  1. I am not an expert with a bow, but I grew up with and around a lot of bow hunters. I believe my brother is the reincarnation of Robin Hood. We had both compound bows and recurve bows around the house. I would say that compound bows are much, much better. The arrows flew with much more strength and authority. The big advantage is that at a point the pulleys flip out on compound bows; the draw "relaxes" and you can hold the arrow steady. One time I went to a bowyers shop and fired his longbow. He said that it was as powerful as the typical compound bow. The Longbow was much harder to fire because the bow never relaxed and you had to fire the arrow pretty quick or your arm strength would wear out. After a couple of shots my arms wore out and I couldn't pull it back anymore at all. The guy who owned it even said that he could not fire it very long before it wore him out. I certainly would not want to get hit by either of them in any armor though. Once while playing in the backyard, I shot at a steal bucket without thinking and the arrow went clean through it like it was butter. As I recall, that was with the recurve and not the compound. My parents were not too happy about that one.
  2. I am a bit hazy on licensing as well. I also do not know much about self-publishing.
  3. Thank you very much. It always fires me up to work on the setting more when I hear stuff like this. I would love to see that happen too but, unfortunately, I doubt that it will happen . I would be happy just to see the Drums Along the Frogtoe Supplement be released. I submitted last winter and have been biting by nails in anticipation ever since. I am now trying to write a bunch of stuff based on the Sable River, but it is quit long and may be a while before I can get it finished. I think I will, even if it takes more space and time. I personally love supplements that include detailed characters with hit location that can be used and re-used. Even if I did not run whole campaigns I often would borrow and re-use pre-made characters from various other sources. You know, I have thought about experimenting with something like this for home games, but I do not know if I ever discussed it. I think it went something like 1. Using normal hit points 2. Locations for armor purposes, 3.All locations have 1/2 hit points used with major wound consequences. I guess it would resemble Warhammer a little.
  4. Well, I have always used hit locations myself, but it seemed like a lot of people prefer Major Wounds. Both have their charms. Although I usually focus on hit locations in the Green, I have always included a line for major wounds for people who use that option. I think I did this in Drums Along the Frogtoe as well, where there are a lot of statistics. I do wonder about these options a lot: Simply going with Major Wounds would save a lot of time and space in supplements. I have no experience using this in actual play though. on the other hand... There is something really nice about detailed hit locations, especially when varying armor types are worn on different locations. It seems to add a little extra character. Hit Locations was a thing I always really liked about Runequest when I first started playing it.
  5. I just added a Green specific Character sheet to the downloads section. Character Sheet (The GREEN) - Downloads - Basic Roleplaying Central This was something I always wanted to do, but always became frustrated with the programs I was trying to use. It is a very busy and chaotic sheet as each heading is different looking, but I find it is easier to find what you are looking for that way. Most of the necessary stuff is on the front page. I just put the back page together to make it seem more complete.
  6. At the risk of being self-promoting; the Green has a slightly different take on magic while using the basic idea of the BGB. You can get the just of it in the Adventurers Guide for free here: Venturers Guide (The Green) - Downloads - Basic Roleplaying Central The basic take on magic is at the end of the supplement. The Green Monograph has a number of similar traditions in it as well .
  7. I have no idea about the print copies, but the pdf version can be tracked here: Chaosium Inc. I believe it will go up a good deal during the first sale as many people wait to buy things until then.
  8. Thanks for posting this and the book list. I have not bought Swords of Cydoria yet, but it is certainly on my list. I am looking forward to reading it.
  9. As much as I have tried, I do not tend to read things I buy in PDF form. When I read PDF's of good things I always wish I had bought the dead-tree version. Reading from a computer is just a pain. If I read it on the kindle, it is either too small to read or I get a little column of stuff and I have to flip back and forth and cannot see a whole map or picture. The only success I have had is copying the text and then simply reading the text on the kindle, but still no maps. Looking stuff up at game time is a huge pain when you cannot flip through the book to find what you are looking for. On the other hand I love the ability to copy and past stat blocks and then print them off and have all the stats ready on a sheet of paper or two at game time. This keeps me from flipping through the book for different monsters and NPC's, and writing all over the book when they take wounds. I learned to do this with the free MRQ monster book. I could easily copy and past 10 monsters, change the couple of stats needed to make them unique, add cool notes, print them and wallah...ready to go. Before this I used to use the Monster Coliseum and encounters book from Borderlands an awful lot.
  10. Welbolng (The Green) - Downloads - Basic Roleplaying Central Well, here is a quick writeup of the Welbolng turtles. Large creatures are kind of hard for me and a couple of times I have been way off the mark with the siz stat. Many times I feel like there should be different sizes of creatures. I put in two set of stats for this one, one for smaller turtles and one for the real giants. I kept pretty close to brontosaur stats with the big ones as I figured would be roughly that size...not as long or tall but much thicker with the shell.
