I am working a Master of Orion ruleset. Nothing commercial, just being a word document that I will use to arbiter my own game....
However I would also like to share the resulting Word document publicly on this very website! _^

My question is about some rule from other game I am reusing.
Obviously lot of rule are used everywhere and it is apparent (I Think...) that it is no biggie...

However, looking for a vehicle rules... (car, motorbike, etc...) I only find some quick and convenient one in "Luther Arkwright", is that a problem if I put plagiarize custom version of it in my publicly available word document?

    Yes, it's a potential problem.

Even if you're creating something as a free resource that you want to make public, you need to seek permission if you're looking to reuse text from a published work, because that work is subject to copyright. All our books carry a clear statement in this regard: "This book may not be reproduced on whole or in part by any means without permission from The Design Mechanism, except for purposes of illustration, discussion and game play."

Where the Luther Arkwright vehicle rules are concerned, we wouldn't grant permission for you to lift them. The main reason is because we already have the Mythras Gateway license that is used by 3rd party creators to produce their own Mythras-compatible products. There are some conditions in the Gateway license, and granting permission for you to replicate about 6 or 7 pages of the vehicle rules would go against those conditions, basically calling the whole license into question.

I received my hardcovers of Mythras and Monster Island and I am very happy with how they came out. They are very solidly built and will definitely get a lot of use at my table.

    Cheers!

Both the quality and price of Lulu's hardcovers has improved a great deal recently. I've taken delivery of proof copies of all our latest titles, and I'm extremely happy with the quality of the binding with all of them - especially the thicker titles.

  3. It's not referenced specifically in either Legend or Mythras, but is one of these areas where GMs should apply a little simple logic based on the size and anatomy of the creature. Hacking off one leg of a giant spider is likely to enrage it. but unlikely to impede it's movement by much, or impair it's ability to fight. But if you hack off two legs from the same side, and then the creature is going to be unbalanced and start to suffer. It will likely consider fleeing or seeking safer ground.

We do give a lot of advice about how creatures fight in different conditions in Mythras - and these obviously apply to Legend too.

    This makes me very happy!

Have you a tentative timeline for this? Will the current offerings that are already in Hardback be any different after your revamping?

We're prioritising titles that aren't on Lulu yet. Once we're done, we'll then add format options for existing titles. The great thing about Lulu is that it's far, far easier to create and modify titles than it is on Drivethru. Faster too, so just keep an eye on the Lulu store.

Hmmm. I notice that some of the Mythras books are available in Hardcover on Lulu but not others. The Classic Fantasy book is but the Mythras core book isn't. Is that likely to change in the future? I much prefer hardcover for my books as they tend to last longer for me.

Yes. We're revamping the entire line we have on Lulu as we speak. The aim is to have everything available in hardback. Lulu's prices and options have become a lot more favourable, so we're taking advantage of it.

  6. Are you interested in trying Mythras with an experienced GM, but never had the opportunity? Have you read through the rules but wonder how they work in play? Are you maybe just curious about roleplaying games generally (or know someone who is), and want to try them out?

Our good friend Nigel Clarke is about to start an Introduction to the Mythras series of games. Things start with Shrine of the Traitor Gods and later move on to other, different, scenarios generally designed to help people get into Mythras.

Nigel will be running games on Saturdays late afternoon GMT to allow for players from both Europe and the US East Coast to join in. There will be a Session Zero to discuss ground rules and any issues people might have regarding content. Start date to be discussed.

Details are on Nigel's Discord channel and play will be on the Foundry VTT which requires no software download and just a modern browser.

  7. Our latest scenario for Mythras is 'A Bird in the Hand', a dangerous adventure set on Monster Island, involving the characters in the theft of a strange and unique bird from the clutches of a local rogue. But theft has consequences, and on Monster Island, those consequences can be dire. The straightforward soon becomes complicated, leading the characters deep into the Tane Jungle, and the hunting lands of the lizardfolk tribes...

Written by John Holmes, A Bird in the Hand is 56 pages, and includes a special guide to sandbox exploration of Monster Island. Priced at $13.99 for the Print on Demand copy (including free PDF) and $7.99 for the standalone PDF, the scenario is available now from the TDM store, Lulu, DrivethruRPG, and shortly from Aeon Games in the UK.

