Omnichron

Omnichron is a "hard" Sci-fi setting that can be used with several systems as people see fit.

Originally I was gonna use it with Mongoose Traveller, but the emerging rpg called Diaspora with the FATE 3 system made the win for me. But I will post the setting here as it don't fit specific to one type of system. I hope this will be of use to someone.

Firstly I will introduce the beginning of an timeline stretching from 2030 to 2504. And then more of the setting as time goes by.

This is the first part of the Timeline.

OMNICHRON - TIMELINE

2030 – The European Union (EU) is melded into a larger federation and is baptized the European Federation, only the Scandinavian nations in Europe do not join and makes their own Scandinavian Union. The US is having its third major financial crisis since the beginning of the new millennium and poverty is skyrocketing across the nation, there are also beginning to be food shortages as less people take to farming and nation wide work is being done to make it a more lucrative profession. China becomes a real economic superpower easily passing the US and many European nations together alike. Russia have a huge internal political crisis as the government is splitting up in a huge political scandal, hundreds are killed and many more hurt in riots that last for half a year across the nation. Minor Moon bases are being made.

2035 – Russia has rebuilt it self, and most corrupted officials have been pressed out of the political scene. The new Russian policy is to be a huge industrial nation and trying to compete with China. Tens of thousands get jobs in the industrial sector and the immense poverty the country has known for decades is beginning to fade away. The US have stabilized it self and is beginning to work hard to compete with both China and Russia to be the biggest industrial nation in the world. India falls into a war with Pakistan, and the whole of Pakistan becomes part of India again for the first time in many decades. India will have hundreds of terrorist attacks for years to come and the whole region is destabilizing. China and Japan joins together in a Space Agency agreement and starts the ASA (Asian Space Agency).

2041 – Man-kinds first direct visit on Mars. There is no sign of life with the deeper probings, but there is evidence that it once had life in form of insect and plantlike life. All of this is based of on fossilized prints inside a cave wall. The planning of manned missions around the solar system is beginning to be planned by the four great Space Agencies.

2046 – A permanent moon base have been made.

2050 – A Permanent Mars base have been made. A massive mobile survey of mars finds a huge discovery of something that looks like some sort of crashed satellite. It is not human in origin, and the four space agencies hold the information from the public knowledge. The technology is not to much advanced, but also so wrecked that nothing is really salvageable, dating of the wreckage finds that it have crashed landed for two hundred years ago.

2064 – Humans have now visited the moons of Europa and Titan.

2081 – The nations on Earth have finally come to some sort of stability, no war or other form of aggression have existed since 2060. Small bases have been made in the asteroid belt, and on a couple of Jupiter's moons.

2094 – We visit Pluto for the first time. And we discover an object between it and its moon Charon. It looks like some sort of enormous gate. There is not possible to take readings of it and therefor was impossible to detect other then visually. And as it always was in the shadow of Charon this was the first possible time to notice it. The next six years is used to study the gate, and in 2105 it is activated for the first time. Probes are sent through some sort wormhole, or slipstream, an effect that scientist have dubbed the omnichron effect, or the all-time effect. That bends a point in space so that it exist at the same place in the same time and makes it possible to travel almost with an instant. The probes never return, and data transmission is not yet possible, as the scientist have not yet figured out how to compensate for the omnichron effects distorting properties. In 2110 the gate's existence is revealed to the public, and amazement is filling humanity. We are not alone, but who built them and where does it lead. But fear and paranoia also fills many. Soon there are conspiracy cults looking over their shoulders all the time, hunting for hidden and non existent threats on earth, in hopes of finding aliens spies.

2112 – The first human gating is done. The gate leads to another solar system, and with coordinating star-placement and other stellar bodies, it it believed to be the Alpha Centauri system. Minor expeditions and probe launches are being planned for the next two decades.

The last part of the Timeline... Remember, this is only the shortened down version of the history chapter spanning several pages long.

2128 – There is now a dozen different corporations making profits in space: Mining, Surveying, Exploration, Making Space Ships and so forth. But none of them have yet been through the Alpha Gate. There are 10 planets in the Alpha Centauri system, two of them have human friendly conditions, and one of those two is almost similar to Earth. Only primitive animal life is supported on the planets. Plans for colonies are being moved forward.

2150 – The Alpha Gate have been opened for commercial space traffic and two minor colonies have been made in the Alpha Centauri system. Earth suffers from overpopulation with 15 billion people and it is beginning to be felt on the infrastructure, while plans are being made to expand the cities of earth dramatically, plans for full scale colonization have already been set in motion. Two new gates is found at the edge of the Alpha Centauri system, both intact but inoperative, six months of preparation makes them operational. The gates leads to two new solar systems, and expeditions are being prepped.

