  1. Hi all, A couple of questions. One for anyone that has bought the PDF and one for Chaosium... 1. I understand that the sanity mechanics in the new book are different than what is in the Call of Cthulhu book. Can anyone share how the new sanity rules work at a high-level? 2. I understand that the printed Basic Roleplaying Book will be available next year. What type of binding will it use? One of the things I love about the older BGB is it's sewn binding. Thanks!
  2. Thank you, this breakdown was very helpful. I will pick the new "BGB" up!
  3. Subscribed. I have been thinking about running a hard sci-fi game soon and since I love BRP (and also because I’m too lazy to learn Traveller), I had planned to use M-Space or maybe Stars Without Number since my group already knows those rule sets. However as I read well regarded sci-fi scenarios (which are frequently for Traveller), I am more and more tempted to use Traveller. Two reasons, first is that some of the best Traveller scenarios I have read seems to rely on a kind of ship design / ship construction mini-game that I think might be hard to emulate in other systems. M-Space has something like that (it’s super cool) but it’s not sufficiently compatible with Traveller that you could easily reverse engineer and leverage the ships found in many Traveller supplements (feel free to correct me if I have it wrong). Which brings me to to my second reason. There is a gigantic, whopping, absolutely insane amount of material available for Traveller. And I am not just talking about adventures / scenarios but also things like ship designs, settings, fanzines and even forums and blogs with mountains of usable ideas and data. With all these riches I might never need to design a Traveller ship again. Last night I spent 3 hours sorting through more than 130 pages of post from Traveller enthusiasts that were trying to reverse engineer the Traveller ship Annic Nova in order to ascertain its backstory. I haven’t seen any other sci-fi game yet that generates that level of fan commitment, game ideas and hooks that I can leverage. It’s very compelling. Now don’t misunderstand, I love BRP and M-Space, but man, there are definitely a lot of reasons to choose Traveller for hardish sci-fi gaming..
  4. I totally wasn’t expecting anything like this! I wonder to what degree they updated the BGB? This is a must-buy for me!
  5. Man I just need to send you a check! Thanks! Will read it... now...
  6. Hey all. Y’all might want to read JP’s Lollipop, Lollipop. I enjoyed it a lot and can’t wait to run it!
  7. There is this for BRP but I don’t read French so it might not be a match.
  8. For straight gold book BRP there is Operation Ulysses and Outpost 19. If you expand For a little less straight BRP there are scenarios for Cthulhu Rising, M-Space, and at least one for Mythras. I think New Horizon also comes with a scenario.
  9. Hemulaformis you show an amazing combination of system mastery and GM smarts and you haven’t ever been a GM before? Wow I’m impressed. I’m with David, I would apply a 20% penalty to rolls assuming it’s a good sized fire. I would also roll con for smoke inhalation damage.
  10. I look forward to your future posts!
  11. Hey THANKS Stuart, that’s very insightful! I will follow your advice!
  12. Hey, great observations! I will check out the video.
  13. My game will be slightly different but in a similar setting as your game. I’m not sure if the date yet but it will probably be about 300 BCE - right before Alexander. Basically the old Gods of Greece (Apollo, Zeus, Artemis, etc) still exist but are very weak, impotent and dying because Greece no longer worships them with the same sincerity as they did in the old days. However one of the Gods, Artemis, has a few devout believers left and thus still has a little power. She manifest to the player party charging them to do what’s necessary to bring the old gods back to power and glory. This takes the form of numerous adventures (as part of a campaign) to obtain items of power, punish the Greek citizenry that has fallen away from the Gods, glorify the gods, and inspire worship and fear of the gods in the citizenry.
  14. Hey Chris! I don’t comment much but I wanted to tell you I love your stuff and I am taking notes in preparation for my first “Greece” game! Keep up the good work!
  15. Wow - incredible work. This is an insta-buy for me!
  16. I can’t read Italian but i find it amusing that the character sheet looks like a restaurant menu! Have fun!
  17. I don’t have any pre-gen pulp characters in PDF, but if worst came to worst you could generate them on the Dhole’s House…
  18. Hi all, Thanks @g33kfor paging me. I enjoy talking about freeform magic in BRP. But first let me caution this is going to be a shortish post as I’m in Maui on vacation and my wife is going to want to do the late night swim in a little while. So maybe a few observations: 1 - I’m not an Ars Magica player but I get the feeing that sladethesniper would benefit from an Ars-like system, modified to support rituals like described in the Enlightened Magic book. 2 - The homebrew rules located on this site called “The Second Way (TSW)” does much of what your describing but in a slightly different way. In its latest version TSW supports a skill roll to cast a spell, but it’s a general Wizardry skill and not a skill for a type of magic. However TSW leverages nearly the exact same techniques and forms described in Ars (called glyphs and spheres) such a that a wizard can fairly easily cast a spell with the glyphs and spheres they possess but struggle with spells that require glyphs and spheres that they don’t possess. The difficulty in casting spells with unknown glyphs and spheres is driven by two elements. a - the costs in mps for a spell that the caster doesn’t have the prerequisite glyphs and spheres is high and often prohibitively so. It doesn’t matter what the skill roll is if the wizard doesn’t have the juice to power strange spells. b - for the skill roll to succeed (assuming you have the juice) you have to roll the wizardry skill minus the prohibitive cost of doing strange magic (see a above) exactly as Slade described it. The result is much as Slade described it but in TSW the variety in glyphs and spheres replaces the need for multiple specialty skills (like life or time magic). 3 - I think Slades approach is workable but if you don’t use TSW ultimately you are going to have to define in detail the costs of attributes like the number of targets, area of affect, range, mass, damage, etc. If it comes to that you might consider just downloading TSW and using its definitions assuming your okay with definitions that give wizards very high, nearly game breaking power (like I envision Ars offering). 4. Having the GM decide on when a spell seems outlandish or ill thought out seems problematic to me and my group. When my group helped me nail down the rules of TSW (particularly attributes like range, mass, etc) they wanted it all in black in white specifying what could and could not be done. These clear definitions (that didn’t require GM input) made the sessions more fun as the players we’re often forced to get extremely creative on creating spells that did what they want but met all restrictions. Whether you use TSW or not I think clearly defining the “limits” and costs is important. 5. If you allow wizards to tap other characters for their MPs, I recommend as G33 said requiring the donor to make his wizardry roll. And if the donor fumbles BAD things will happen. So sure, the party wizard can tap 200 MPs from 40 wizards but the odds of someone fumbling become more and more likely as donors are increased. 6. And when I say BAD, I mean BAD. Fumbled spell results should range from things that make the wizard hard to play (maybe the wizard permanently takes on the shape of a preying mantis) to things that can compromise the campaign (if a lot of MPs are in play). So instead of taking the shape of a praying mantis the caster rips a hole in space time and now the whole world is getting sucked in. Now they have to fix it… Okay more tomorrow
  19. Thank you! I will order it today! * correction I will order it next week. I just realized we are going on vacation Friday and I don’t want I sitting outside that long.
  20. Hi all, Does Chaosium print its Children of Fear book via Offset Press? If not where is the best place to get the best quality book (Chaosium, DriveThruRPG or maybe Lulu?)? Any help is appreciated! Ronnie
