    A sense of scale

There 's another approach to scale here- which for gaming purposes tends to get fudged- but illustrates how scale has shifted dramatically. If you look at most modern countries, they have a number of indigenous minority languages (IMLs). So the British Isles has in addition to English , has Welsh, Irish, Gaelic as its three main IMLs (listed in degrees of health). It also has Manx (related to Irish and Gaelic), Jèrriais, Guernésiais (related to Norman French) and Cornish (related to Welsh). Every single one of those languages have different accents and dialect variations in vocabulary and pronunciations. And then, there are the dialect variations of English such as Geordie and things like Scots and Ulster-Scots which straddle the dialect- language divide, plus British and Irish Sign Languages. All this in a group of islands much smaller than the US. And this is not a unique situation- hello Spain, Germany, France and the US with the First Nations' languages. And this tells us the size of most people and communities' world. A lot smaller than ours. This makes the scale of say the Lunar Empire seem reasonable to me, especially when you consider that the barbarians have magic...
  2. Jeff Richards is running a Big Rubble con game in a few weeks time, and remember that RQ 2 and RQ3 material are very comparable with the new rules.
  3. I really don't worry that much about ancient world analogues in tech levels in Glorantha. I don't have that depth of knowledge. Thus in my Glorantha, the Howling Tower has some stained glass windows which catch the final moments of sunset... I have to say, having stained giant insect window sounds creepier and more organic (HR Giger like). Things I do emphasise are such details there a few real roads as we know it in modern day earth, its trails and tracks in the main; and what roads exist are magical constructs. A good source for visualisations for parts of Glorantha is the Atlas Obscura website which has some amazing short articles and photography from across the world- which is a lot weirder than I normally think about. The book is excellent too- want to know what an underground cave temple might look like? https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/batu-caves gives you an example. The associated book is excellent. Thoroughly enjoying the much more detailed and well argued points made in this thread
  4. You may wish to get your players to read princeofsartar.com the online comic- in particular Argarth's initiation (chapter 1). I'm adapting an adventure from the Coming Storm for Runequest Glorantha and I've approached it from what roles are the PCs taking in the clan (and from that what cult). So I'm going for Hunter/ Yinkin, fisher/ Heler-Engizi the sky titan, a rattle born warrior (Orlanth or Vinga depending on gender), Healer/ Ernalda, herder- Orlanth. If a player wants to play a storm cold killer, then Humakt. I'd also follow Ian's advice- remember your PCs will have probably not gone far from the Tula. The characters won't have met the whole world, and so neither do the players or you know the whole world.
  5. In 13G book, page 14 describes the illustration of being Orlanth and his heroes. But the RQG cover is a re-work, and it's a useful point to make to new players, if you want to progress in your cult, you need to act like your god...
  6. The Uk's largest gaming convention (and 3rd or 4th largest worldwide) UK Expo is being held on 1st-3rd June in Birmingham. Currently there are 3 Heroquest and 2 Runequest games scheduled, which have now all sold out. Which is good news. Are any more GMs interested in running Glorantha games? (From a selfish perspective I have no games scheduled for Sunday...). There is still time to submit games to Expo and you'll get free entry to Expo for that day and Cult of Chaos credit. Anybody interested in running a 13th Age Glorantha game? It'll be good to raise the profile of Gloranthan gaming at this large event.
  7. For those of you interested in Heroquest across the world, there's an interview with Robin Mitra on the German language edition of Heroquest, which is supported by an additional book of 18 settings/ adventures and superb covers by French artist Eric Vanel. Original German interview at: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.teilzeithelden.de%2F2018%2F02%2F22%2Finterview-robin-mitra-und-das-deutsche-heroquest%2F&edit-text=&act=url ; rough and ready Google translate into English at: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.teilzeithelden.de%2F2018%2F02%2F22%2Finterview-robin-mitra-und-das-deutsche-heroquest%2F&edit-text=&act=url
  8. I'll be shameless there- at the moment there are 5 Glorantha games offered at UK Expo- 2 Runequest, 3 Heroquest and there are only spaces left in one game Heroquest Temple Heist: http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=RPG3908 Feel free to join me or even better offer some games on the Sunday so I can play...
