  6. Inversion

From the Dark Ages to the Modern Day, here's an amazingly diverse array of new releases on the Miskatonic Repository, Chaosium's platform for independent Call of Cthulhu creators at DriveThruRPG. If you're a Call of Cthulhu fan, we encourage you to take a look - and if you like what you see, please leave a rating or even a review!

Inversion: A Modern Call of Cthulhu Scenario
Alex Guillotte, Bud Baird ($14.95, 213 page PDF and MP3 file)

As a top-tier patron of the popular YouTube channel Debunker Bunker, you have been invited to witness a unique event. The Debunkers have built a machine using plans they discovered on the Dark Web that, according to the attached information, is supposed to open a window to another dimension.

Join your fellow patrons for this history-making event that is sure to be a viral sensation, even if nothing happens! Like the Debunkers say, success is fine, but failing is fun. And this machine is probably going to fail spectacularly!

Besides, it can't really work... can it?

Another modern scenario by the creators of the Miskantonc Repository Platinum best seller Viral.

    The Viscount Who Left Me
    Z.V. Cretney ($5.95, 54 page PDF)

Bath, 1814: The height of the summer social season. The morning after the society wedding of the year the new Viscountess Huntley secretly summons the investigators to her honeymoon suite.

This team of meddlesome bridesmaids are charged with unravelling the mystery of the Viscountess' missing husband without the members of the ton finding out and causing a scandal that could sully many a reputation. Along the way investigators are plunged into a world of curses, folklore and forbidden romance. Will they retain their manners, or will their reputation and sanity be left in tatters as they uncover what really lies at the heart of the river Avon?

The Viscount Who Left Me makes use of the Regency Cthulhu sourcebook, with inspiration taken from Bridgerton and other period stories.

Monsieur Deloffre Has Gone Quite Mad!
Cameron Hays ($4.95, 28 page PDF)

It is Paris, France in the late summer of 1830. The country is about to be submerged in a short-but-violent revolution that deposes the Bourbon king Charles X and replaces him with his cousin Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans. On the cusp of this historic event, wealthy gentleman Geoffrei Deloffre has gone stark raving mad, leaving his social circle to pick up the pieces of his mysterious fractured life.

    For use with Regency Cthulhu.

    Tiger in Human Skin

    Cthulhu Adventure Template
Carl Terence Vandal ($4.00, 18 page PDF)

Template for use in the creation of adventures for sale on the Miskatonic Repository.

    Templa Illuminatus
    Peter Charron ($14.99, 112 pages)

The Keeper’s Guide to Temple Archetypes, Priesthoods and Shrines. Libraries are Illuminated. In many investigation settings libraries are cast in a passive role. They serve as scenery to set a mood or simply as a backdrop against which other action takes place. But libraries can vary dramatically depending on their type and are more than a place to keep books. They are centers of learning, statements of political power and repositories of new, ancient and terrible secrets. They can easily take center stage.

From the author of Anthenaeum Illuminatus.

Flash Cthulhu - Fair Porcine Prize
Michael Reid ($0.00, 8 page PDF)

Lydford, Southwest England, 954 AD. The harvest fair competition brings folk from all the neighbouring villages to show off and sell their prized vegetables, fruits, and livestock. Infrith, a good-natured by rather pitiable peasant, brought his favourite sow, Pigwynn, to compete for the Biggest Porcine prize. But only half an hour before the judgement is about to commence, Infrith causes a scene, crying out that his beloved Pigwynn is missing! Stolen! A black tragedy!

Ultra-short Cthulhu Dark Ages scenario with a focus on investigation, and a pig. Written by Michael Reid, author of the Gold best-selling Branches of Bone - A Cthulhu Dark Ages Viking Age Scenario, the Electrum best-selling A Chill in Abashiri - A 1920s Taisho-Era Japan Scenario, and the Silver best-selling supplement Memorable Major Wounds - Critical Tables and Expanded Injuries for Call of Cthulhu.

