  1. i currently hold in my hands the pre publication proof edition i bought at gen con. it weighs in at 274 pages and is very cool. it does have 2 adventures in it one a mythic iceland one and the other a chtulhu dark ages one. i really enjoyed the chapter on runecarving it was pretty awsome. i think i will probably use a bit of herb lore from classic fantasy when i get my group to play it. i dont want to spoil anyones anticipation of it but since i am from the states and really have very limited knowledge of iceland i was very pleased with it. now i just have to get my regular group to finish our 2 year running deadlands reloaded game and mayby start this if you have reservations about buying it i will give you my opinion ........... buy it dont hesitate
  2. http://web.archive.org/web/200605021..._Conan_Eng.doc i downloaded this but starting on page 17 its all........ french i guess is a total english version available or have i done something wrong ?
  3. thanks for the reply i feel probably should have known that ....... but well what can i say sincerely heath
  4. quick question, where is the price for ammunition such as arrows, bolts etc. i tried searching through the pdf and cant find it. i even tried looking in the big golden book and cant find it in there either. thanks in advance for your time heath
  5. thanks that does answer the question. so in the version i have which is copyright 2009 and it does in fact list a colum for 1 handed and 2 handed weapons thanks for the quick reply but just to recap i spend seperatly for 1 handed swords from 2 handed swords correct? also how do weapon specialties work? do i add to my general weapon skill catagory (like swords) or do i have to start over (like great sword) so if i had a general sword skill at 25% and i wanted to specialize in long sword would i add points to long sword 25% + whatever points i want to add or 25% in swords and then i start at 0% in long sword and add however many skill points i want to it. also what would the benefits be to specialize in for example long sword over the general sword catagory? thanks in adnace for your help heath
  6. so can you purchase weapon class skills in classic fantasy for example to buy the weapon class skill "sword" does it start at 0 and purchase up where as if you bought "long sword it would start at the beginning skill level of 15%? or is that an option in BRP and not available in classic fantasy?
  7. im sorry if this has been answered somewhere else but i havnt been able to find it. i am very new to basic role playing and i figured i would start with classic fantasy. me and some of the people in my normal gaming group are in the process of making characters and we ran into a little snag. when on step seven page 12 it says to spend a characters personal skill points. well i am trying to figure out melee weapons. it says "as per weapon specialty" "see BRP page 69" when i look in BRP page 69 it says "see weapon classes page 257" it then talks about weapon skills and weapon classes. i am assuming that this means that if for example i look on page 253 of the BRP and i want to spend my personal skill points on a staff, quarter that it starts at 25% and i can add points on to that. now assuming i am right it also means that if i want to use a short staff later on in the game that i can at the quarter staff proficiency. correct? but if that is correct then how do i use weapon class skills? do i use the staff weapon class skill that starts at 0% proficiency and i add points as needed to build up? sorry i am a bit confused on this. this will probably apply to the skill for shield as well it starts as the base than i add points to it as well during creation? or is it a weapon class skill? thanks in advance for your time heath
  8. was wondering with sunday being the start of event registration if anyone from these forums were going to be running stuff at gen con this year. i saw a 1/2 dozen or so for "The Laundry" and there are always Call of Cthulhu but was wondering if any other settings were to be ran there?
  9. http://www.rpgnow.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=3118 I am not sure if this is what you were looking for but if it is the publisher is Fabled Enviroment. they make floorplans for usable for most games
  10. @ Narl checking through the links now thank you for the redirect i guess my search fu is weak tonight
  11. @Camillus ahh okay i misunderstood that part than thanks
  12. well i have talked a couple of my players into playing a one shot game of BRP. but i have a couple of questions. i believe i understand the basis of the system its simply percentage rolls with modifiers for situations. someone wants to climb a cliff face they make a climb roll and get under their skill chance. modifiers are for proper gear say +20% to skill roll its raining while you are attempting to climb -20% to skill roll and so on. combat - is simply one person rolls his weapon attack skill the other decides to parry or dodge and rolls his. if both succeed it goes to see who succeded the most is the winner. looking through the book i see that there are rules for the attack matrix like success versus fumble but at its basic it just adds more damage correct?
