  1. Yes the art is important, as are the props. But unfortunately both are expensive. I guess the ideal introductory rolegame should have: nice painted miniatures, nice full colour character sheets, full colour gaming tiles, and possibly a set of (again) full colour cards for spells, weapons, creatures, etc. The players should be able to play by having a look at their character sheet and their cards only -- no boring manual. Only the GM should need a manual, which should be as short as possible (like the original 1981 BRPS booklet). All IMHO.
  2. I have played both Dungeons & Dragons Board Game | BoardGameGeek and HeroScape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie | BoardGameGeek with my children (ages 10 and 9). The former is particularly close to real [hack 'n slay] rolegames. Despite its name it's also actually closer to BRP than to D&D (characters use Magic Points to fuel their spells, and nothing prevents the Magic-User from using a 2H sword). However, I haven't tried a real rolegame with them yet. I believe their attention span is still too short. I was 14 myself when I started playing D&D.
  3. ..you're watching 'Willow' with the kids and when the troll shows up you tell your kids "Nah, that's not a troll"
  4. Some rules for vehicles by a friend of mine: Engins (if you'll pardon the French )
  5. It does, indeed... Do you run any pbem games by chance? Or live games? (I see you're based in Normandy)
  6. Actually my problem has been classes! My BRPS PCs resist pigeonholing.
  7. Pretty blunt... but it does go to the heart of the question. What is the main theme driving the setting?
  8. Thank you, thank you... I am pretty satisfied with my Imperial Chinese setting -- except for Combat. I am looking forward the new BRP book to try and improve that section!
  9. It used to be BaSIC (French version of the original BRP booklet, with lots of additions) when I was GM'ing my Atrilian campaign (Atrilia - le jeu de rôle) -- my, that was ages ago! Now it's RQ2, but as a player, not a GM. PS-- thanks for all your comments, they were really heartening. When I started my BRP site I felt like a lonely voice in the desert (it was at the time of the d20 craze).
  10. It's like film reviews. Of course everybody goes to the movies, but not everybody is able to write incisive and funny film reviews. Well, I certainly cannot write incisive and funny rolegames reviews :ohwell:
  11. The flat chance. How else do you explain the blind archers or swordsmen so popular in Japanese popular culture?
  12. Planescape. Loved the setting but obviously not the rules.
  13. I may add a fanzine I edited back in 2001: BaZAR
  14. Well... It may depend on the setting, though. In the Water Margin novel, you have very badass adventurers who completely lose their courage as soon as they see a frail old Taoist chanting mysterious words, or whenever they feel a whiff of cold air (which is associated with a ghostly presence in Chinese folk mythology).
  15. Ricard Ibañez is the person who translated RQIII to Spanish, so no wonder that Aquelarre's rules look a lot like the Basic Role-Playing System! (BTW I love Aquelarre and I highly recommend it for any Fantasy Europe BRPS game)
  16. Actually BaSIC had way more stuff in it than the original BRPS booklet. It was closer to WoW than to the BRPS booklet.
  17. Well, I am the GM and I post a new post on my blog for every new scene, then the players post their reactions as comments to my post. It's much better than a pbem because you have all the history of the posts at any given time. Also players tend to be more literary. You may have a look, it's here.
  18. I'm Gianni from Paris. I am an avid player of RQ2 (have been playing in a great Praxian campaign for years, yet my character is still at lay member level ). I am running a 'blog' MRQ campaign, and I have been working for -- oh about 10 years -- on a Chinese BRP based rolegame. And I'm Italian, not French