    Miskatonic Repository

Flash Cthulhu - Café au Morte
Michael Reid ($0.99, 6 page PDF)

Boston, 1928. Some old friends are out for coffee when the tinkle of the bell announces an unexpected patron's entrance...

An ultra-short scenario where players are ripped from a common, peaceful coffee outing into a life-or-death situation that they need to race to get out of using their negotiation and problem solving skills, or failing that, a burst of intense violence.

    The Mad Man's Auction
    DragonPuppy ($4.99, 11 page PDF)

Investigators are called to the house of Mr. Bateman, an adjunct professor at Miskatonic University and renowned toymaker, who is hosting an auction. Amongst the many items on the auction list, they find that certain items go together: a strange machine designed by Leonardo Davinci, a gold Chinese dragon, and the rolls of music from a player piano. When assembled correctly, the machine whirrs into life and causes disturbances in the city of Arkham, Massachussetts, eventually summoning a demon beyone the investigators' gravest nightmares.

Set in 1920's Arkham, Massachussetts with references to Miskatonic University.

    Starchild from Afar
Axel Karlsson ($3.50, 34 page PDF)

On the remote western shores of Sweden, an artist starts to paint books for children that include mystical symbols, causing an obsession that spreads not only on the island, but through the entire country. This all comes to a head when one of the children on the island disappear under unknown circumstances.

1920's scenario set in Sweden, set on the island of Härön.

    Miskatonic Repository

    Nightmares Beneath the Lonely Plateau
Thomas van den Brink ($6.48, 33 page PDF)

After two renowned mountaineers go missing on an expedition, their friend returns home clutching a small statue, having no recollection of any events from the past few days. Following his trail leads the investigators to an isolated cabin on top of an unnaturally flat plateau, where they find a spiral staircase leading deep into the mountain. Lurking within lies a creature older than mankind itself, dreaming of its release…

1920s scenario that offers a twist on the typical horror scenario, by challenging the players to think not only creatively, but also morally. This scenario subverts the investigators' expectations by presenting no conventional "monster" to defeat, only an encounter with a mind-bending and incomprehensible creature, whose fate is left in the hands of the investigators.

    Operation Midnight Sun
Chicho Ocariz "Arkashka" (Pay-What-You-Want, Rec Price $3.99, 27 page PDF)

Hours after the nazi Operation Weserübung, intelligence points out that the Norwegian ports and Swedish iron may not be the last prizes the Führer wants in the north Atlantic. A very special group is secretly sent to find out everything about the next nazi operation and foul it if possible.

The squad will find themselves involved in a spy game, testing their wits, stealth, survival and combat skills in the far north before completing the investigation and making their discovery of some fabled material of the past. Weird War II scenario (it is recommended although not necessary to use Pulp Cthulhu optional rules).

    American Ghoul
Peter Wilbur ($10.00, 47 page PDF)

A 1920s investigation has the four investigators looking into some strange happenings in the small town of Verde View. Can they discover the evil that resides in the town? Will they survive or perhaps attend their own funeral?

    Miskatonic Repository

The Dollhouse and other Scenario Ideas
Sean Liddle ($2.99, 10 page PDF)

Another Trouble in Threes scenario pack. In the first scenario, The Dollhouse, a group of friends are having a quick weekend reunion get together in their hometown of Bushton Nova Scotia. The 'Unnatural Selections' series is our regular round up of notable Chaosium reviews worth a look.

It's no exaggeration to say readers and reviewers alike love our new Call of Cthulhu: Arkham book, with TechRaptor's comprehensive review concluding, "This is the gold standard for what an RPG supplement should be."

