  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Miskatonic Repository Catalogue - updated 15 June 2021

Updated again on 15 June 2021: now lists 503 titles, with refreshed best-seller medals for the 64 hottest titles.

Currently teetering on the brink of its Silver best-seller medal: thank you for all the support and positive feedback!

If you're not sure how useful this is, someone recently asked on Facebook if any scenarios were set in Britain in the 1920s: a few moments filtering the Catalogue provided a list of relevant community content.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Miskatonic Repository Catalogue - updated 10 July 2021

Updated again on 10 July 2021: the catalogue now lists 516 titles.

A prospective author recently asked how other creators are pricing their Miskatonic Repository titles. My catalogue lists the price per page for every item in the store, as well as their best-seller medals: because it's a spreadsheet, it'd be simple to manipulate the data and do your own analysis.

I also recently looked at the time it took the fastest-selling English-language community content titles to earn their best-seller medals (NB: this analysis uses information not available from the Miskatonic Repository Catalogue: I'm sharing this for information, not as an example of what the catalogue can do):

Quote

Time to Silver best-seller (>100 sales)

  • One month: Sorrow in Tsavo, The Room with No Doors, The Saltwater Inheritance, A Greater Goal, Full Fathom Five, Monophobia, Future Echoes
  • Two months: The Idol of Thoth, An Inner Call, The Solo Investigator’s Handbook, The Shepherd of Moths
  • Three months: The Mummy of Pemberley Grange, Jellyfish Shark, Visceral and Emotional Damage, The Highway of Blood
  • Four months: My Guardian Monster, The Cabin in the Woods, The World of Necronomicon
  • Five months: A Balance of Blood
  • Six months: Devilarium: Thornen Servant, The Scales of Time, The Kirkwood Farmhouse Massacre, Rising from the Stars

Time to Electrum best-seller (>250 sales)

  • Four months: The Idol of Thoth, Full Fathom Five
  • Six months: The Solo Investigator’s Handbook, The Shepherd of Moths
  • Twelve months: The World of Necronomicon, Highway of Blood

A word of caution: these analyses use calendar months, so a title that came out late in the month is less likely to make any given cut than one that came out earlier. Don't read too much into relative positions, is all I'm saying.

If you want to pick up any best-selling titles to see what they get right, you can easily filter the catalogue on column H so only best-selling items are shown, each hyperlinked to its product page on DriveThruRPG.

Were any of these titles kickstarted titles? And will that have affected the sale, maybe?

There are no crowdfunded titles on the Miskatonic Repository, as it's against the community content agreement.

The most noticeable spikes in sales happen when a title has the great good fortune to be included in the annual Halloween Bundle -- sales go through the roof for those beauties!

My guess is that other titles that do well are either from known "names" (Fricker, Black, Morrison...), scratch an itch (two solo titles can't be a coincidence, right?), got great reviews / word of mouth on release, or had the good luck to be in the right place at the right time (interesting premise, reasonable price-point, quality appearance, launch titles: you name it!).

Holy BatCthulhu Batman!!!

Now that is something.

And thanks again for the catalog. especially the excel version. Being able to filter has fast become the only way to be able to find items in the time period you like to play.

I really wish I could read Korean 🧐  Such a long list of intriguing titles.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Miskatonic Repository Catalogue - updated 12 October 2021

Updated on 12-Oct-2021: now lists 635 titles.

Breakdown by language:

  • English: 390
  • Korean: 162
  • Polish: 49
  • French: 12
  • Spanish: 7
  • Italian: 6
  • Japanese: 5
  • Chinese: 2
  • 1 each: Bahasa Indonesia, Catalan, Russian, Turkish

Breakdown by period:

This is a fairly crude analysis. The 1920s remains the most popular era by far, with around 200 scenarios. There are around 70 Modern scenarios (1980s to now), less than 20 Gaslight (1890s), and about 80 set in other periods... ranging from Antiquity and the Dark Ages to feudal Japan, with a smattering in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries inc. the Old West, various from specific years in the mid-twentieth century, then onwards to the Near Future and beyond.

Caveats: Around 40% of scenario descriptions don't specify when they are set in their English-language descriptions or previews: those haven't been analysed. Categories may overlap (e.g. Viking Era & Dark Ages; Old West & specific years; 1920s & specific years; Modern & specific years; etc.)

Does this have a filter for number of investigators?

Nope. Most authors don’t mention that, so it would be misleading.