  13. thanks for the replies i really do like the edges and hindrances of savage worlds and i think ill definitly miss it. i also really enjoyd the spells and the trappings but im not sure it would work with BGB. im not sure i will be able to run a BRP game anytime soon as my current group is running with 8 to 9 people and to be honest i think that combat would take a very looong time as is but i may try to run it at my local gaming stores next game day just with less people.
  14. i have not actually ran a session using the rules yet but i ran some mock combat rounds to see how they flow and how it worked and it seems to be a very time consuming process. i have played in some call of cthulhu games but mostly convention games. i really like the way BGB uses experience as you use it and suceed to get better at it and how there are no levels. some back ground from me is that i am coming from running savage worlds for the past 3 or 4 years and before that palladium rpg's so forgive me if my questions or assumptions are wrong or misplaced. i realize that i should probably run some games or play some games with the rules as is but i have a constant itch to tinker with any game system i mess with. i apologize now for that. 1st question is about the hard cover BGB are they going to redo the pdf version of this so as to include the errata which from what i have read is included in the hardback BGB. (I hope i am using the BGB right and that its short for Big Golden Book) i am thinking of buying it from rpgnow but wanted to make sure it would include the errata. 2nd question i dont understand why have a weapon, parry, and dodge skill? why not use the weapon skill as a derived static defense target number. meaning that the attacker has to roll higher than this number to hit. for example hero1 has a short sword skill of 35% so to hit him villian 1 would have to roll a 35% or higher on percentile to hit. This is assuming that i read the rules correctly and that normally villian 1 would roll his weapon skill to attack and than hero 1 would roll his parry and the winner would be the one that had the greater level of succes. if im correct has anyone used this and is it feasible? 3rd question i really like the savage worlds way of a static number you roll against. im thinking of trying to adapt the combat system closer to that. for example the skill shield would add a plus to a characters derived static defense target number. the bigger the shield the higher the add to the static defense target number. what i am thinking for example, is that if a buckler adds 05% a round shield 15% etc to a static defense target number (see question 2 where i was using a weapon skill as the parry or a derived static defense target number) so if hero 1 was using a short sword and a small shield and had a weapon skill of 35% the buckler shield would add 05% so his defense skill total would be 40% and villian 1 and villian 2 attacked hero 1 the first attack would be against a target of 41% or higher and the second attack would be against a target of 11%. (this is considering i read the rules right and each additional attack versus a player is 30% less than the first one) if im correct on the rules it seems to me it would speed up combat greatly, has anyone tried this or something close to it? 4th question i see posts about runequest alot. what editions are compatable with the BGB or are close to it? thanks in advance for your time
  15. once you find the particular items stats, these look like they could be very fun to use with them. I use them with most of my fantasy savage worlds games. They are a form fillable pdf. You input the stats and name on the card and it has a picture on it of all kinds of stuff ranging from armor to weapons to bottles etc. I havnt talked my group into BRP quiet yet but im in the process so i thought these might be a nice add on for you. just thought you might find it useful. http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=88801
  16. http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?cPath=5621&products_id=82093 i dont know if this is the right place to post something or not but at rpgnow they are charging 2.00 for the quickstart rules. http://catalog.chaosium.com/product_info.php?products_id=3700 here it is free, i dont know if this is a oversight or if it has to do with the price of hosting something at rpgnow but most the other systems have their quickstart rules for free for example savage worlds, castle and crusades, cortex, shadowrun, world of darkness in their various worlds, im sure there are more those are just the first page. i know in other parts of this forum people are wondering why BRP is not as competitive as the others and there is a good case of you can just go to the chaosium site to DL it but most people when they are browsing around on the RPGNOW site they buy from there and usually dont go to another site as its all right there for them to download.