  11. Thank you. It means a lot to me that people enjoy it and drives me to keep trying to write stuff. Yep, as a matter of fact I thought about putting the stats for the Giant Turtles in an appendix at the end. Then I forgot about it. I will get to work on the turtles as soon as I have a little time. I have tried to make their lower faces (nose, mouth and jaw) pushed out- similar to a chimp or planet of the apes prothsetic. They generally have nostrels or nose slits. One of the best examples of how they should look is on p.51 of The Green. Depending on the positioning of the face and the way I scupt the picture they sometimes look different. I see that the in the picture of the trogod on page 25 of the Venturer's Guide the nose slits have vanished. They were there originally, but the contrast was not enough, and the final picture did not read the difference in color . That being said, I believe the Togod should have a wide variation in the way they look depending upon their racial type and totem.
  12. I just added the VENTURERS GUIDE to the download section Venturers Guide (The Green) - Downloads - Basic Roleplaying Central This introduces a number of new traditions that can be used with the Green. These may be of interest to anyone running a fantasy campaign. Many of the traditions can work well in any type of fantasy world and should be able to be ported over pretty easily. Hopefully, the Green should have a large adventure/campaign out in monograph form soon as well.
  13. I love these threads. I always seem to pick up one or two ideas every time. I use a lot of soundtracks in the background during games. I love the Morricone stuff. Another great soundtrack is Once Upon a Time in the West- The harmonica bit is great. The theme to Magnificent Seven is good. The soundtrack to Dances With Wolves is good too. For fantasy, two of my favorite are the Soundtrack to the HBO Rome miniseries and The soundtrack to the new Battlestar Galactica (particularly seasons 2 and 3). During any sort of melee we tend to play the original Star Trek arena fight music. It is great and just adds to the proper mood. Now it is kind of an ongoing joke, but combat doesn't feel the same without it pounding away in the background.
  14. Yep! This sounds like a "must buy". I may have to wait for a little while so I can make a big order all at once though.
  15. It is just a small suppliment.. probably too small for a monograph. I am not sure that there would be a lot of demand for such a thing. What happened is that after I finished Drums I started writing notes for a series of adventures. I needed more Traditions to add the breadth of characters I wanted. I had a some traditions that I cut from the Green to make a lower page count. I also kept finding that there were not enough options for the Outworld factions. Most ideas I had for adventures always centered on the Outworlders, so I thought I would add details and traditions to round them out a bit. Originally I thought I would put all this together with a new adventure monograph. It grew to the point were it could kind of be a little release of its own. It would be nice to see both Drums and the Venturer's Companion come out about the same time so lots of new stuff will be available for the Green at once. I will try and write a little more about it in another thread.
  16. I submitted an adventure for The Green called Drums Along the Frogtoe in April. I have not heard any news since then. I tried to get in touch with Chaosium during the summer, but I never seemed to get though. I have a second addition to the Green about finished. I am not sure what I will call it though.... Maybe the "Green Companion" or "the Venturers Guide'. I believe I will probably just make it available for download and forget trying to go through the Monograph thing.
  17. I have sent several e-mails to Dustin and cannot seem to get through to him. I was wondering if anyone here has any insight into what is going on.
  18. I just did the picture this Morning when I saw your post. I will send it along. Unfortunately it is wide rather than tall. I had the same problem myself with the Green. Tall pics fit much better into the text, but most of the best pictures were wide.
  19. Tried to get a picture in here, but I could not seem to get it to work.
  20. Shoot, I missed it twice then. I tend to make bulk orders to get free shipping. I will be sure to get it next time. I must have always looked for it under BRP.
  21. Was Operation Ulysses ever offered in print form? I always planned on buying this, but although it is available in PDF, I can't recall ever seeing it offered in print.
  22. Very cool stuff. I had something like it in the Green based on Luck and Fortune, but it was not near as cool as what you have here. Glad to see you posted it again. I am certainly going to add this to my optional house rules. You may want to put this in the download section so it doesn't get lost.
  23. Rats! It is a little to late to change it now. Oh well.
  24. I am begining to wonder about my choice for the name for this thing. It began as I was trying to think up a name for a river system that split into all sorts of different tributaries and swamps as it neared its source. One of the tribes that live along its banks are the Frog Eaters so I just began calling it the Frogtoe. There is an old book and classic movie about the settlers along the Mohawk River called 'Drums along the Mohawk'. I began calling the file where I stored the writing "Drums Along the Frogtoe" and the name just stuck. Since then I have heard a number of jokes, and had to field questions on the name.