  9. If you’re in Birmingham on Friday 1st June in the evening, feel free to come along to a Runequest session that I’m GM’ing. I’m adapting a scenario from the Eleven Lights Heroquest book, written by Ian Cooper for Runequest. Caught between the Lunar Empire and the Telmori (werewolves), you must fight for your Clan's survival in the Hero Wars. Adapting an adventure from Ian Cooper's Heroquest campaign, this Runequest adventure is suitable for old hands and newcomers alike to both Runequest and the world of Glorantha. 5 players max http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=RPG3953 Andrew
  10. Added to the UK Games Expo this very evening, Heroquest line editor Ian Cooper is running a new scenario set in Pamaltela- “The Noose” Bodies have been turning up strangled across Garguna, the largest city in Pamaltela. Notes scribbled on the walls, using the hieroglyphics of the sacred Garangrapha, by one or many murderers calling themselves ’The Noose' points to some apocalyptic cult stalking the streets. Whilst it was just the kadaam that were dying, few cared, but now a masarin has died and the city is on the edge. Everyone blames the Vadeli, and some have been beaten to death by angry mobsMasarin Abena has been tasked with stopping the murders by the jann of Garguna himself. As her household bodyguard, it falls to you to carry out her will: find and stop ‘The Noose’ before its too late! Now it is a race against time, find and stop the killers, before the city topples into violence. For 5 players max. http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=RPG3950 Andrew
  11. I will be running "Temple Heist" at the UK's biggest gaming convention UK Games Expo in Birmingham on Saturday 2 June in the afternoon. Description: You have been hired by a member of the Tarsh Exiles to rob the new Lunar Temple the night before before it opens. What could possibly go wrong?Newcomers to Glorantha or Heroquest (or both) are very welcome.System: Heroquest GloranthaFor 4 players max Book online at: http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=RPG3908 Heroquest line editor Ian Cooper is also running a Heroquest session, "the Night Watch" Once the Jonstown Night Watch was a noble institution--the good burghers of the town mustering to do their military service; the Night Watch protected their kith and kin against fire, theft, brigandry, and mayhem. To be called 'constable' was an honor, and watchmen took their office seriously. No longer.Since the Empire came, the Watch does little more than put on parades. The disinterested burghers of the town mostly pay a proxy to take their place; the proxies, a notorious bunch of drunks, fornicators and gamblers use their constabulary powers to shake down the local merchants, that is when they are not carousing the taverns. You are members of the Night Watch, the gods forbid your city ever actually needs you... http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=RPG3793 There is one space available for that game More Gloranthan games are possible for UK Games Expo but have not been announced yet. Andrew
  12. Kickstarter backer Fucklebutte Q Shitlord 's name is misspelt.
  13. Next Saturday, I'm looking to run a "work in progress" scenario for Heroquest at Spaghetti Conjunction, a small friendly convention held in Geek Retreat, Birmingham (details on G+, Facebook communities or at https://spaghetticonjunction.wordpress.com/2018/01/02/spaghetti-conjunction-2a/ ) Title: Temple Heist Description: You have been hired by a member of the Tarsh Exiles to rob the new Lunar Temple the night before before it opens. What could possibly go wrong? Newcomers to Glorantha or Heroquest (or both) are very welcome. System: Heroquest Glorantha For 4 players max Afternoon session
  14. Another source of ideas could be this Robin D Laws video from the Kraken- dream dragons get a mention...
  15. It’s a guess, so let’s not get too het up about timings until things are announced.
  16. I don’t know when the second quickstart will be releases. Chaosium are talking about a Q2 release for the core RQ books in print. They would be looking for physical copies by the summer convention cycle. Possibly free RPG day? But that’s my speculation,
  17. I’ve been running a playtest version of Runequest: Roleplaying in Glorantha at conventions since early summer, and if you liked playing the Quickstart, then its difficult to see how you won’t enjoy the released version of the game. A second quickstart will be produced to reflect feedback from the original quickstart with some rule changes. So even if you haven’t had a game under the full pre-release rules- and quite a few people have a copy and are running games, you have a good preview to assess the upcoming edition.
  18. Just a heads up that I’ll be running an all duck Runequest: Roleplaying in Glorantha session at Dragonmeet on 2 December 3-7 pm. Dragonmeet isn’t allowing pre-booking of any RPG that isn’t called Pathfinder, so you’ll need to book on the day. More details at https://www.dragonmeet.co.uk/gaming.html It appears its the only Glorantha game at the con- anybody else interested in offering a morning or evening game? Andrew
  19. Lovely character sheets. I'm using them at Grogmeet next Saturday. Andrew
  20. Not a clue- it'll be run on Roll20 or Google Hangouts.
  21. Aethercon- an online gaming convention has spaces available for a Runequest game- "the Dreaming Ruin" GM'ed by RQ line editor Jason Durall. 12 November 9AM EST to 2PM EST More details at: http://aethercon.com/ACEventMan/Tickets/index.asp More details of the convention and other events at: http://www.aethercon.com/news.asp I have no idea if this scenario will form part of the 2nd Runequest quickstart or not. Andrew
  22. Gianni Vacca has written up his Kraken experience, with contributions from others including me. Well worth a read with some news on upcoming Glorantha products. https://2ndage.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/the-kraken-2017-report.html?showComment=1509149725332#c5119860106138333359 Andrew
  23. RPGs are a bit of an afterthought, although the new home is better- So I understand, ironically I was in London for the day and couldn’t make it. Last year, everybody playing that I saw were adults, or at least older teenagers. I suspect the group were hungry and were not signed up to any social contract- like respecting the work put in by the GM or the other player. The GMs are mainly from the same Newport gaming group, so doing the con as an extended club night isn’t really the point. One sad thing, the Cardiff University Gaming Society had its first event of the year on the same day, rather than taking part in a wider gaming community. Students, eh? Finally, John the GM did a playtest of a Mythic Britain homebrew scenario last night- he will likely run the session at Spaghetti Conjunction. First melee combat- a fumble by the attacker vs a critical by the defender (100% v 01%). Joyous. Andrew
  24. I understand it was a bit of frustrating affair, after an hour 4 of the players decided to walk out on the other player & GM- both of whom I know. Shabby behaviour to a fine GM. If folks are going to Spaghetti Conjunction later this month in Birmingham, John will be running a homebrew Mythic Britain scenario, which I helped playtest this evening. Well worth your time. Andrew
