallen. I think the "clues" in a "prophetic" dream aren't to the solution of the whole mystery; they direct the players to the real clues, they cut through the clutter of red herrings or misapprehended clues to highlight what (or who!) matters, etc. They can be symbolic, not literal. A dream about meat gone bad & poisoning the town might be about some corruption among the ranch-hands outside of town, or it might be about some "staple" source of strength for the town, that is actually corrupt & undermining them.   29. Adding to what Jeff said, while I find some of Storm Tribe interesting, it did come out in 2001. Using Babester Gor as an example cult, it was updated for the Sartar companion in 2010, then RQ Glorantha in 2018. Even by 2009 the cults had returned to their pre-HW forms, loosing their complex structure and moved back to simpler forms. Glorantha keeps moving on and is updated to reflect this. While the mythology in the HW era books is great, its cult complexity isn't at all helpful to newcomers to Glorantha. The Sartar Companion writeup is much better, and will be completely superseded by the up

  30. Although I am sure everyone knows this, Storm Tribe is not particularly canonical or even influential on the RuneQuest line. It was not a source for the Cults Book (in fact, I deliberately did not even look at it, preferring to rely directly on Greg's notes and our discussions), and I do not encourage it as a reference for those writing for us. You can do with it as you want, but I want to be clear that it is not a foundation for any new published material going forward.

  31. My take is that Vinga is seeking personal vengance, Babeester Gor is seeking vengance for the Earth. The impersonal nature of their unleashing a horrific berserker rage is part of what makes them so terrifying. The Vingan sees her target as a person to be slain. The Gori sees them as a blot to be cleansed. Hence Vigan revenge is "honorable battle" while Gorite vengance is a very messy cleaning chore. Something that just has to be done, making the target's honour irrelevant.

  35. I´m a big fan of both Call of Cthulhu rpg and Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) Cthulhu-themed boardgames such as Arkham horror, Eldritch horror, Mansions of Madness. In all FFGs Cthulhu-themed games, the same protagonists reappear, and thus I´ve become curious about if there´s been an attempt to convert those FFG characters into CoC investigators or NPCs?

  40. LATEST NEWS: We are very close to having a Print on Demand (POD) version of Horror on the Orient Express ready. By "very close" I mean in a month or so. It's not going to be a big box full of 6 books and bling. We have redone the interior layout of the FIVE original main books and combined their contents, without cutting anything, into two books. Each of those books is about 360 pages. The first volume is a combination of Book I (Campaign Overview), Book II (Throughs the Alps), and Book V (Strangers on the Train).   42. Not in the Third Age. Orlanth is one of Ernalda's husbands, and the most widely worshiped. However, their son Barntar is more popular among the Esrolian farmers than Orlanth (who is more popular among herders and is a war god). But the cult is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, likely because of a combination of the large numbers of Sartarite and Heartlander refugees in Nochet, and because the Queen of Esrolia strongly favors it.

  46. Speaking really only for myself, yes -- I think it is. I mostly use the pdfs for GM prep and I use them from my Surface Pro for gaming. But, the quality of the books is outstanding. I got the slipcase on sale while I was at GenCon last year. Not only are the books great, but I also liked getting the GM Screen and the handouts.

I'd like to think that I'm relatively well-versed in Glorantha, but compared to some of the veterans around here my knowledge is only very newly gained and it's trying to wrap my head around things like this when it shows.
