Vizel - Free Inquiry Protection

Recommended Posts

What is Free Inquiry?

The GtG mentions that scholars and sages are attracted here because of the protection of Free Inquiry. What comes to mind is, there is a small temple of the Lankhor Mhy emanation of the Invisible God. Because of the Western influence of that, one can research things not normally allowed in traditional Orlanthi society? I dunno... forbidden magics or the abiding book... (is it related to the Jelenkev School in Duchamp thats about 15 miles up river?)

I interpret it to mean that you can study anything, or ask/speculate about/question anything.  It may be protected by Orlanth as much as LM given this aspect of "freedom" (kind of related to "no one can make me do anything" - in this case "no one can tell me what I can or cannot ask")

So, yes, a small temple of LM, as an emanation of the Invisible God, and they can study, explore, and philosophize about the way that the Runes and perhaps the world as a whole may interact.  (I'd generally think of Socratic dialogues in this context.)  Whether or not it is connected with, or perhaps more likely a break-away splinter group from, the Jelenkev School is unknown at present.

Jelenkev is noted for its copying of manuscripts, which suggests it is like a medieval monastery - much exact copying, but not asking questions of the texts they copy from.

I would have connected it to the Free Philosophers but I see in the Glorantha Sourcebook that the Philosophers are connected to the Free Sages who are an even stronger candidate.  Unfortunately there isn't much said about them.  Sartar Companion p10 describes the Free Sages as being the alternative name for those initiated into the cult of Lhankor Mhy at Jonstown so perhaps the worship of Lhankor Mhy at Jonstown was founded by Sages from Vizel?  If it is connected with Jelenkev, I think the Free means the Sages at Vizel revolted against the stuffy traditions of Jelenkev with its emphasis on fidel copies and founded a rival tradition.  Thus they aren't reacting against Orlanthi society, they are reacting against Lhankor Mhy traditions!
