  1. This first semester of Tabletop Game Writing Lab students at Taylor University showed amazing passion and professionalism, well beyond a semester course. Their passion got this course approved, their creativity designed the scenario, and their hard work produced this award winning scenario. I am honored and proud to have taught this course and been a developer on this project.

  2. My students from the Fall 2019 Tabletop Game Writing Lab have updated their Call of Cthulhu scenario, Refractions of Glasston, responding to the great feedback they received.     Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback so far. The students and I met yesterday to review the feedback and set our project schedule for a revised edition that incorporates the errata  many of you have shared and to resolve some issues with the layout we were made aware of. We will also be working on a print on demand option.

    Our goal is to have the revised edition completed by mid March, in time to submit it to the ENnie Awards for consideration.

    Thanks for providing great comments. I have been so impressed with these students in our first time offering this course. They were really passionate and took the project very seriously. The designed and published a wonderful scenario for their first ever time writing scenario for publication. We all learned in the process and are already thinking of how to make the next revision of this course even better.

    It actually happens more than once. Page 25 too. The only reason it bothered me is because I printed black and white and the sidebar's color was indistinguishable from the main body text in black and white. Sidebars just need a bit more contrast with the page.

    Thanks for the info. Those are sidebars and they are visible in the full color version. The students are hoping to have time this Spring semester to make a printer friendly and print on demand version. We will keep the sidebars in mind.

    I appreciate the original poster may not wish to do this for professional reasons, but I for one would be curious to see the syllabus and course materials, and the assignment sheet for the course.  I also look forward to reading the scenario and reviewing it.

    The reason this scenario is free for everyone to enjoy is it was designed and published as part of an academic course at the university. The students received academic credit for their work. We also like it being free as it will receive wider distribution and hopefully increased discussion and reviews. This feedback will provide the students information to improve their writing and editing while the Professional Writing major will use this feedback to improve future gaming related courses at the university.

    I have received other emails and social media questions about why we posted this for free as well. Glad so many think this would have been worth a cost to acquire, but we really do want the feedback as much as possible.

    You are welcome. This has been a learning process for the students and myself teaching the course this first time. I am really looking forward to the feedback from others so we can make the next iteration of this course even better and to improve on this scenario as well.

    A question for you:  do you anticipate more/other such classes in your future?  More CoC, or might you do other Chaosium products (e.g. for Jonstown Compendium), or consider other publishers' games such as D&D5e, Savage Worlds, etc?

    Thanks! This class has been a challenge and a joy to teach. I am discussing this course and its predecessor, Writing & Editing for Gaming, with the Professional Writing Department at Taylor University now. I have taught the Writing & Editing for Gaming class twice now and this Tabletop Game Writing Lab this first time. They have been very successful and popular, so we are discussing how best to proceed and if we should make these a permanent addition to the department course offerings 

    If I were to teach this in the future, which I am hoping to, I would discuss possibilities again with Chaosium, Inc. and some other publishers I know well. I think it would be interesting to vary what genre and game system we focus the class on each time we teach it, perhaps returning to CoC again later in the future. But it will depend on collaboration with a publisher. That element is what really made this class a great and professional experience for the students.

    The students are finishing up the layout and final proofreading of their adventure now and will be publishing it to Miskatonic Repository at the end of the semester which is in less than two weeks.
