I've haven't heard of him in ages. I just hope he is well.

I had the pleasure of spending some time with him at Furnace convention weekend at the start of last October. He was in very fine shape, and good humour 🙂

  2.

We'll the Kickstarter has been live for just under 12 hours , and we've funded the main goal, and three stretch goals 🙂

One thing, I've extended the Early Bird Backer levels so they are available for the first two days of the campaign.

  3. SimpleQuest, for those of you with long memories, was the inital name for OpenQuest. Over three editions OQ has out grown my original concept of a short D100 Fantasy game. So last summer I returned to this original concept and quickly threw this concise complete D100 Fantasy game in full-colour hardcover, 150 pages long.

Made with OpenQuest, with some new rules to make it more pick up and play, for when you want to run a short campaign or a one-shot convention game.  Here's more details on a blog post on OpenQuestRPG.com

Coming to Kickstarter next week Monday 28th November for two weeks.

Here's a detail from Jon Hodgson's gorgeous wrapround cover, last seen gracing OpenQuest 2.

  4. OpenQuest Online is a two-day convention dedicated to the OpenQuest RPG system and spin-off games, such as River of Heaven. As well as games, there will be talks given online via Zoom.

Details are currently being worked on. Check back in the coming weeks.

    Things that are planned:

    • A game or two from Paul Mitchener (author of Liminal, Age of Arthur and co-author of Crucible of the Dragons).
    • Rise and Shrine. Come learn with OpenQuest, with two-hour taster sessions in the mornings.
    • Online talks about the game.

More information and links to register on the following blog post over at openquestrpg.com

  5. Hi all

I'm just putting the finishing touches on the latest OpenQuest adventure, Catching the Wrym.

This 28-page adventure is a full standalone adventure that can be played in one or two four hour gaming sessions. It can be played as the final part of an introductory scenario arc, that starts with The Road Less Travelled (OpenQuest Main Rulebook), and continues with The Lost Outpost (the OpenQuest Quickstart).

Read more about this upcoming release in this blog post.

Here's the cover by Jon Hodgson.

    • Tiny little 160px thumbs don't seem likely to negatively-impact the artist in question

Unfortunately from my experience with working with artists* who have had their work used without permission, it does cause a very large amount of emotional upset to the artist who sees their copyrights violated. Its not something they can easily brush off, and its something they have to actively pursue take down.

Taking down the offending image, even if it a thumbnail, is the right thing to do and greatly restores their peace of mind.

*including Jon, who unfortunately has many tales of people quite frankly taking the piss over the rights of his work.

I am starting a translation of Legend Core Rulebook to brazilian portuguese. If covers are fake i can not trust the content. I will use official one.

You should also probably tell Jon where you found them. He regularly chases up people who use his art without permission.

  8. OpenQuest 3rd edition has been a big success. I want to continue to support the game, past this year's road map of releases, so it's time to invite budding OpenQuest writers to contribute.

We've got history with this. The Savage North was co-written by John Ossoway, the lead author of River of Heaven, our D100 Sci-fi game. Rik Kershaw-Moore co-wrote the Company, and Simon Bray and Paul Mitchener co-wrote Crucible of Dragons. Paul is also writing the upcoming The Clockwork Palace adventure and Four Emperors historical/fantasy OpenQuest powered game.

This is all paid work, and rates will be discussed privately and depend upon the scope of the piece.

I'm considering new ideas from writers and have several projects in mind that need writers to contribute to.

So if you are interested, drop me a line at newt@d101games.com.

  9. That's pretty much what I did in OQ2, with some optional rules for "specialists". Here's the relevant text.

    Quote

    Specialists (Optional)
The standard character generation rules create  characters that are Jacks of all Trades, having both reasonable weapon skills and some magic. What if you want to generate a character that is more of a magician or more of a warrior?

    If this is the case use the following rules;
Warriors: Allocate 75 points on weapon skills (instead of the usual 50), with an increased limit of 50 points on any one weapon skill, and allocate 2 points of magnitude on Battle Magic.
Magicians: Allocate 30 points on weapon skills and allocate 9 points of magnitude on Battle Magic spells. If you are allowing characters to start with either Sorcery or Divine magic these 9 points can also be spent on the appropriate Sorcery or Divine spells. The relevant casting skill, Battle
Magic Casting for Battle Magic starts at POW X4.

Its still there in OQ3 but I use Ready Made Concepts (main rule book pages 27-29) to express it, its a lot tidier.

  10. Yup that is the case, and yes it does make it a powerful spell that effectively makes it as you point out a magic resistance spell, which also allows the target to cast back spells flung at them (but using their own Magic casting skill). The only limiter being that they can only have one spell absorbed at a time.

If you wanted to make it slightly less powerful, insist upon the target rolling their Magic Casting to absorb the spell. So a magician casting it on them may have a high casting skill, the warrior it is cast on, less so making the magic resistance effectively only as powerful as the target's casting skill.

  11. Hi Sesan

Your game sounds terrific. Not one I would have done myself, since being a Dad with two children the whole Family Horror subgenre scares too much for me to find it entertaining. I won't even watch the current crop of films! 🙂

I've given it a quick shout out on both my twitter accounts (@newtus and @d101games), a blog post on openquestrpg.com (link below) and a mention on the 3rd Party publisher page of openquesrpg.com, as a game coming soon. When the Kickstarter is up and going I'll give it more shout outs 🙂

  12. A small update to the SRD this weekend, as it moves from version 1. to version 1.1. to include the skill bases in the character and skill sections of the SRD, which were left out in error in the initial release.

I've also updated the 3rd Party publisher's page on openquestrpg.com, so not only has it got links to the SRD, contact details for support, but also a list of published projects and currently empty section (ready to be filled) of projects in ACTIVE development.
