might I suggest historic Charleston, South Carolina?

Yes, and that I wouldn't have had as a first option on my list😁 But there is certainly something Fonritan in those pictures.

Thanks for this, that's pretty much what I thought Garguna should look like. At least the official parts of the city, the Vadeli Quarter might look a bit different...

  2. Yeah, seems like it won't be published any time soon😔 A map of Garguna would be nice to see, because now I have to create everything from a scratch.

I have an image in my head how Garguna should look like. I planned to use ancient Babylon as a reference for the city (central parts at least), because there are a lot of nice 3d pictures of the city. In my mind I would add a bit more Persian, and arabic flavour in general to ancient Babylon. The slums are something else of course.

Any more suggestions for architectural references?

    That's absolutely true.

I had serious reservations about the Fonritan material in Revealed Mythologies and portraying the Glorious Ones as a supernumerated Necklace of Pamalt, the whole thing just falls down.  For example, since when are perfume making and falcon training core parts of Fonritan civilization that requires a specialized deity to represent?

There are specialized deities in other parts of Glorantha also. According to GtG, the main exported goods from Fonrit are: Cloth, Gems, Gold, Herbs, Ivory,
Metalworking, Pearls, Perfume, Shells, Slaves, Spices. Seems that perfume making is quite important to Fonrit. Not less important (from my point of view) than Minlister for Sartarites, for example.

    I agree😁

Some of the material you have is simply duplicating each other.

That's true. I try to make a list for myself, where I can see which gods are worshipped in different layers of society, or in different areas in nearby lands. For example Ikadz is worshipped both by nobility of Fonrit, and by actual chaos worshippers, like broo. I try to make a list, where I can check (if the pc's meet a veldang slave for example) what are the possible cults for certain group of people.

  4. I started the "Fonrit resources" -thread, but this set of questions is more suitable for this thread. I have collected information about the gods of Fonrit and areas nearby. I try to make a document for myself and my player about what gods/cults are available to have a more structured view of the setting. The information is too scattered to various volumes, and I needed to write down a simple document to summarize the info.

Nothing is my invention, I collected the list from various sources.

    - Are the gods in right section? If not, to which section should I remove them?

    - Am I missing some gods (for sure, but which)? I try make the list as complete as possible. It is not fully canonical.

    - What Fonritan names are used for the gods known also in Genertela? For example Eurmal is Bolongo.

    - Who worships the these gods? For example, the 17 Glorious Ones seem to be worshipped mainly by masarins and their household..

    - Which entity is spirit, which is god etc. Any errors?

    - Other things you'd like to comment?

However, if you think it's an interesting figure to include, I'd use either 1) Ygg (since Ygg will be in the Gods of Glorantha book) and likely is embodied in the form of Harrek; 2) Wachaza (although more likely to be the god of the hostile malasp); or if you have access to old RQ3 Cults Book 3) Tskanth (as his connection with pirates and barracuda seem relevant).

I thought Wachaza and Tsankth also, but actually after a second thought, I kind of like the idea that Um-Oradin is Ygg more. Um-Oradin is not canon, but I like the idea, so it doesn't matter. Maybe Baraku was the leader of the rebel gods invading Pamaltela, but Um-Oradin aka Ygg (no need for sail through ice feats in Pamaltela, that's why those feats are not present) was one of his fiercest captains (because YGMW).

Um-Oradin - Overseer of the winds.
He is the master of the winds, he is an unpredicatable god, restless and
vengeful. He holds in his ivory coffer the goddesses Baras, the Sea Spout Witch
and Keruan the typhoon who he can unleash on his enemies. Outsiders equate this
god with Orlanth, his main center of worship is the city of Sarro.

Thanks for this davecake. I'll use this for sure.

It would be nice to hear some of your session seeds, if only with few words.

(But I'd like to read the chronicle of your Pavis campaign)

Well, it would be quite a job to write it all down. I have almost every session described as an email in finnish, but constructing 250-300 sessions to somehow publishable shape would be too much. Basically we started small, and ended up to very heroic campaign. We kind of played through Hero Wars in Prax. It's time to start a very, very different campaign now😁

Ompalam may be a bigger god than Garangordos but his interest in providing magic is likely to be less.

So, I'll treat him as the god learnerish Invisible God variant he is (in play terms).

He sounds like a Fonritan Ygg, or rough equivalent thereof. Will probably provide similar spells.

That's a good idea to steal some magic from various Ygg cult writeups. Any ideas about Um-Oradin's mythical deeds or background? Is he actually Ygg?

A Corsair is a raider, pirate or privateer, so probably not worshipped by your standard fisherman or merchant captain.

That's true for sure😁 What I meant was that how farspread is his cult along the Fonritan coast? Is he the primary pirate god? Or Baraku?

