I see no reason to believe that Gloranthans are more simplistic than RW humans.  If the majority of our ancestors can see that there are obviously deities, but a significant minority disagree, why not Gloranthans?  In the Bronze and Iron Ages the vast majority would tell you that the gods were totally evident.  Atheism was sufficiently strong that it was spoken against in Psalm 14 "The fool says in his heart 'There is no god'".

It's not about simplistic, it's about actual proof.

If you say, 'I don't believe in your storm god!' And I lightning bolt you a couple of times, it's going to give you serious pause for thought.

Even the purest of Malioni believe in Gods, they just think they are jumped up spirits and we shouldn't be boosting their egos.

as in our world in ancient times, save that Glorantha is far more restrained than we Earthlings ever were. The sky and air gods don't perform human sacrifice.

Tell Meso and South America that! But seriously, GRoY and Enk hint at human sacrifice in Solar worship in the past and Shargash likes a taste.

Another method of great historicity is to convince the slaves that they don't deserve any better, that they are fulfilling the role destiny holds for them.  By being the best slave they can be they might be rewarded a) in heaven or b) in their next incarnation.

Where has this happened in history?

As a side note, i really, really like the presence of this kind of stuff, and hope that Gods of Glorantha can give us more detail about it. Maybe is a bit unconventional or dark, but honestly, this really reaffirm the bronze age feel around the Orlanthi.

Off screen and not in your face, yes.

Hope. 'Dry as a funeral drum.' So, no.

Nice thought, but I am sure the house was rigged.

I think modern research suggest that most fights weren't, 'To The Death!!!'. Gladiators were expensive things, expensive to buy, expensive to train and keep. Throwing that kind of money away frequently would quickly make it a really bad investment. The point was to make money, not to throw it at the crowd saying, 'Here, have this for S&G!'

I would be more strict, as Orlanth being associated with Oslira in Tarsh or Holay does not mean Oslira is an associate of Orlanth in Sartar. Or that an Orlanthi near Alkoth will be welcome to worship in an Oslira temple. Those are social aspects, rather than religious, but still important as you cannot worship if you are not allowed in.

I use a rule of thumb. If it is likely there will be a small shrine to the associate in the temple, I allow associate worship. Otherwise, no. However if you are doing a globe trotting campaign, then recovering rune magic is more MGF than making it difficult, except when you want to stress the player and the character.

Engizi is a sure bet, however.

I'm not sure why it would be associated with Orlanth at all, I would have her associated with Shafesora, the rain goddess of Peloria instead and Entekos, gentle wind god of the Yelm pantheon. Wrong side of the mountains for Orlanth.

Lantern is a Yelmalio cult special, that is cheaper (15L as it's half price to initiates vs 50L) with a slightly larger radius (12 vs 10m) and pretty much designed for shields. Light is a point of light, that everyone else has to use.

So you can't cast a light spell on the boss of a shield and have the same effect? Isn't every surface made up of 'points'?

Besides the obvious, I'm not sure what the difference between a globe and half a globe of light is, please enlighten me?

The price thing really is immaterial for players I think and really seems unfathomable for a cult spell, do the spirits demand more sacrifice, does it take less time to teach, are there more spirits with it so they are easier to 'catch'? It seems odd that a specialist spell is cheaper.

I always saw it as a way not to blind everyone behind you too. The direction helps with keeping night vision somewhat intact. Not a massive difference, but this is how I use it in game:

Light: Easily cast on things like a tree branch, an enemy's shirt, the tip of a long spear held up high and so on. Very good for spreading ambient light in battle, makes it easy to pick out enemies while still keeping somewhat hidden in the shadows. More like a lamp post, it needs to be high not to blind people and rob them of night vision.

Lantern: The big flashlight. Good to cast on the shield of the person who walks first in a tunnel, making sure everyone behind them is not blinded. Good for traveling, underground, and to make it less easy to spot from behind. Good to travel with, like the headlights of a car.

(guess who have spent way too much time out in the dark swedish coutryside/forests and who is running a campaign with Yelmalians...)

I don't think it is that strong, in fact it is the same strength as a Light spell, so the only difference is it is 180 degrees only and a slight increase in distance. Sunbright it ain't.

People behind will still see the light in front of them.