  8. Casting the Runes, Investigative Roleplaying in the World of M. R. James, is the latest release from The Design Mechanism. Using the acclaimed Gumshoe Engine (designed by Robin D. Laws), players take on the roles of Edwardian investigators involving themselves in the supernatural, uncanny, and sinister workings of the occult. From ancient demons to haunted artefacts; biblical monsters to ghosts and vampires; secret societies to lone sorcerers dabbling in the damned; Casting the Runes contains everything you need to recreate the tales of M. R. James and his contemporaries such as Arthur Machen, William Hope Hodgson, Algernon Blackwood and many others. The Edwardian Era is brought to vivid life in the pages of the game, and extensive background information shows how society, class, and economics worked in the period directly before The Great War. Using the Gumshoe system to create and manage clues is given copious attention, and the game includes two introductory scenarios to begin your investigations of the macabre.

The book is 200 pages, black and white, hardcover, and available from The Design Mechanism webstore and DrivethruRPG. The editions available from us directly are full offset; DrivethruRPG provides Print on Demand.

Mythras Imperative Reloaded also has rules for Supers and for a Simple Magic System. These aren't in Mythras Imperative, btw.

Um... Mythras Imperative Reloaded isn't an actual 'thing' - that's just the tagline we gave to the post announcing that we'd added some more content to Mythras Imperative, so searching the internet for Mythras Imperative Reloaded isn't going to offer much aside from a forum post.

@Belisar, Mythras Imperative is a short, free, introduction to the Mythras rules. It has everything you need to try the system, including a simple magic system and a range of superpowers. It isn't meant to compare with the BGB. For that, you should take a look at the Mythras core rules.

Where core Mythras and the BGB differ is in scope: Mytheas offers a fantasy-slanted generic set of rules for d100 roleplaying, whereas the BGB offers lots of different options covering a wide range of genres. Mythras expands its fields via the various supplements, as follows:

    • Mythras Companion: new rules and some expansions, including social conflict and rules for chases
    • Luther Arkwright: Science Fantasy roleplaying with rules for psionics, inter-planar travel, and cross-planes characters
    • Worlds United: SF golden age Rockets and Ray Guns planetary fantasy, set in a solar system where the Martian invasions of HG Wells and Orson Wells actually took place. Venus is a lush jungle world with dinosaurs and ophidians, while Mars is peaceful... for now.
    • Thennla: fantasy setting based on the classical world. Magic rich, with highly detailed cultures.
    • Mythic Earth series: Historical based supplements that apply a fantasy slant to Dark Ages Britain, Republican Rome, and Medieval Constantinople
    • Classic Fantasy: rules and systems for replicating the old school D&D experience with the Mythras rules: familiar character classes, traditional AD&D style spells, treasures, magic items, and lots and lots of monsters. Fully compatible with everything else we publish.
    • Fioracitta: A fantasy city based on the Italian city states of the Renaissance; lots of atmosphere, intrigue, new magical traditions, and ideas for a full campaign
    • Monster Island: Swords & Sorcery goodness set on a mysterious, dangerous tropical island inhabited by a rag-tag human colony, lizardfolk, serpentfolk sorcerers, and more monsters than you can run away from.
    • Book of Quests: interlinked fantasy scenarios forming a full campaign. Self contained and a great introduction to Mythras.

As others have mentioned, M-Space is a standalone, self-contained SF game that goes down the hard SF route, and is capable of replicating most SF genres, from Star Wars to Interstellar.

Lyonesse, also by us, is a Mythras-based self contained game based on the fantasy trilogy by Jack Vance. Unique background, very unique magic, and of interest if you really like high fantasy with a good dose of whimsy and the occasional brutal combat.

Our UK-based partners, Aeon Games, have just released Perceforest, a chivalric setting for Mythras based on a 15th Century text, and they are also producing their own Mythos-based game, 'Weird of Hali', which is based on the novels by John Michael Grier, and written by the author.

So there's a lot to choose from, and I'm sure you'll find something that will help your exploration of d100 RPGs.

I very much agree with all the praise that has been heaped on the book - it is magnificent. Besides the core book, I have also ordered the two adventures on DriveThruRPG to demonstrate my commitment.

Is there news on future products (can’t find any on the website)? A Forest of Tantrevalles sourcebook?

A Tantravelles expansion is most likely, as is further detail on the major cities.

