Awesome news!  Just in time for my return from holiday.

Oh and @Dragonsnail when you say Red Cow books do you mean Coming Storm and Eleven Lights?

Yes, correct. I'd throw money on a RQG addon for those books.

Edit: Another issue with older material is the different time setting in RQG, which is a few years forward. Coming Storm and Eleven Lights cover 1618-1625, whereas RQG is 1625+

I'm getting into planning for my RuneQuest campaign and starting to think about scenarios. Will the next PDF have an adventure in it? And if so how far out is that release?

It is fairly easy to use older material, even from Heroquest. What will take time is creating enemy stats suited for RQG. But with the bestiary and rulebook it is doable. Can even use the Mythras enemy generator with some modding afterwards.

In my opinion the two Red Cow books for Heroquest are the best material produced for Glorantha. They are fantastic.

I've verified and notified Q Workshop about the glitch.

It slipped through approvals in a very confusing email chain discussing multiple issues.

They only printed a small number for the conventions and immediate mail order, so as soon as they make more, general distribution will have corrected dice.

To check in the future, just count the Abdomen sides... there should be three.

If you have the incorrect dice, a simple workaround is that any time a roll of Left Leg comes up, roll a d10 and divide by 2. If the end result is a 5, it should be treated as Abdomen

    ++++++++

In other news, we have discussed the possibility for non-humanoid hit location dice, but the problem of identifying which one belongs to which remains a challenge of readability, and you'd be shooting for an increasingly small number of uses, given the wide variety of hit location configurations.

I saw they had removed them from their shop for now. Now those misprinted dice will become collector items! Or maybe not. Perhaps they can be used for Broo with one extra large leg mutation.

Will wait for them to put up the fixed set.

You might want to consider holding off on ordering the expansion dice. I picked up two sets at Gen Con and the hit location die does not match with the hit location table. The die has an extra left leg hit with five chances, and is missing an abdomen hit with only two.

An unfortunate mistake, but otherwise, they look great!

    Oh, thanks for the information.

The Q Workshop ones are nice. They are a weird density plastic...seems fine but really lightweight. The hit location die is larger than my two Koplow d30s and it's much lighter. It actually rolls far less biased than my old garbage one that only gives results of RIGHT LEG and TORSO, though.

Thanks for the update, looking forward to be able to buy them.

Did you salt water test the balance? :)

On a slow boat from  China, literally!

Not wanting to go into a political discussion, but are there any chances the trade war with China could affect future prices? As I understand it is for specific goods, so books are not affected I guess?

That sword is both a blessing and a curse, because Humakt will expect it to be used for its intended purpose. If it isn't used, or is lost, the consequences could be serious (the most extreme, being for the character to give an account of themselves in Humakt's Hall - which means they'd be... dead).

Powerful swords often taken on a life of their own, and frequently bring doom upon their wielder. Whilst it isn't mentioned in the rules, it is also possible that there is a physical effect when the sword is in the presence of its intended victims (perhaps it starts to glow or hum), and possibly even a spiritual effect, as a troll shaman tied to the Death Rune might be aware of its nearby presence.

After racking up a few troll kills, I'm pretty sure the character might get some attention from nearby trolls. Even with 115% skill, after a few attacks, that last one Great Troll 2H maul attack will be -60% to parry.

Is the RQ:G character sheet available as a free download on the Chaosium web site? I've found it on drivethrurpg.

Perhaps in the future when things settle down a bit, Chaosium could create a "Free Runequest resources" entry on the Runequest menu and add things there like the quickstart and sheets, and excerpts from the books. I don''t know if it would be usable, just a thought I got.

I would follow the skills times noted on p.139.  Let's say I want to augment my Bargain with (Human)Insight.  The 1-5 minute timeframe is what would apply and it would be limited to the duration of the bargaining.  However, if I use my Cult Lore(Ty Kora Tek) to augment my Prepare Corpse skill, I would allow it to apply through the whole time necessary to complete that preparation whether a day or several days.  It would still be limited to the Prepare Corpse skill.

If it was a successful roll, I would apply an experience check.

Both Passion and Runic inspiration had a -10% penalty on failure in the Quickstart.  Presumably they were both supposed to be bumped to -20% for consistency with skill augment failure.

I agree with you, good reasoning. Thanks for the info about the Quickstart. I just skimmed it knowing that our group was going to be busy until the full release later.

Jason has just recently closed the window on 1st-printing "Tribal Edit" errorchecks.  He will be correcting the galleys (no ETA), otherwise finalizing the print run (no ETA), getting it printed (no ETA), getting it shipped (no ETA), getting it through various Customs / border / Excise / etc (no ETA), and getting it transshipped to their distribution partners (no ETA).  Note the MOST of these steps are mostly or entirely outside Chaosium control ...

You may notice a theme.  Chaosium hasn't announced an ETA.  And frankly, given how many steps remain that can reasonably produce delays outside their control... any date they DID give would be just BEGGING for Murphy to stop in with an enforcement action on His law ...

It's not black magic to print and ship books, even if logistics require a lot of work. When we get a "has gone to print" from Chaosium we can also estimate a delivery time for shipping over sea. Sure people are eager to get books, but I find that is normal for fans.

  11. In general, I am not a big fan of using small exceptions to create individual rules for three different ways to augment. Instead of keeping one ruleset for augmenting, there are three - which has rules in four different chapters for some reason.

    Game system chapter

The text at page 144 is trying to describe it in general but in fact the table with results is only usable for augmenting with Skills. This section should be cut a lot, with only very basic descriptions on how it works. Then referring to the separate chapters for full rules.