  7. I have few more questions about Fonrit:

    - What is the difference between the cults of Ompalam and Garangordos? Ompalam is the great god of Fonritan pantheon, so I guess he provides more magic (three runes: chaos, master, harmony). Garangordos is the cultural hero, more like hero cult with maybe one or two rune spells? Who is allowed to worship these deities? Only masarins of course, but how is the worship divided between these two seemingly quite similar cults? What is the role of Tentacule, who is yet another god of slavery?

    - Who is Um-Oradin the Corsair God exactly? Are his runes movement, air and water (as suggested in Glorantha cult one pagers by hkokko)? What is his mythical background? There are not too many sources about this god. At least not with my googlefu skills. Among whom is he primarily worshipped? All along the Fonritan coast?

  8. Thanks for the replies so far. I have both Enclosure #2 and Heroes v1 #6, but I didn't remember that these volumes contain information about Fonrit. I just bought the Revealed Mythologies and Monster Island pdfs, so that is covered also.

    Any more ideas?

  9. Hello,

we are about to finish our 10-year old campaign in Pavis. The next campaign will be set in Fonrit and around (Loral, maybe Kumanku). Almost everything else is still unclear. We know however, that the next campaign will have  elements like boats and seafaring , pirates, social dilemmas, scheming and backstabbing, slavery and expeditions. After a very heroic campaign in Pavis, we have planned to keep the next one on quite a low level. I have found/purchased the following Fonrit resources already:

    - Guide to Glorantha and Argan Argar Atlas

    - Tradetalk #14

    - the excellent Mythras Encounter Generator with plenty of Fonrit related content, and tools for GM's from Notes of Pavis site

    - this forum with all it's Fonrit related topics

I know that there will be a Fonrit book by Chaosium at some point, but I doubt that we'll see it in time before we start our campaign (It's not the first in pipe, right?). So, I'm interested about all kinds of material related to Fonrit and Loral, at least. Meaning maps, cult writeups, place descriptions, session seeds, herobands/organizations, npcs etc. The material doesn't have to be Gloranthan even, if it has the "Fonritan vibe" from your point of view. Meaning inspirational art, harbour maps from real world, building concept art etc.

Have you run a campaign set in Fonrit? It would be nice to hear what kind of story line have you created?

    Thank you in advance.

A long time ago, we encountered ghouls coming from the sea; But I can find in which book they are described.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but there's a picture of spectral  Fonritan sailors coming from the sea in Barran the Monster Killer -scenario (Strangers in Prax, p.49). I remembered them to be ghouls first, but they seem to be ghosts according to stats...

  11. I used this as a mythic backbone for the place:

    http://jane-williams.me.uk/glorantha/swords/wikka/wikka.php?wakka=ChronHG2

My Horn Gate had a lot of undead, corruption, degenerates, and vast underground halls (more like plains) with wonders. There were passages to both Eiritha's and Humakt's otherworlds. Ridiculously powerful mad vampire ruled at least most of the place. Huge risks and huge rewards for the players.

  12. I have a stupid question after 30 years of Glorantha-hobby: what or who is the wyter of Pavis city itself? There are of course dozens of wyters in Pavis (temples, New Pavis, Old Pavis families, trolls & aldryami In Rubble, other organizations like guilds etc). Pavis is the city god. Does the city itself have a wyter? Is Pavis that wyter?

What is the importance of Real City in this context?

    Glorantha wiki says:

    • "He apotheosized as the city god of Pavis, retired to his own temple in 860 ST."

    -->meaning Real City temple

Did establishing of New Pavis change this somehow?

If Pavis is the wyter, what kind of powers he has as a wyter (not as a city god or cult)? I mean you could still benefit from the wyter without beeing a lay member in the Pavis cult?

  13. The trickster in our previous campaign used a Hallucinate spell to escape from a hellhound on a Lightbringers' Quest. He created a flying carpet and was farting more speed for it. The funny thing was that only he could see the illusions he created. The hellhound looked a bit confused...

  14. In my gaming group you get an automatic +D6% to any skills successfully used during the quest. You also get +5D6% to be used between the main abilities used during the quest. In the Hill of Gold - quest you could choose to take the full 5D6% increase to your melee combat for example. Or you could divide it between a communication skill (for example +3D6%) and melee combat (+2D6%), which both are in an important role during the quest. This +5D6% is cumulative with the +D6% you get anyway...

Also as a reward, you always get +1 to character's POW and maximum POW is increased by one per quest (21->22 for humans for example).

A hero usually gets a hero ability related to the quest also.

This system has been in use for 10+years and has worked for us at least...

  15. We use the system where the one with higher minus from their actual skill wins:

    Player: ability 120%, rolls 80

    Opponent: ability 80%, rolls 41

--> both succeed, but the player wins because he succeeds with - 40% (against opponent's - 39%)

And of course special wins normal succes etc.
