  1. These are great, thank you for the resources! I'll have to bookmark these for when things get underway. Oh, I'm very interested in the sound of that. If there really is going to be a companion, what can you tell us about it?
  2. So I'm thinking its best used as a sort of template if there's something in there I really want to use. I suppose it'll depend on just what sort of game I want to run, but they may need to be tinkered with a little just to make sure things don't get too out of hand. Thank you for the insight!
  3. Well, I was hoping I could save a bit of money, but it sounds like I'm eventually gonna want to get the whole book anyway. May as well go for broke and just get it out of the way then Thank you all for the quick replies on the matter, I really appreciate it! I have one more question that I just thought up. I know Mythras and BRP are technically different systems - but I also know the core mechanics are fairly similar. At least that's what I've come to understand. So my question is how compatible would Mythras, and by extension Classic Fantasy, be with Call of Cthulhu's Malleus Monstrorum? I only ask because there's a lot of potentially fun creatures in there that might add some good flavor to a traditional fantasy setting.
  4. Hello all! I was hoping someone might help me with some questions I had regarding Mythras. First, I know that Mythras Imperative is a slightly abridged version of the rule book - but what exactly is missing? Like, what sorts of things am I missing out on by using Inperative rather than the primary rule book? And regarding Classic Fantasy. I know the book requires Mythras - but how compatible is it with Mythras Imperative? Is there anything missing that would severely detract from a Classic Fantasy game?
  5. So, uh, anyone know about how long the layout bit usually takes? I've recently gotten into D&D5e, but I've been following Classic Fantasy since it's days a BRP Monograph - so I'm still pretty excited for this one.
  6. Aha! Thank you - this gives me something concrete to go on. If I reverse the hit location formula from the big gold book, will that be good for determining the hit point total? And I'm not sure the difference between dex ranks and strike ranks, but I'm sure I can figure it out. Haha, I'm gonna have to raid the download section. Sounds like there's a lot of good stuff there that I'm missing out on. That's what I love to hear. It sounds like it's gonna be a great addition - I'll be snagging it as soon as humanly possible. And the fact that it has some old reprinted content is actually really cool. Even if I wasn't able to enjoy these things at their prime, I still get to have some kind of connection to the past.
  7. Excellentttt. I'm sitting on pins and needles here - any new magic concepts are thrilling.
  8. Has there by chance been any news on the release? Three weeks ago it was going to press, but not being publication savy I'm not sure what kinda time frame that entails. So do we know when this'll be dropping? I'm ever so excited!
  9. That's excellent - thank you so much for the breakdown. With so many different versions of things out there, it gets a little convoluted to an outsider like myself. Sounds like the Legend books and Monster Island are a must. I really appreciate all the assistance. I always hear that Runequest is more or less compatible with a few adjustments - what kind of adjustments are there to make? Is it as simple as ignoring rules that you're not using, or are there some stat discrepancies?
  10. Oh, a Magic World Bestiary sounds interesting - I'll have to keep an eye out for that. Thank you for the suggestions, I'll have to take a look around and see what I can find. Oh wow. Haha, I feel silly for not checking for something like this. This is a pretty darn good resource - especially for nothing. Thank you for pointing this out to me!
  11. So I've always had a love for Bestiaries, even before getting into RPGs. Now that I've pretty much settled on BRP as my choices system, I wonder if ya'll could point me toward some compatible monster books? Take nothing for granted - I'm very uncultured on these matters. I own the Big Gold Book, Magic World, and the Malleus Monstrorum among some CoC books. The Malleus is an amazing book and I wouldn't trade it for anything - but I'm wondering if maybe there are some monster books with a more fantasy tone? I also have the Basic Creatures book - but that's included in Magic World so it's kinda moot now. Anyhoo! Any help would be appreciated!
  12. Yeah, I made sure to check all of the junk folders too. Guess I just get to be the problem child today.
  13. I did grab a preorder the other day - does that mean the email will come tomorrow, or perhaps just a bit later? I'm sorry for the impatience, I'm just far more excited than I can express.
  14. So, uh... Any word on the PDF version dropping soon? /stupidly hopeful for later tonight.
  15. Wait. Guys, help me out here. I read through your calculation stuff, but I'm not entirely sure I understand the idea of Godzilla hitting 150 on the SIZ stat. The back of the Malleus Monstrorum states that after 330 or such, it becomes 1/10th scale - thus a 80,000 ton Dhole has a SIZ 8000. Why are we ignoring this for Godzilla? He has an established tonnage of 20,000 some, thus SIZ 2000, right? And I know you said that absurd damage bonus was, well, absurd - but that doesn't make sense for him? Or wait. Did I misread it? Are we talking, like, on a sort of different scale? Like a giant monster specific table, so the totals are reduced? I'm just trying to wrap my head around this whole thing.
