Why does a gloranthan fall ?

Is the underworld upside down? So if gravity pulls towards Gata, does the Styx flow on the underside of the Earth? 😉

We know that the sky dome continues below the horizon, and that there are planets continuing their journeys beyond their setting gates. (Mastakos and Lightfore either are an exceptvoion, or really two bodies running opposite of one another.)

The down on the  sky dome could be pointing either outward or inside - for the mythical journeys of e.g. Lightfore to be seen, they must happen on the inside of the visible sky, with the observer looking at that from above, same as for anything happening on the surface of the Red Moon.

When sailing up the Celestial River, there appears to be a well defined surface, and perhaps some depth, but it isn't clear which side of the river a vessel will be sailing - do you see the surface world shimmering through from under the keelwave, or is it overhead? There is a scene in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 where the Black Pearl undergoes such a transition.

Anyway, low above the horizon the sky dome is nearly vertical, so the up vertical from the surface doesn't point to either Dayzatar or Subere, but towards or awy from Magasta and Brastalos. But then, light (or the space it travels through) being bendy, what you see when you look above needn't be what there is in the direction above.

For the moon surface, I have the theory that the ball in the sky is only a huge reflector, and that its surface actually is in a large spherical hollow in the inside of the Crater. The moon has a mountain range called the Crown Mountains, beyond which you cannot see from anywhere on the Surface World. IMO that range looks identical to the crater rim. That doesn't solve any "gravity" issues for places further up on that surface at all, though. Places on the moon's equator still would be as vertical as Last Stop Island and the Iron City inside Magasta's Whirlpool.

The dark side of the moon is Glorantha herself.

Reading the topic  about slow spell I have now this question in mind

as glorantha is not spheric, the irl gravity law cannot apply

so how can we explain people fall ? What force and or myth defines that if you are in middle air you should quickly learn Fly spell if you want to survive ?

Gravity derives from the Stasis Rune, which may be the first Rune, and the anchor point of all reality.

Nothing to do with Gloranthan explanations but I can't help pointing out that IRL gravity has nothing much to do with spheres - it's the mass that causes the gravity. So a large cube of stuff will still exert a force. If you were using IRL gravity to explain it it might be a bit weird at the edges though...

Always start what you finish.

at the end of the day a massive cube becomes a sphere because gravity is "centric"

I never heard any planet or star in other shape than "about spheres" 🙂

True, but it would mean that in most places, you would experience gravity at an angle compared to the flat ground (as though you always stood on a slope). We can tell that this isn’t the case in Glorantha in any number of ways.

Actually, the Red Moon is not the only celestial orb that has (or used to have) people inhabiting their surfaces.

This may have been restricted to "moons", aka planets using a female pronoun - at least I haven't heard about Shadzorings or fire demons inhabiting the planet Tolat, or Lightfore carrying any surface life. All bets are off for Lokarnos, a deity known for carrying stuff, or the Boat Planet, another vehicle that is usually at least crewed. But then, are these planetary bodies actually orbs, or are they perceived by their crews (and hypothetical inhabitants) as a wagon or a water vessel, respectively?

The Zaranistangi on Melib have histories of their ancestors debarking from Veldara's Blue Moon (=Annilla?) and the blue planet Mastakos (which they call Emilla).

These bodies may not have been perceived as orbs by the people inhabiting their surface (assuming that they did inhabit the surface, rather than an interior). For Veldara, we know that the Artmali thought of her surface as a land in the sky, with no question about how to stay upon a spherical surface without falling off - they remember that they had to use the ships made of the solidifying moon glow to leave the lunar surface for the Surface World.

If these celestial body inhabitants saw the Earth Cube overhead, they may have wondered why people did not fall off that weird surface. Or not.

Problem with the theory of Runic attraction is that without the use of magic, an Orlanthi priest and and Erithean priestess hit the ground at exactly the same time if you push them of a cliff together.

We need more experiments.  Especially with Illuminants.

Well, there's Bizzaro/Htrae. What, you don't consider it scientifically accurate?

Most philosophers influenced by the God Learners (so that includes the Malkioni, the Orlanthi, the Kralorelans, Teshnites, and Fonritians) believe that things with weight fall down to the earth by a law of nature. It is in the nature of Earth to attract and to keep things, as it is the nature of water to flow. Things with Earth (substances made of matter) move downward to reach her.