  9. Now Lantern is no longer a variable spell, what is the point[sic]? Yes it has a slightly larger area of effect, but it doesn't illuminate a whole circle [is the other half just normal light?], meaning you have to faf to do anything in it, unless the caster is at the back.

Anyone got any sensible fixes to this almost duplicating 'light' spell?

let's say that from a game perspective, seeing the scenario we frequently see, the capacity or not to have sex is not the most important.

And even if there is an activity (oups a fantasy activity, don't imagine anything around the table !) during the play, i would be surprised that someone would tell us that this wonderful scene would last more than one or to minute to be described.

but I agree that I would avoid any geas like that for my own life 🙂 (And yes I don't care to be able or not to wear an armor on my left arm)

Let's say, alternatively, someone is trying to build a family.

And let's get away from the Murder Munchkin.

On the matter of "never trust ...": this basically means "never accept hospitality from ..." as a practical consequence. Obviously there would be ways around this, or a good number of Yelmalians would be barred from entering cities run by an Orlanth Rex city king, but it can result in quite a bit of bad vibes when approaching a place in company of bearers of such a geas.

The city bit is a bit tenuous, if you had to go to his palace then, yes. City? Probably not.

The dietary and celibacy requirements aren't restrictive enough to be actively detrimental, except for maybe total celibacy depending on your point of view. In total they make up 33% of the standard geas list. Several of the armor, shield, and weapon restrictions probably don't affect your average Yelmalian either, though that will vary based on the temple (I imagine Pentans would be pretty annoyed at being denied leather armor, while Vaantar hoplites would prefer to keep their metal).

Yeah, I disagree, your qualification is circumspect. What does 'actively' mean? Always? when in an empty house with no one there and plenty of non restricted food? in a season of non sundays?

In that respect none of them are detrimental, if you are not fighting, none of the martial ones are detrimental, if you are, they are [depending]. If you aren't in love or married or having sex, the celibacy ones aren't, but they are, if you are. If you don't have sex perhaps you don't miss it?
I also suppose it depends on how much non-combat, jumpyclimby RPGing you do?
If your horse's leg is broken and you are waiting for someone with enough healing for an hour, they it's detrimental, if you're not, it's not.

Your definition is a bit vague to say the least and very very open to debate.

It seems to be more like a quarter.

I jettisoned those very early - I found them way too tedious to deal with.

I like the split between CHA for spirit magic and INT for sorcery in RQG. That feels right to me.

Except that it's not complete, your sorcery restricts the number of spirit magic spells you can know, for some bizarre reason.

  15. A lot of it.

The smoothing of the stat bonuses,

    The char creation by age.

Bringing spell into line with each other.

    The materials for the DM.

    incomplete creatures stuff

Sorcery [even if it was flawed]

Fleshing out of the other Elder Races to some degree [I assume you are just talking about the big box set or we could be here a loooong time]

Other stuff I can't put my finger on at the mo.

Strange that river Gods don't have asociations with sea Gods.

I think they do and there is no reason they shouldn't be on there.

She would be associated with the White Sea and others that helped her near drown the world.

Pulling this out of Shargash's thread for clarity's sake.

For skills, I'd give her the same set as Engizi: Boat, Cult Lore, River Lore, Speak Boatspeech, and Swim.

She probably has God-talkers along with regular Rune Priests.

Her Rune spells were given in another thread as Breathe Air/Water, Command Crocodile, Command Fish, Control Flood, Dismiss Water Elemental (any size), Flood, Summon Naiad, Summon Crocodile, Summon Water Elemental (any size), and Water Walk.

As of the last cults draft that the Well documented, she's associated with Biselenslib, Everina, Jadarenasa, Lodril, Pelora, Orlanth Thunderous, River Horse, Shargash, Yelm, and Yestendos. No clue what each of them provide though.

    Uggh, how dull!
No offence but we [you and I] can do better than that.

I've given her an Oslira voiced/centred myth and history [rather than the usual Orlanthi one masquerading as the God Learners], Summon Naga Rune spell and others away from the usual run of the mill ones [someone really has had a failure of imagination], and actual connections with the gods of where she is most important, rather than being associated [Associated!!! WTF?] with the god that supposedly destroyed her. Someone really seems to think that every female god that Orlanth looks at wants to get into his pants.
    Living in the 80's much?