Here's what other readers and reviewers have had to say about our definitive guide to the signature setting of Call of Cthulhu:

    • "Call of Cthulhu: Arkham is a triumph, achieving a near-perfect balance between providing fine detail and allowing for Keeper improvisation. It is, all at the same time, a serious game reference, a sandbox, and a source of scenario seeds too numerous to mention." — Stygian Muse.
    • "Really cool... everything you want from a setting book for Call of Cthulhu." — Gamer's Haunt (video review).
    • "This is probably one of my favourite setting books I have read for any TTRPG... it is a gold mine for creating your own scenarios – 5 stars." — Simon E. (customer review).
    • "Arkham is superb... I've read about halfway through, and my mind is just abuzz with possibilities." — RPG Imaginings (video review).
    • "Call of Cthulhu: Arkham is completely fleshed out for Keepers and Players alike, but leaves enough room to add our own hooks and mysteries... I absolutely love Chaosium products, and this is one of the best – 5 stars." — Peter McS (customer review).
    • "Pretty much every location here has a potential use in a campaign – whether as a target of investigation, a source of employment, a useful resource, or in some other manner... [Call of Cthulhu: Arkham] really takes Keith Herber’s vision forward by making it easier than ever to make use of this material in practice." — Refereeing and Reflection.
    • "I am really enjoying exploring Arkham with this, especially alongside watching Graveyards of Arkham, and following the locations." — Andy McLellan (customer review).
    • "The Arkham setting guide for Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium does everything right and completely kills me. Make a sanity roll!..." — Penandpaper.News.
    • "Detailed, atmospheric and filled to the brim with possible stories. My Players love the isometric views of the various quarters – 5 stars." — Markus (customer review).
    • "Call of Cthulhu returns home... I have the original book and I really enjoyed this upgrade." — Rob Wieland, Forbes.
    • "Terrific, worth every penny – 5 stars." — Eric M (customer review).
    • "Call of Cthulhu: Arkham is, simply put, a triumph... It perfectly captures that 1920s Americana small-town feel, while also letting all the wonderful Lovecraftian weirdness seep into every fissure and crack. This is a perfectly thought out, well-developed product that has clearly had so much love go into it. A triumph, there's no other way to put it. If you run games of Call of Cthulhu, you need this book." — TechRaptor. nb topic image credit: TechRaptor

  10. We mourn the passing of TSR veteran James M. Ward, who recently passed away at the age of 72. Jim was an important figure in the history of tabletop roleplaying games - he was one of the first players at Gary Gygax's Dungeons & Dragons table as the game took form, and co-authored its fourth-ever release, Gods, Demigods and Heroes (1976).

Jim also blazed the TTRPG trail by creating of the first science fantasy roleplaying game Metamorphosis Alpha (1976), and co-authoring Gamma World, the first post-apocalyptic TTRPG (1978). He will also be remembered as the co-author of the renowned Dungeons and Dragons release Deities & Demigods (1980), and author of Greyhawk Adventures (1988), among many other creative endeavours across TTRPGs, card games, and fiction.

James M. Ward leaves a memorable legacy. Our condolences go to his family and friends — Chaosium Inc.

  14. Graveyards of Arkham cast

Earlier today (or yesterday, depending on your time zone) the final episode of our blockbuster actual play series Graveyards of Arkham premiered on Twitch TV - if you missed it, don't worry, it will be up on the Chaosium YouTube channel on Sunday at 2:30pm PT / 5:30pm ET.

Thank you to all the viewers who have watched the show as it unfolded over the past six episodes - especially if you participated in the live Twitch thread, or commented on YouTube. The comments have been almost entirely positive and encouraging: it seems people absolutely loved the show - and would love us to do more - which is very gratifying for all the cast, crew and creative team involved. Let's give them the recognition they deserve:

Many thanks to the amazing cast:

And many thanks to the professionals behind the scenes, without whom the show could not have been made:

First and foremost, we'd like to highlight the fiendish imaginations of Graveyards of Arkham co-writers Belinda Cornish and Darren Ormandy (they wrote the predecessor series Bookshops of Arkham too!).

In Los Angeles, many thanks to producers Becca Scott, Jake Michels and Matt Moynihan at the Good Time Society studio, Director Jake Michels, Costume Designer Alicia Silverstein, Editor Garrett Johnson, Production Designer Daniel Baxter, Director of Photography Nate Cornett and all of the rest of the hardworking production crew.