    Skills chapter

On page 163 we have the rules for augmenting with skills. First a very minor issue, the header “Augmenting Skills” is one step to small.

Second issue is that the section is to short. It assumes some rules from page 144 are used as a base for augmenting with skills. Both runes and passions used for augmenting are fully detailed in their respective chapter. As an example, it doesn’t state you cannot use skills several times for augmenting here. It is assumed to be known for the game system chapter. Whereas runes chapter repeats the rule.

Third issue is the example in italics. It uses the movement rune for augmenting, not a skill. Which of course is a bad example as rune augmenting uses slightly different rules.

Next issue is that skills do not have an explanation on duration. The other two have this detailed in their respective chapters, for example runes stating that it works for the duration of a combat or battle.

Last issue is that it doesn’t explain if you get an experience check for successfully using a skill to augment another ability. For rune and passions this is explained in the rules. I can assume you do not get an experience check, but it would be better if it stated so in the rules specifically as we are working with exception based rules here.

    Rune and passions chapters

No big issues here, rules are detailed and seemingly complete. If anything, why are a failed result on passions giving a -10% on further rolls on that passion, while runes get a -20% on a failed attempt? Skills get -20% on the ability you are augmenting instead. Seems like a typo. If not, it is again creating micro exceptions which are unnecessary.

For the record there is a Character Sheet for RQG on Roll20 which does have some automated functions included including the ability to roll fumbles. This has been done by a member of the community and is a work in progress but it has pretty much all the elements you need to play a Human character, and can store all of the information from the character sheet.

Roll20 is sensitive to the amount of play a system gets, and will support a game accordingly. At present all forms of RuneQuest account for less than half a percent of the games played in a Quarter, so RuneQuest is not on their radar, which seems fair to me to be honest. As Roll20 is free to use, perhaps more of the community could give it a try and raise its profile.

I created an account and started fooling around a bit. Looks good.

For me the Quickstart sheet was default, so had to switch it to the full one in settings.

Detect spells have always been instant.  The objects detected light up magically, you see them, and the glow fades off.

So how long does the detected objects glow ? Fifteen minutes? One melee round? Five melee rounds? It doesn't say as far as I can see. If it is instant as the spell, then it would be just a flash on/off and you would not be able to see any glow and not anything except for the direction you looked.

A carryover from RQ2.  In that edition p.36 "Spells affecting the character’s body do not require a focus." while "spells affecting other people and objects do require a focus for quick casting."

I really wish there was no "carry overs", I don't like having to reference RQ2 to be able to guess the meaning RQG rules. Like when the term "Focused" is not explained in the RQG book. Also as I said earlier with the new all encompassing Focus rules I think they should just cut it out if it is as you guess. Detect spells would be "Ranged, Instant, N/A".

  14. 23 minutes ago, PhilHibbs said:

Except when they don't, as per the quote, which is also stated on p255.

    Correct.

But I think"Requires focus" would be clearer in that case. And it also would create fairly unnecessary exceptions to the otherwise encompassing Focus rules. No, I think there is something else than that.

Examining further, Detect Magic has the description "objects glow visibly to everyone within sight". I still think it should be "Active" and perhaps also have "Temporal" instead of "Instant". Which sets a time limit to the Detect spells, but you also has to concentrate on it to keep it "Active". If detect magic is Instant and not Active, how long does the effect last?

  15. 28 minutes ago, PhilHibbs said:

I wonder if it's supposed to mean that the spell can't be cast without a focus, in the way some spells can:

No, I don't think that is the case. All Spirit Magic spells require a focus as per p254.

Not sure about the keyword though, could be a remnant of something earlier as you said before. At the very least they are typed in wrong order.

Now that I am talking about them, I also noticed several spells only have two keywords. For example Binding Enchantment has "Ritual (Enchantment), Passive" and Sleep has "Ranged, Temporal". I would much rather have them typed with a "N/A, Ritual (Enchantment), Passive" if a keyword isn't applicable. When I expect three keywords but get two, I have to use logic to understand which ones I got. It is of course easy in most cases.

  16. While reading the Spirit Magic chapter, and also the Magic chapter the Detect spells list "Ranged, Focused, Instant" (corresponding to Casting Range, Duration, Spell Type). First thing the last two keywords are switched. But then I could not find details on "Focused". I believe it should be "Active" as per p247 "Types of Spells".

So shouldn't the Detect spells should be "Ranged, Instant, Active"? I have the 90,6MB PDF rule book.

No rolled maps will be produced by Chaosium- shipping costs to blame

Thanks for the great summary which I just quoted one line from above.

Regarding the maps, I understand selling maps are not financially viable. I hope we can get PDF companion books like the "Sartar Campaign Pack" PDF for HeroQuest. That PDF just contains the maps in high resolution, making it easier to fix prints of maps for private use. Maps in most PDF books are often compressed to much and get jpeg distorted text and details not suitable for printing. But the separate book with maps only have much higher resolution maps, and is suitable for printing.

As an example, the new Dragon Pass map in the RQG book looks great, it's just to low resolution to print in large size with good quality.

I doubt you will notice the quality difference at all.  You will notice how much faster you can page through it.  Especially on a table device or something like a net book.

That is not correct unless with very old equipment. I have the original PDF on my Ipad which is an old model (3-4 years). It is very quick, no issues. Using Adobe Reader app.

I didn't see any immediate difference in quality.

Those services lower the quality of images in the PDF by compressing them harder. That is how they make a smaller PDF file. Personally I don't see the need to lower the size with today's huge storage capacities and fast processors. But if you are happy with the PDF, I'm fine with that - I just reacted from my personal preference.