  11. The Mythras Gateway wouldn't be the best approach for Renaissance. I think what Pete and Ken need is someone who can take on pipeline, production and even some content creation to keep the Renaissance line afloat.

TDM has a pretty full pipeline of its own, and I'm not familiar enough with the current Renaissance line-up to be able to assess how, or even if we could, help.

    But it's something ponder.

If we were to help out, we wouldn't insist on any Mythraicising of Renaissance: it's its own thing, works extremely well as its own thing, and should stay as its own thing.

  12. On the subject of delivery delays, we can't help or do much if you bought your print copy via Drivethru. As the book is produced via print on demand, any print or delivery issues need to be taken up with Drivethru directly: we cannot assist.

If you buy a book directly from us, then we have a procedure on our website.

  13. Soph is Sophia Conner, the TDM Art Director and graphic designer who put Fioracitta together, commissioned all the illustrations, and has also fallen in love with the setting. Her comments were made on Facebook; it's not a review.

  14. Fioracitta: the Heart of Power is now available.

Fioracitta, the latest campaign setting for Mythras, is here. A complete fantasy city, inspired by the Italian city states of the Renaissance, Fioracitta: The Heart of Power, explores the city, its people, long history, myths, gods, and perhaps most importantly, magic, in evocative detail. Explore how Fioracitta came to dominate the surrounding lands of Ittara; the many factions that vie for control; the enigmatic non-human species who call Fioracitta home; the gods and goddesses who may be ambivalent to their worshippers, or subtly directing their fates.

This is a detailed, but amazingly accessible setting for the Mythras RPG, but can be comfortably integrated into many other fantasy roleplaying system campaigns. Fioracitta offers guidance for creating Fioracittan characters; cabals and secret societies; generating specific historical events to make every campaign unique; and provides a compelling backdrop to campaigns dripping with intrigue and adventure, magic and tragedy.

Join us in Fioracitta’s streets. The book is available from DrivethruRPG in hard and softcover, and The Design Mechanism webstore in hardcover. The PDF is included free with all print purchases.

Since you've mentioned the famous brothel:
Regardless of the fact that Fioracitta is a city from a Renaissance era, it is extremely progressive in terms of LGBTQ and open-minded. In this respect, it reminds me strongly of such "counter culture" places like Cadsandria or Jerry Cornelius novels (both Michael Moorcock).
Gender is fluid. Weddings between same-sex couples are allowed  and it's not a problem to see Ophidians, sometimes dressed like a woman and sometimes like a man, and other stuff.

Fioracitta is full of lust, dandyism and eccentricity.
It's even in the details - e.g. the rule for inspiring fashion trends.

I've had some fantastic roleplaying scenarios based around creating fashion trends: that time the Straw Dogs mercenary band went shopping for banquet clothes in Milan in a Hawkmoon campaign; an outrageous fashion designer based around Jean Paul Gaultier creating the ultimate wedding dress in a Lyonesse playtest; the shopping montage when my Horror on the Orient Express characters had to buy new clobber in Zagreb...

You can have a lot of fun with Fashion.

No questions at the moment (the supplement is well written and structured, and my only question was already answered on the official Errata thread).
What I like is the storytelling through illustrations. If you're reading the "book" (PDF) from cover to cover, then you can follow the story of  a group of Avventurieri (group of adventurers). This reminds me of the Anathym's Saga illustrations from the Core Rule Book .

Look closely at The Lady. Does she remind you of anyone?

  17. If you thought that only TDM produced Mythras material, you'd be mistaken. There is a steadily growing field of third party publishers creating new, innovative, Mythras books - everything from full games to campaign settings and adventures. We thought it time to draw your attention to these publications, and hope you'll give them your support.

    Aeon Games Publishing
Aeon Games Publishing is our official publishing partner serving the UK and European markets (and beyond). They produce most of our core titles under license, but are also gearing up to release two original Mythras publications of their own.