Chaosium's James Coquillat and David Naylor did a sterling job in post production, getting all the episodes ready for release. Thanks also to Call of Cthulhu creative director Mike Mason, and to Chaosium staff artist Ossi Hiekkala who made the spectacular Graveyards of Arkham Official Movie Poster.

And props to prop makers Gina DeVivo and Katie Michels made the unnervingly realistic human torso cake that features in the production (yum yum!):

    Torso Cake

We'd also like to thank our friends at Roll20 who co-sponsored the show, and whose interface on screen ably helped viewers see how the Call of Cthulhu game actually works in play, e.g.:

    Fumble on Roll20

And biggest thanks of all to the Graveyards of Arkham Kickstarter backers! Putting together an actual play show of this production quality and level of talent was costly (but worth it!) As we have said time and again, we couldn't have done it without you!

Yes I know a double post, but would like to draw attention to a very nice "easter egg" location in this edition. Outskits location 109- Herber's Hill, Named after Keith Herber a musician from the late 1800's. I can only assume this is an homage to the late great Keith Herber who gave us the original Arkham Unveiled.

Yes, as @Mike M has noted in his tribute to Keith Herber, published today on the 15th anniversary of his passing:

    Quote

In writing and producing the new edition of Arkham Unveiled, now simply called "Arkham,” I felt it was only right to honor Doc within the game’s canon, and so there’s a new entry within—look up location OS109 and you’ll find it. Just my way of thanking Doc and remembering him.

  17. Keith Herber (1949-2009)

    -- Keith Herber (January 3, 1949 – March 13, 2009) --

Today marks 15 years since Keith "Doc" Herber passed on.

Doc was born in Detroit, Michigan and later moved to the Bay Area during his time working at Chaosium on Call of Cthulhu. It’s funny how things change, given that Chaosium’s head office is now based in Michigan. Perhaps it’s something in the Michigan water that nurtures game designers?

As well as being an accomplished musician, playing bass guitar for blues bands like the Progressive Blues Band or rock for the likes of The Violent Femmes, Doc was a writer and editor. While he wrote for White Wolf’s Vampire and contributed to small press zines like The Unspeakable Oath and Worlds of Cthulhu, it is his lasting work on the Call of Cthulhu tabletop roleplaying game that most who read this will remember him by.

Doc wrote for Chaosium from the mid-1980s, not that long into the game’s history, and was Call of Cthulhu line editor for around five years after working on the development of the fourth edition of the game, released in 1989. After that, Doc went on to manage the fifth edition of Call of Cthulhu (1992) as well as numerous scenario books and supplements, including The Fungi from Yuggoth (1984),Trail of Tsathogghua (1984),Spawn of Azathoth (1986), Investigator’s Companion Vol 1 & 2 (1993 & 1994), and the Keeper’s Compendium (1993).

In terms of Call of Cthulhu, Doc is probably best remembered for his work on developing what came to be known as “Lovecraft Country” through the books Arkham Unveiled (1990), Return to Dunwich (1991), Kingsport (1991), and Escape from Innsmouth (1992).

    Arkham Unveiled (1990)

    -- Arkham Unveiled (1990) --

These works firmly established the Miskatonic Valley region in game lore. Building on Lovecraft’s, Derleth’s, and others works, Doc grafted meat on to the bones, breathing life into these fictional locations with quirky characters, strange buildings, and engaging plot seeds. It was a vast amount of work, whether as lead writer or editor, in pulling all the strands together to form a consistent, believable, and immersive setting—and I should know, given that I’ve been working on updating and expanding these books! It was no small feat and I for one certainly understand and recognize the effort and passion Doc had for this unique and groundbreaking series.

Keith left Chaosium for new dimensions in 1994. A few years later, he would return to his love of Call of Cthulhu by setting up Miskatonic River Press in 2009 to publish supplements for the game under license, as well as fiction anthologies. It was in the early days of this new and exciting venture that Keith left us all.