  17. @Jeffrywith1e i would say yes it has definitly died down in popularuty at least in the gaming stores i frequent
  18. first let me say i know virtually nothing about chaosium basic role playing, i have played call of cthulhu at variouse times here and there since the early 90's and thats as far as it goes. i recently picked up the chaosium basic role playing book from amazon and let me say i had mixed reviews about it. it is massive. i guess i should start out by first explaining my purpose here. i come from a background where i started out with palladium fantasy role playing. from there i went to d & d and ad&d. i switched to 7th sea and i played shadowrun 2nd and 3rd edition and finally 4th edition played lots of classic deadlands and of course old world of darkness and new world of darkness. 4 years ago i decided to try to create my own rpg as i was dissatisfied with what was available. i was looking for a game that was quick and easy to play ( i have 3 kids all in their teens atm but they have all played rpg's and for me it was important that they try it and as they were young it required a easy and simple game) not to mention my mind doesnt learn things as quick as it used to in my 20's. i also wanted a level less game preferably with merits/flaws or edges/hindrances. i didnt have much success probably due to my lack of patience. i was turned on to savage worlds. ive played faithfully for the last 3 years or so. its a great system for conventions and short campaigns but overall i dont like it for long term. i have also found, its probably for my incessive drive to perfection, that since it evolves around miniatures i have found a large portion of my creative juices being put towards the preparation of map tiles, miniatures prep and such, enough so that im frustrated by it and have been looking for another generic system. so that is where i am at present. i bought the big basic role playing book and i must say am very intimidated by it. it has so much info in it and to me it seems like it isnt organized very well. well let me rephrase it, it seems like everything from several settings books has been copy and pasted into it. please before you critizice me let me reiterate that i dont know much about this system but since this thread is on why the system is un popular i would share my first hand experience. to me it seemed that anything that for example had to do with spells and casting was all put into the magic system. what i mean by this is that it has tons of options and information but at some places it doesnt blend in with the other info so it seemed to me that it was cut and pasted from other info and put into there. its not that it isnt good info it just to me seemed a little ....flavorless or it didnt quiet fit in with it all. when i pick up a book i usually have done some research and gotten a little background about it before i plunk down the cash. i did the same with this book and got mixed reviews as i would expect. on this board and from die hard chaosium fans it was the greatest thing since pb and jelly. i bought it anyway and after browsing through it am very intimidated. i kind of expected it to be laid out similiar to savage worlds and was a bit over whelmed by all the info. i put it down and havnt touched it for the last couple weeks but i decided to try it out so i recently bought classic fantasy for brp, am waiting to get it in the mail but i figure that its a fair way to try the system out. im not trying to say that savage worlds was a better system but i am saying that it seemd to be put together easier for me to understand. i generally dont post things on forums criticising a system without first having a solution for the particular problem. so the solution im suggesting is if it was organized a little better that it would not be so intimidating for people to pick up. im in indianapolis indiana and we have 6 local gaming stores within 20 minutes here that i know of and not a single one had the chaosium basic role playing game book. most of them said they could order it but the only chaosium product that only 2 of them had was call of cthulhu. im really looking forward to trying the classic role playing book out and ill try to let yall know my thoughts about the format and book itself perphaps here or in the appropriate forum section. at the moment pathfinder is so big that at a local gaming convention that had 12 pages of events (30+ events were all pathfinder). savage worlds was not even on there and there were only 3 call of cthulhu games. 2 years ago if i hosted a savage worlds game i had a full table (10 to 12 people) and was turning people away, but in the last 6 mnths i can barely get 3 or 4 people for a savage worlds game. so i dont believe that all of the problems with brp popularity is due to the format of books etc, as other people have posted alot has to do with public popularity and at the moment pathfinder is king sincerely heath delashmit ps i hope noone takes this the wrong way i am only trying to give my first impression of the brp book, to attempt to perphaps see why its not so big as other systems.
  19. i guess what i was getting at was Is MRQII Basically a BRP setting book with different switches turned on?
  20. I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this but when reading through here i see Runequest mentioned several time so here goes. How similiar is the new RuneQuest II from Mongoose to BRP? Is it a version of BRP or a completely different critter. I guess what I am getting at is Would i be better off getting BRP or Mongoose Rune Quest II, when it comes to Fantasy Role Playing. I have been playing Savage Worlds for quiet some time now and I'm looking into something different for awhile. I fondly remember Call of Cthulhu, (it was 2nd edition if i remember correctly) and I really like the idea of BRP's advance system instead of levels or experience, by using the skill you may be able to raise it. I dont own either of the 2 but am looking into buying one of them as a Christmas gift for myself. I appreciate your replies and if this is the wrong place to ask about it once again i apologize.
