  1. So I ordered 2 copies of the books from RPG meetings with the cards, took about 4 weeks to arrive The book seems remarkably dense, I have books with twice the page count which weigh less. Not a complaint, just surprising. Looking forward to the read, my 12 year old daughter has claimed my second copy to read as well
  2. Yea the best way to end up with a million dollars in the RPG industry is to start out with 2 million
  3. But if i want to play basic D&D Id just bust out with the Rules Cyclopedia, and actually play it BECMI was so much fun
  4. This is why I was considering doing a Lets read, review of it. That and I'm curious just how different from RQ6 it really is.
  5. sounds awesome How did you convert the magic system over?
  6. magic world does not use hit locations, it can (optional) but its not the default
  7. consider Magic world at 276 PDF pages, and Runequest 6 at 458 Both are excellent at what they do, but RQ6 is more rule intensive. I'm considering doing a Lets read Magic World starting in July If you pick runequest 6, Best RQ6 Sheet evar
  8. Well I did do a lets read Let-s-Read-RuneQuest-6-by-The-Design-Mechanism
  9. Personally I use Maptools, while it is challenging to learn at first, once you get the hang of it, its awesome It has some of the best Fog Of War, and Line of Sight effects available. You can also make your own mapss using it frameworks Legend-Runequest Check the screenshot a little down the page
  10. Picked up a copy at my FLGS... When I first started ordering books, they only had the one copy of call of cthulu stuck on a back shelf with the other low volume stock. Seems they now carry the BGB in quantity, as well as CoC and various supplements. The games have a shelf 8 books wide in prominent placement with the warhammer 40k and shadowrun lines. (warhammer minis are huge at this store so the placement matters) Just wish Magic World was bits and mortar so I could get the PDF at a more reasonable cost.
  11. both options are equally vaild depending on who is the attacker/defender Cinematically speaking you see both cases often in movies and books thematically speaking, in a true life or death fight, most people would parry, and think it was thier awesome parry that caused such a horrible miss logically RQ6 encourages the parry since if you successfully parry a missed attack you get 1 special effect, and depending on your success, may get 2 effects which include compless surrender, disarm opponent, injury damage weapon, entangle, and many other possible effects Being defensive does not mean losing all offensive capability
  12. Well in RQ6, you can parry an attack which missed, which greatly increases your change for getting defensive special effects, which offer a decided advantage
  13. I'm not advocating that you ignore every strike and pray armor holds, but there are situations where a player should be willing to risk the damage in order to get his strike through. I checked the rules, there is nothing that says you absolutely must parry, or attempt to parry every attack I can foresee where a player with superior initiative will hold action in order to attempt a simultaneous strike, knowing he may well die in the action, self sacrifice for the greater goal and all..
  14. you know i didnt even check before posting.. ill have to rectify that
  15. Well you are neglecting to consider one of the options, you are not required to oppose your opponents roll, he can roll his attack, you can roll yours, no dodge, no parry Just faith in the gods an your armor...
  16. RuneQuest 6 Combat considers a number of options 1) Your Combat Style, which is the skill for wielding the weapons you know. 2) The Combat Round is Five seconds. 3) Combat Actions (Proactive and Reactive actions costing an action point, attack, parry, move etc) 4) Weapon Size and Reach (Both are important as they define how difficult it is to parry a particular weapon, or the range needed to engage. 5) Engagement Combatants can hit or be hit by a direct opponent, depending on circumstances. (Melee or Ranged engagement differs) 6) Special Effects are combat maneuvers which can be performed if one combatant gains the upper hand. (determined after the roll) Other factors to consider are a. Initiative is rolled at the beginning of a fight, and does not change unless something major changes (reinforcments arrive etc) b. Strike Rank is affected by armor, heavier armors slow you down c. Evade is a leap out of the way and leaves you prone (Dodge does not exist in RQ6, the word is not to be found in the PDF at all) d. Parry is defined as attempt to deflect an incoming attack using a combination of parrying, blocking, leaning and footwork to stop the blow. (so in this case, the swift turn to the side to cause a strike to miss is part of the PARRY action, its not limited to just using the weapon, its a MIX) e. Weapon/Shield Size matters Weapon sizes are Small, Medium, Large, Huge, Enormous Parrying equal sized attacks (sword vs sword, dagger vs dagger) allows full block Parrys with a 1 step smaller, blocks half the damage Trying to Parry with 2 steps smaller is futile, you dont parry a claymore with a dagger f. Shields are awesome for blocking because of this, Buckler is considerd medium size. A heater shield/Viking shield etc is considered large. Hoplite Shields or a Kite shield is considered Huge for parry purposes. (THIS makes shields Awesome considering most 1 handed weapons are small or medium, and most 2 handed weapons are large, with a few being huge) (flexible weapons like a flail treat shields as 1 size smaller for consideration) g. Shields also are the only way you can parry incoming missile attacks, other wise your only option is EVADE, or be a sitting duck As for how the timing of actions happen, strike ranks are essential Initiative: The order of who acts when during a Cycle of a Combat Round Cycle: The countdown through Initiative values from the highest Strike Rank to the lowest, so that each participant has a chance to take their Turn when their Strike Rank is reached.(this seems to indicate that strike rank does determine when in the cycle your actions occur) Turn: Upon each turn, participants perform a Combat Action, which comprises of a declaration, any necessary dice rolls (including reactions) and the resolution of the action. Neat things about parry, if your opponent goes first (or you allow him to go first because you know he is of lesser skill) and he misses, then you can parry his missed attack in hopes of getting some defensive special effects Also If you are unwilling or unable to parry an incoming attack, it is considerd the same as having rolled a failure for their chance at a special effect (OUCH) There are tons more, I dont know BRP well, but RQ6 covers a lot of territory, Hope this contributes

  21. Pathfinder certainly didn't start off as a major player, they built their company proving others were doing it wrong. Adventure paths giving pre-published campaigns for GM's, there are still many companies who view modules as a money loser. For most this is true, for Paizo, well written/planned modules are a cash cow. I don't play pathfinder, yet I subscribe to the AP line. They saw a market for continuing the 3.5 game line, and they have effectively forced WOTC into abandoning 4th ED and developing 5th ed, because if they don't, they can, and will lose their entire market. Paizo is based of strong writing, excellent production values, interaction with their fans. Even if 5th ed is a strong game, WOTC's customer service is garbage, the interaction is minimal, the production values have been slipping (see editing/errata)
  22. As a newcomer to the BRQ/RQ lines, I found out BRP existed through RPG.net. Having read BRP and RQ6 at this point I am probably going with RQ6 as a more coherent integrated system. BRP strikes me as a hodge podge of different rule sets, which is largely what it is. Half the threads here refer to books which havent seen print since the 80's, its all very confusing. It needs a complete work over into a far more integrated rules set. Currently it strikes me as very similar to a Palladium copy/paste creation. My preferred store actually stocks multiple CoC products, and even has 1 copy of BRB on the shelf which they reorder after it sells. They stock legend, have several copies of RQ6 on order, and try to support many indie games. Currently they have over 15 copies of the new Savage worlds book on the shelf, for $10 its hard to compete and you can do most of what BRP does. If it wasn't so light it may have been my chosen system.
  23. I've never really been interested in the Elric books, I never saw what people found so interesting about them, I may look at it first down the line, if my FLGS carries it, but in this case, a polished turd, is still a turd