In writing and producing the new edition of Arkham Unveiled, now simply called "Arkham,” I felt it was only right to honor Doc within the game’s canon, and so there’s a new entry within—look up location OS109 and you’ll find it. Just my way of thanking Doc and remembering him.

    graveyards-with-becca.png

The 'Unnatural Selections' series is our regular round up of notable Chaosium reviews worth a look.

The early reactions were ecstatic, and now four episodes in viewers continue to love our actual play series Graveyards of Arkham.

Here's a sampling of YouTube comments by viewers from episodes twothree and four!

    • "Great sequel to the Bookshops of Arkham series! Just top notch all around and once again enjoying the fantastic work of Mark Meer!" — @SilverViper219.
    • "Woot! I'll be a keeper for my first time in March. This is fun and informative for me." — @MiniatureMashup
    • "Fantastic stuff from Mark and the cast as always!! But also hats off to the ‘NPC’ this week [Paula Deming]! Great work!" — @phoenixiwaki
    • "Another excellent slow-burn episode - with some great Keeper NPCs and Guest NPC - the creepy tension gathering to a storm cloud as the mysteries unfold..." — @aztecjaguar6571
    • "I love the way you have organised and projected this game. So, as we all know, CoC is just a "game" but you bring this to life as a play - almost a slice of real, if creepy, life. The scene setting, the costumes, the background music and of course the multiple roles played by you are vivid and engrossing. Real talent, thank you for your efforts." - Tim
    • "I love the sets and the costumes...they really are a nice touch...but I could just relax, close my eyes and become immersed in this "actual play" due to the fantastic audio and voice talents. Bravo! I guess this is similar to what people were entertained with before television and movies." — @rpmfla
    • "The chemistry this cast has, man. There's something so perfect about the Keeper having to pop into the middle of a conversation between investigators to remind them of their leads, because both the players and the investigators are just spiralling into confusion ... Chef's kiss. It just makes me want to hunt down a group and start playing. Chaosium, thanks for a lovely series. (again)" — @yourspoookyaunt
    • "This was great. I loved how everyone really came alive. Archibald with his past. Vic with the great distressing with the twine. Betty being catty and mean. And Theodore dealing with death. This was an amazing chapter for all these characters. 100% loved it." — @TheFaulkned
    • "Tension deliciously builds. Becca enters at the cliffhanger." — @AetherflyerGames
    • "I'm not sure why but CoC actual plays are the only ones I can consistently consume. I just love them so much. I originally only intended to watch Andrew Leman's episode as I'm a lifetime member of the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society (Leman is one of the founders) but this ended up making me subscribe to Chaosium's channel and follow this particular series. Given the other comments I've seen, I'll probably check out Bookshops of Arkham, too." — @ryanahr2267
    • "So nice to see some effort; costumes and a set rather than a series of zoom boxes. I appreciate this has a production budget but it really helps the atmosphere and immersion. Top level stuff!" — @ashleyblake4899
    • "Goosebumps on top of goosebumps!" — @dee_w784
    • "The dinner was truly horrifying. The players really got rattled by the feast presented to them!" — @LightningRaven42
    • "I mean Bookshops of Arkham was already excellent, but this is absolutely next level!" — @niccolomereghetti4808
    • "All the cast is so good. Their performance in the dream scene is deeply moving." — @Himbros
    • "Becca Scott in 1920s attire looks she is a character straight from The Great Gatsby." — @aztecjaguar6571
    • "Not to be missed, a classic." — @FleshyInterloper
    • "A BIT of a cliffhanger? Talking about an understatement there 😉 So when is the next one??" — @sanja2776

    Thank you, @AndreJarosch & @MOB.

    Next question @Chaosium:

I know Chaosium doesn't want to see any AI work in product submissions.  What about AI in "mood boards" & "reference images" & the like, when the author can't find good images to show an artist?  I could see it used in place of "found online" art, to help the artist & author communicate better... not in place of paid art.

(I ask specifically because I've got some ideas I've never really seen adequately portrayed -- and wouldn't care to attempt even a rough sketch -- but I suspect could be explored via AI imagery)

Please do not include AI content (e.g. Midjourney. ChatGPT etc) in your BRP Challenge submission.