    Perceforest
Welcome to the feudal fantasy world called Perceforest! A World of Chivalry, Wonder, Existential Menace, and Sacred Kingship

Perceforest is a fictional world of high chivalry set against the forces of the primal wild. It is based on a vast epic of the same name, written in the fourteenth century by an anonymous author about the lands that would later be known as England and Scotland. The author, Mark Shirley, introduces a vast array of characters: kings, knights, damsels, sorcerers, and even the occasional talking animal. Perceforest is a world rich in magic. There are evil sorcerers and enchanter-knights, damsels steeped in secret lore and witches weaving spells. The land is strewn with wonders — invisible castles, magical swords, men made of iron, and even fish on horseback! Players can have characters such as talking animals, playful badger knights, magpie heralds, or snake magicians. The fortunes of a kingdom are tied to the health and character of its king, and when one prospers so does the other. As the saga opens both of the Twin Kingdoms are ruled by ailing kings, a state of affairs that results in lawlessness and chaos. As members of the ruling elite, the player characters are expected to take up the fight against injustice and help to keep the kingdom safe until the king recovers.

Perceforest is written by Mark Shirley and will be available soon from both Aeon Games Publishing and TDM.

The second publication from Aeon is the enigmatically titled 'Weird of Hali': we'll share more on that one at a later date.

    Mythras Gateway Publishers

The list of Mythras Gateway publishers continues to grow. M-Space and Odd Soot , and Old Bones Publishing you may know all about, but there are some new  publishers onboard, with new titles just released, or in the process of production. Let's take a look at what's available under the Mythras Gateway license...

    Seasons of the Dead
Seasons of the Dead (Heath Delashmit), brings post-apocalypse horror survival to Mythras, with a self contained game focusing on life after a world changing disaster.

    Chad Bowser

    The Priory
Set during the Anarchy, The Priory is a horror scenario inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's The Rats in the Wall. Called to investigate mysterious activities around a priory in western England, the player characters, in the service of the Bishop of Winchester, encounter secrets much older than time. The Prioryhas been written and playtested. It's targeted for an early 2021 release. If you're interested in playtesting, email playtesting@possumcat.com

    A Harsh Winter

It is targeted for an early 2021 release. If you're interested in playtesting, email playtesting@possumcat.com

    The Beasts of Rome
The emperor wants the fiercest creatures for his games. But, one has escaped and is on a murderous rampage in Rome. Can it be stopped before more Romans die? Can the player characters avoid Nero's wrath in their hunt for the creature? The Beasts of Rome is written.  It's targeted for a mid 2021 release.
If you're interested in playtesting, email playtesting@possumcat.com.

    The Time of Troubles
A setting book covering one of the most turbulent periods in Russian history. This 250k word supplement lets players step back to the early 17th century when the Swedes, Poles, and others all vied to conquer Russia as a civil war waged. Take on the roles of Cossack frontiersmen, members of the English Muscovy company, the Russian streltsy or others as you explore this vast land. It's currently written and playtested. It's targeted for a late 2021 release. If you're interested in playtesting, email playtesting@possumcat.com.

    Vanishing Goblin
Betrayal at Shadewood Keep is another Classic Fantasy gateway scenario, and now Vanishing Goblin is working on completing the final maps for Rooms with a View. Rooms with a View gives you twelve unique locations that you can drop into any existing campaign, to use as springboards to dozens of adventures. Each location comes complete with colour maps, detailed NPCs, rich history, and interesting adventure hooks to stimulate your imagination.

Rooms with a View should be completed by November.

    Frostbyte Books

FrostByte Books will release two titles this fall. First, M-SPACE moves to version 1.2, with rule updates and new artwork. After that, Scott Crowder has written a combined scenario and sandbox called Junkyard Station, dropping players into a starship graveyard. It grabs the PCs by the throat and refuses to let go.

    Carbon Copy

New as a Gateway licensee, Carbon Copy is currently in development and early play-testing of its game of "real world" occult roleplaying under the working title White Rabbit Green.  Spiritual transmigration, transtemporal identity, and mystical transhumanism in the spirit of Cloud Atlas, The Bone Clocks, and The Wicked + The Divine.  When you're the smartest person in the room, what will you do to change the world?

    Earl of Fife Games

Earl of Fife Games is working on a Mythras conversion of a great module that was previously released for the Demon Gate system. The name of the adventure is the Coast of Thrall, and should be available towards the end of October.

    Old Bones Publishing

Old Bones Publishing already has three excellent scenarios available for Mythras, and anticipates two releases by the end of 2020, and two more in the first half of 2021, totalling two scenarios and two supplements--and there is much more in various stages of development.

Quite an array, and lots to be excited about!

If you're interested in publishing material for Mythras under the Gateway License, drop us a line at designmechanism@gmail.com, or take a look at the license itself.
