  1. Wow, that's really too bad. I was looking forward to picking these up but if those pictures are any indication, it doesn't look worth the inflated price. Thanks for the link!
  2. Don't know if this has already been posted, but the First Edition reissues of Dungeons and Dragons have just been released. They look pretty sweet and definitely bring back some fond memories. Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Product (1st Edition Premium Player's Handbook) http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndacc/02400000 http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndacc/02390000
  3. There haven't been too many votes (138 when I checked out the link) but still a little surprising. From what I see, the vast majority of gamers play D20 based games (at least in my experience). I hate the system myself but for number crunchers and power-gamers, i do see the appeal.
  4. Just thought I'd let you know that I finally got my print version of Classic Fantasy and I have to say, hats off to you mate. It's an awesome supplement that I can't wait to sink my teeth into. It's distilled all my nostalgia and earliest RPG memories of AD&D into one volume with my favourite system. Now I eagerly await those new books!
  5. Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I definitely agree with the above. I'm having a great time with the solo campaign so far. With Call of Cthulhu (Dark Ages), I'm finding it really heightens the tension. The player is truly on his own, to fend for himself and as such, has to be more resourceful. It does time a considerable about more effort on my part as GM but the amount of detail and the depth of the story is really appealing. I'm having a much deeper experience with solo campaigning so far than in a year and half's worth of "power gaming", which used to be reduced to who had the bigger gun and the most damage capacity.
  6. It's available now in print form from Chaosium. Copy ordered and waiting!
  7. Start looking at some page-scans of this one...started drooling! Very cool looking book!
  8. Thanks for the Head's Up! I'm in Montreal too and haven't been to Valet d'Coeur in ages! Sounds like time to head down that way again!
  9. So I know Michael Moonrock is a sci-fi writer, but what exactly is Stormbringer? I've seen some used copies online for decent prices but I can't find a ton of good info on it. Is it a sci-fi setting, fantasy? It seems to also be out of print. Thanks in advance!
  10. So I've been a lurker for a while now but finally registered for the boards. I used to love roleplaying back in high school/college, but my old RPG group ended up drifting apart and I haven't played in years. We had started with AD&D 2nd Edition, then moved onto Rifts and other Palladium games (Nightbane was my favourite). I discovered BRP about a year ago when I purchased the Call of Cthulhu sourcebook because I'm a Lovecraft fan. Since then, BRP rekindled my love affair with RPG's and I'm looking forward to using some of the expansions on the system to really get back into gaming.
  11. Just wanted everyone's thoughts on running solo scenarios and campaigns. I used to game with a group of 5 in total (1 GM and 4 players) but with life being as busy as it is (new job, new kid, new house, everyone moving...) I'm now only able to get together with 1 other person. I've been GM'ing and he's been the player, and it's been working surprisingly well. I used to play Rifts/Palladium games and I have a feeling those would be very difficult to run with only 1 player (or any traditional RPG/D&D party style game), but I'm finding that Call of Cthulhu runs really really well with only 1 player. It almost runs better because you're able to really heighten the dread because the player is COMPLETELY on his own. Any thoughts on solo'ing?
  12. Thanks for the great ideas everyone! I'm going to be tackling another Call of Cthulhu:Dark Ages scenario and I'm going to do some "home tooling" with some of the combat tools. We've also bought the monogram "Classic Fantasy" which looks to have some interesting combat rules (looks to take liberally from Runequest which looks promising).
  13. Thanks for the quick reply---guess I just play the waiting game now!
  14. I'd love to find a print copy of Classic Fantasy but it looks like Chaosium isn't stocking it anymore (only PDF). Any other places I might find a print copy? I realize I can download the PDF and print it myself but I'd honestly prefer spending a few more dollars and having the real book. I'm dying for a good old fashioned dungeon crawler. I've been playing Palladium Fantasy lately and I surprisingly enjoy the Palladium system more than I remember, but it's a bit of stat overload. And D20 stuff just gives me nosebleeds...
  15. I revisited CoC this past week and I hadn’t played it in ages. I had picked up the supplement CoC Dark Ages (awesome setting) and was GM’ing. The game was going incredible, and even skill fails had become a great source of drama. As many of the previous people commented, it’s how the GM describes a fail. My issue, however, was with combat. One of the investigators had a blunt weapon skill of 55%, which isn’t terrible, but the fight just descended into a slapstick comedy of errors with the investigator AND the creature rolling “fails/misses” for about 12 combat rounds. Finally, my creature (a resurrected girl from the village) hit a critical fail and I simply had her fall onto her knife! I really enjoy BRP’s simple system and that it doesn’t concern itself with intricacies, but I’d like some suggestions on how to handle fighting a little better because it seems we hit a wall. And yes, I know that CoC isn’t about fighting , but since there is so little combat, I want to ensure the fights that are present are dramatic and memorable. Thanks!
