  1. Handouts, and imagination, mostly. And a crudely-sketched map on scrap pieces of paper, not a gridded battlemat.

This year, though, I've painted up some 20s-era miniatures as I've had spare time. It's been for fun at this point; I haven't broken them out in play.

  2. The critical is based on the final modified skill level, both in my gameplay and according to Renaissance Deluxe. As per page 36:

    Quote

    Critical Successes

Sometimes a character performs a task especially well. If the dice roll in a test is equal to or less than 10% of the modified skill, then a critical success has been achieved (e.g. A character with 70% in a skill would get a critical success on a roll of 7 or less – remember, always round to the nearest whole number).

From my reading, "modified" includes Haste/Difficulty modifiers and Close Combat or Range Combat situational modifiers.

I'd truly like to hear more about this.  Gaslight NY would be great.

There was an announcement made by Mystical Throne Entertainment on June 2015 about their "Five Points" setting guide. I haven't heard anything about it in a while, but looking at their August "Throne Report" (newsletter) shows that layout is finished and they're waiting on cover art and 2 pieces of interior art.

Biggest problem maybe the fact that I'm using Route 20 and so many players are so entrenched in DND it's hard to break that mold.

Yes, that's likely your biggest problem.

Find some other players that can think tactically and don't throw themselves mindlessly into battle. Or provoke battle when there are other options available. It sounds like many of your most entrenched players are jettisoning themselves from the game anyway, so why not wipe the slate clean and give it another shot with a fresh group of players.

I own the RQ3 softcover perfect-bound all-in-one-book edition that was printed in 1993.

I've got a copy of the all-in-one-book, too. It's a great collection and format, but the binding was very suspect. At least mine was. I'm very careful with all of my Rpg books, and it didn't hold up to even casual reading. One day I was flipping through it and a page came out in the Monster chapter. It went back on my bookshelf after that and has stayed there, and I've referenced the flimsy cover books since then. They've proved to be a bit more durable.

That being said, RQ3 was not a bad rules system - just with perfect hindsight, it tried to fix things that weren't broken and introduced new things that were broken. The goal of the new RQ4 is to be the RQ3 that should have been.

I hope you guys reach that goal. If you do, I'll definitely be throwing some cash in Chaosium's direction after its release.

RQ2's Saga of Rurik the Restless is still memorable to me, but I can barely recall anything from Cormack the Pict's narrative examples in RQ3.

I still have vivid recollections of Cormack the Pict's narrative examples, likely because RQ3 was my first introduction to RuneQuest back in the mid-80s. RQ2 might not had much in the way of market entry in my part of the US back in the day. I don't recall ever seeing it in local game stores.

I recently join the organized play group "love RunQuest Glorantha" but it appears to manly be focused on CoC. What are the best book to get me started?

Are you going to be mainly playing or are you going to be Keeping as well? If the former, I'd just get 7e Investigator's Handbook and play the hell out of some mysteries/campaigns. Then branch out to the 7e rulebook if you're going to be Keeping some campaigns, or one-shots.

Looking at picking up the following. Is there anything I should add?

Call of the keeper screen 7th
    Keeper companion 1 & 2
    Malleus Monstrorum
    Pulp Cthulhu
    Call of Cthulhu 7th

Seems like quite a lot to digest as it is.

    Things you might consider:

What shocking suggestions from the CoC 7th edition line editor! "Get nearly every CoC 7e book and supplement released so far, and then get more 7e products when they're available". ;)

  8. I'd have to agree with @rust. CoC has quite of a lot of skills already. I think it could be argued that, conversely, the skill list could be shorter to avoid skill creep. For example, I play 5th/6th edition but I think that 7th edition went in the right direction when it consolidated Fist/Punch, Kick, and Headbutt down into one Fighting(Brawl) skill.

Rather than create additional skills that are rather specialized, I prefer to take into account an investigator's Occupation and their backstory to determine how their skills can be applied. Someone with a criminal occupation is going to be able to leverage a Fast Talk, Bargain, or Persuade when liaising with criminals. Not that likely for a dilettante. That's not to say that a dilettante couldn't learn to do that in-play, over time. But there would be task penalties to begin with that would gradually lessen with exposure, practice, and perhaps mentoring.

Unfortunately, I don't see a lot of use for a Domestics skill, or any other that I'd consider to be a mundane skill. How often is something like Domestics going to be used in play? Is any player going to be that interested in sinking points into that skill, or leveraging it in-play? It adds some investigator 'flavor', I guess, but it could something easily fleshed out in an investigator's backstory.

  9. Chaosium seems to have their hands full with other priorities at this time. Being "late" or missing out on publishing independently-submitted content might not be that important.

It appeared that one of BRP Essentials' primary purposes was to serve as the backbone for other in-house products - a new edition of Mythic Iceland, and whatever other product lines they've got under their hat. And even BRP Essentials, and its supported products, seem way down the list of importance compared with getting CoC7e on the right track and prepping for the release of CRQ4.

It ends up being a good window of opportunity for other publishers, like TDM, who can broaden their catalog with Mythras Space, or Mythras Starships... or whatever it's called. :)

I understand not adding two Characteristics for base skill chances like the MRQ line. I'm guessing that is the 'whiff'notion referred to (as in it 'stinks' and it is a 'left-over' from a different development line).

I don't think that's the definition of "whiff" he's using in this context. Maybe it's obscure US-slang, but he's using it more to mean hit-and-miss. For example, failing to hit a baseball with a bat, or a golf ball with a club, is referred to as "whiffing", or to "whiff". I don't think it has anything to do with malodorous game mechanics. :)
