One thing I didn't find anything, in fact it's absent from the rulesbook, is what happens with a stunned character... anyone???

Rules for Stunning are p113. What it doesn't state is the duration of the stun. My assumption they are knocked out (as stated in the rules) for the rest of the combat scene. I would also rule that they can be revived before then, by a fellow party member, on a successful 1st Aid skill test.

  2. Overnight while I was sleeping, Dr Mitch turned in his edits for OpenQuest Dungeons. Just over 100 pages of advice on how to use OpenQuest as an exit ramp from DnD into D100 gaming, with three adventures to back it up. Onwards to layout! Pdfs to backers when it's all nicely done, and a pre-order for non-backers will follow.

  3. Not for the whole region, but I've got 100+ pages of a sourcebook I've written around the land of Karia in the Eastern Wilds, which touches on the surrounding lands of Delela, Naskorion and Halikiv. Its got its origins in a RQ III campaign I ran during the best part of the 90s, which I've periodically updated. I'm planning on doing one more update to bring it in line with RQ G and then making it available via the Jonstown Compendium.

I'll be writing about its progress over on my Gloranthan fan blog Arkat's Playground

  4. Slowly getting back into the swing of things as the Summer holidays begin to fade, and some important family stuff is finally being resolved.

OpenQuest Dungeons is with Dr Mitch for proofing, and I’m working on getting the SimpleQuest supplements (essentially OQ books, too 🙂 ) done.

SimpleQuest now has a release page here, so you can see where I’m up to with it as a game line.

  5. Darkvale is going to be an official setting for SimpleQuest

Summon Otherworld Creature (SimpleQuest p99) deals with Summoning Demons.  Demons of Dark Desire will give more detail on the subject of Demons and their summoning.

  6. After the success of last year’s online OpenQuest convention a year on, I’ve decided to do it again.

The schedule is being worked on and will be announced shortly, but register now to attend.

    Things planned

    • Games of SimpleQuest, our concise version of OpenQuest, optimised for convention games.
    • Year of the Four Emperors, join Dr Mitch for another outing of his historical fantasy game.
    • Skyraiders of the Floating Realms. Get your inner Sky Pirate on and take to the Infinite Sky in this swashbuckling standalone game, coming later this year.
    • Saturday Night Roundtable. Join Dr Mitch and me in our room of Zoom for a catch-up on all things OpenQuest.

Hi! I just bought the 3ed of OpenQuest. I like the layout and it feels a polished system. I think it has just become my favorite d100 implementation.

Awesome! That's something I always like to hear 🙂

I'm just a little weary about how the 100% cap in skills may work in-game.

Don't be. I've used the rules as written to successfully manage a couple of players who have hit 100% in the skill areas they have chosen to focus on putting their growth points into after 40 sessions of play. It could probably do with some explanation and a blog post about my experiences at openquestrpg at some point.

I'm planning to adapt River of Heaven to these new rules. Are there any conflicting rules to watch out?

I've got a document where I'm working on a revised 2nd edition of River of Heaven. It be put to one side while I work on Blasters and Lasers (which is a much more straightforward Sci-fi game), which will probably feed back into River of Heaven 2nd. But the main areas are take the professions and give values to the suggested skills, strip out the complexity of the guns rules, and augmentations are going to be revised so they are more like the one magic system in the OpenQuest companion - with counting of Bio Energy points.

  8. SimpleQuest is a concise and straightforward D100 system, easy to play yet filled with all the tense excitement and storytelling potential associated with percentile systems.

It is a concise and compact version of OpenQuest, with a few extra rules to make it more pickup and play.

    • Compact for travelling and viewing on phones/tablets
    • Concise for straightforward fantasy games, one-shots and short campaigns.

This hardcover book weighs in at just over 150 pages, in 6×9 inch format, with full-colour illustrations by Jeshields and a gorgeous wrap round cover by Jon Hodgson.

This book contains the following chapters.

    • Characters. Use either a points allocation or a random system to generate characters who are motivated and capable of going on fantastic and
      thrilling adventures.
    • Equipment. This chapter deals with the tools of the adventuring trade. Weapons, armour and general gear such as rope, backpacks and transport costs.
    • Rules. This chapter explains the system’s workhorse, the D100 Skill Test, in its basic and opposed versions. There is also a section of spot rules for common situations that may arise during the game.
    • Spot Rules for common adventuring situations.Combat. This subset of the rules looks at what happens when blades are drawn and used in anger.
    • Magic. This chapter details a single magic system that every player character uses.
    • Creatures. Monsters and animals to populate your adventures.
    • Gods and Goddesses. To use either as patrons or religions to join.
    • Appendix: Life Events. An optional rule that gives player characters quick one-line backgrounds.

Note I’m currently selling the nicely digitally printed copies leftover from the Kickstarter. It has sewn pages, a ribbon, printed endpapers and a short introductory adventure (“The Well”).

You can ask @Newt directly, but it seems obvious to me that he was referring to the Basic Roleplaying booklet from 1981

Wrong! It was the rules section of Call of Cthulhu ,  part of the Games Workshop hardcover edition (which I think is popularly called 3rd edition) that I bought in 1986ish.

Look here I am with my copy!

  10. At 9 pm (GMT), The SimpleQuest Kickstarter will be over. You will miss your chance to not only get the main rulebook in nicely printed format if you want but four other supplements. Also, you won't get to see Santa fight Krampus

  11. Ok we are well and truly funded and into the second week of the campaign.

    Quick recap.

The main rule book funded in under an hour. Working on that now so it should be available in pdf/POD shortly after the campaign ends, and not long after in printed form for a dedicated printer.

Darkvale is now going to be available as both pdf AND Print on Demand, for all backers.

We are currently very close to funding the early bird gift, Demons of Dark Desire, as POD in addition to pdf as a freebie for Early Backers, and as an add-on for people who missed that two days of bonkers funding.

After that there's a fun 80s Action Film meets Christmas themed horror adventure called "Don't Let the Krampus Grind You Down". Already written I had fun playing this last year online over the festive period 😄

As well as the currently inprint OpenQuest rulebook and scenarios as add-ons, I've also added River of Heaven + To the Stars and the OpenQuest Classics (the out of print Crucible of Dragons + The Savage North + The Company RPG)  as  low cost pod/pdf bundles at £10 each.

Dwarfs are stated to have 2D6+12 DEX and 3D6 CON. Shouldn't that be the other way round?

SimpleQuest Dwarfs play against type. They are fast and furious, and win sprinting races with alarming regularity...oh frap you caught a mistake! Fixing it in the draft now 🙂

    Thank you 🙂

  13. Update on the campaign.

After two days everything was funded, including stretch goals. So I threw up three new stretch goals.

Here's the update I posted about that.

This morning, another Stretch Goal was funded  taking us up to a total of FIVE funded. Now the Darkvale setting and collection of adventures, that funded in the first two days, will be available to all backers as Print on Demand(POD) as well as PDF.
