Brootse
Runequest Roleplaying in Glorantha p. 422: Additional Penalties to the Occupation Income Roll: The Occupation Income roll assumes the adventurer is engaged in their occupation each season, gone no more than three weeks or so (“adventuring time”). If an adventurer is absent for more than that in a season, the penalty is a cumulative –20% per three-week period. No Occupation Income roll is possible if the adventurer is gone for the full year. At that point, they need a tenant or agent to work for them. Have you included spell teaching and learning in this three weeks adventuring time in your games? Blindhamster
if they're learning spells, they aren't working for me, its one of the things I actually really like with RQ - time feels like it moves on much more quickly, which makes choices like being young or old much more meaningful at the start too.

What time they don't spend adventuring they can do whatever. They usually spend that time either learning spells or traveling to a temple for the holy day or to buy something they can't get locally.
tnli
I let them have up to 3 weeks of adventure and one training or research project per season without penalties to occupation rolls. Have not yet decided on how long spell training takes.

Have not yet decided on how long spell training takes. Spell training time is defined in RQG: For spirit magic, page 277: "This occupies a week of ritual and training during which nothing else may be done..." Gaining rune magic would technically appear to happen when POW is sacrificed for it (p.314) but p.313 says "the sacrifice requires a full week of prayer and meditation in the temple. at the end of the which the adventurer sacrifices 1 or more POW points and gains an equal number of rune points".. so that's a week also.