  16. Hey, I just had a thought. I know it handles transforming mechs like the Veritechs, but is there any reason this wouldn't also be good for a Transformers campaign? Like Autobot and Decepticon kinda Transformers? I mean... They're essentially mechs who don't need pilots on the basic most level. It never occurred to me till now.
  17. Oh wow! I didn't expect such a growth spurt on this topic while I've been gone! A lot of support for Classic Fantasy, which is fitting because it's an amazing book. I checked out Magic World, which is also very good. So I'm thinking that I'd find a great balance with both - especially in Classic Fantasy's spells. Magic World has some good ones, but I was really put off by the lack of traditional projectile spells. Luckily CF had just what I needed in that regard. I'm also really hyped for Classic Fantasy's future second edition. And wow. Thank you for the oldschool BRP/Magic World link - that is ridiculously appealing to me. Not only do I love classically simple rule sets, but that's the first Chimera I've found for BRP. That might just be a perfect tool for easing into the groove with my prospective players.
  18. End of May, you say? I wasn't expecting it so soon! I've been waiting for this beauty ever since it was first announced. To be honest, I was starting to wonder if it would ever happen. I am SO happy that my pessimism was wrong! Just preordered mine - I'm practically shaking with anticipation. I can't wait for the go ahead on the PDF download. It's like an early Christmas.
  19. I was thinking just the same thing. Dagon and his ilk are pretty common sights in most fantasy worlds. Even a Gug, while it may raise some eyebrows, isn't much different on the scale of terror than say an Umber Hulk or something. So I was thinking I would cut out the sanity system for the basic creatures. But as you said, if one of the big guys ever shows their figurative face, it'd probably ruffle some feathers. I always got the impression that some of the Old Ones caused sanity loss for reasons that go beyond physical appearance. Like, humankind lacks the necessary faculties to comprehend the full sight of them, and the brain begins to break down because of it. And Cthulhu has an enormous psychic presence - so he may cause some lesser minded adventurers to lose it because of the mental pressure he exerts, while an accomplished magician or psionic would probably be able to shield themselves from the brunt of it. But this is looking good, I think we've got the ball rolling here now!
  20. Oh, I'm such a dunderhead. I actually own the Classic Fantasy book and I didn't even think to check it out with these recent stirrings. Looking it over again, however, and you blokes might just be right. It sounds a LOT like the AD&D book that I've been reading, what with the classes and races and what have you, so it may just be exactly what I needed. I think I can even work out a simple way to allow basic spell casting even with non-magic-users. But Magic World does intrigue me as well. Especially since it even says on the product page that any character can be a spell-caster. So I may actually pick that up as well and compare them directly. But either way, it sounds like I have a pretty good starting point and a pretty good fallback at this point. Thank you so much for being my much needed voices of reason. I am curious about something else. Being that I was primarily a CoC keeper, I own the Malleus Monstrorum. That is an amazing resource for truly terrible monsters that could really add a dash of horror to classic fantasy. Might you know if the monsters therein would be compatible without much tinkering?
  21. Hello everyone! I come with a conundrum and I don't know where else to turn. A quick background, I've only played a few games of Call of Cthulhu as the GM. But I have lately found myself wanting a good old fashion dungeon crawling sorta game - so I can make strange and terrible dungeons filled with terrible things. I thought it would be fun to get into 1st edition AD&D, so I bought the recent rereleases and have been looking them over. But I've gotten overwhelmed and confused and now I'm wondering if I should seek a more BRP related approach. The rigid alignment system was a turn off, as is the rigid class system - but the rules for randomization of treasure and monsters are very appealing. I was thinking it would be much better for me and my gang if I could employ a more Elder Scrolls style class system. That is, classes are little more than a title and the player is free to choose their own skills. I also like the idea of a non-magic centric character being able to cast some degree of magic - like a fighter throwing a fireball now and again. I know from CoC that you sort of have that kind of open class system, but I never dealt with magic so I don't know how that all works. So now I don't know if I should just play AD&D and remove the alignment and class restrictions, or if I should opt for BRP. But with AD&D, I have lists of default magical items and treasures and whatnot, but I don't know if I have that for BRP so I fear it may take more work. I'm not looking for an existing story - I just need a simple but comprehensive system that I can use to tell my own stories. But I'm not RPG savy so I don't know what to do. I'm sorry for the long winded and perhaps confusing plight, but I ask for any degree of advice. I'm at a loss so any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much just for reading this nonsense!