2200 – Several millions live on stations and in colonies, and each day hundreds are leaving Earth for space and a new life. Two dozen corperations are making fortunes in space. Aeon Technologies is the biggest, and its yearly income is greater then several countries yearly budget. Rumors of work exploitation have surfaced about a few of the mining corporations.

2215 – Two more systems have been found. Space Drives become almost twice as effective and it will be over two hundred years before they get better.

The Great Mining Riot starts, the reason is extreme working conditions and a horrible pay. When security personnel accidentally shoots and kills a rioter, all hell breaks lose. Before the dust is settled, several dozens of people is killed. About three thousand miners steal one hundred mining barges and rigs and flies off into deep space with their families, they will be the start of the histories first space pirates that will plague the systems for the next two hundred years until the time of The Ship and The Cataclysm. Three of the big mining corporations goes out of business and only two remains. Luna Mining and Deep Core, though several small ones do exist.

2260 – Every system now had at least one colony. On earth several colony ships capable of transporting thousands are being made ready for the long journey to the different colonies. Every year, for the next few decades on such ship will leave Earth.

2277 – Will be a year remembered as The Great Tragedy. The Helion mining base in the Alpha Centauri asteroid field, comes under a massive pirate attack, involving what is believed to be at least a dozen ships. When the station refused to surrender, the pirates responded by firing several torpedoes at the base, killing over ten thousand miners and their families. There had never been any strong military presence in space before, this was now changing. United nations Space Corp was founded. And over the next three decades, UNSC would build up a sizable fleet to combat the pirate threat.

2350 – A total of eight systems have been explored and still new gates have been found in each system. But there was still no further evidence on who built the gates and why. But Aeon technologies and UNSC have come to the conclusion that the space probe found on Mars in the 2050's is not of the same alien origins, and actually is far inferior in technology then the gates. We don't know how the gates work and what its energy source really are, but the gates are at least one hundred thousand years old the least.

2400 – The Red Revolt starts. Mars wants independence from the Earth governments. This demand would last for a two year long war, much of it in space between military space ships. This war will be a valuable lesson of space warfare for mankind in the time to come. The Red Revolt gets subdued and a new Martian government is put in place. Most of Earths Nations and those of each colony signs a contract of Alliance so that not another happening like the Red Revolt will ever happen again.

2458 – The Halycon Institute is founded in secrecy with several governments blessings. Its mission to map the extent and existence of humans with psionic abilities. Many innocent lives will be lost in experimentations that will never be known about.

2493 – Total there have been 10 systems now explored (not thoroughly). The total human population is now 28 billion and five of those life away from Earth. One gigantic colony ship with 300 000 colonist's is lost in a Gate accident. But no debris is ever found (the fate of the colonist's is detailed in a future supplement called “Omnichron-Snowstorm”).

2504 – Aeon Technologies discovers a gigantic ship on the edge of the tenth system, dubbed “The Ship”, its over 20 kilometers long and over 17 kilometers wide. And between the anchoring parts of what can only be called its arms is an inactive gate... Aeon technologies and UNSC sends a joint science and military ship to investigate “The Ship”. Six months after the investigation starts, The Cataclysm happens....

The Nominal Start Year for the Omnichron setting is the year 2504 before “The Ship” is discovered.

The Ship

The infamous ship, lies on the edge of the tenth explored system. It is a massive behemoth with a length of over 20 km and a width of over 17 km, and is at the very least about 750 meters from bottom to top. It has a U shape, where the bottom of the U seems to be the end of the ship. It looks rusty and old, but very intact from the outside. Between the arms of the U, there is a Omnichron Gate, clapped together and inactive, fastened to the tethers of The Ship.

The Only conclusion is that the makers of the Gates used this ship and possibly more then this one to create the gate network, but how it alone traveled the vastness of space without the help of the gates is unknown, as its size is greater then the gate can be expanded.

Omnichron starts before the Aeon Technologies and UNSC sends their ships to investigate it, even before the ships is even discovered to begin with. Because this is a momentous change in the setting when it is discovered. Only the player characters should be the ones involved in the investigation. The time for when the ship is discovered, if ever can be extended as long as the group and storyguide sees fit. Because it will change the face of the established setting so far in the timeline. To what have now a couple of times been called for The Cataclysm.

The investigation of the ship should be a campaign in its own rights, going over multiple stories to be fulfilled. The full details will be up to each group, but the setting will detail much about the ship, and even a little about its history. Marvels and wonders found on the inside, dangers and horrors. Are there crew inside, if not where are they and what where their fate. What was the real mission of The Ship, how old is it, can we use the technology found within. Can the ship be activated. Where does the inactive and tethered gate lead? Those and many more questions are up to the player to find out. And the end answers may vary differently depending on the groups, a few optional answers will be given, and one official one that can be followed if desirable. The players should be the big guns when it comes to the investigation. Ship Captain, lead scientist, captain of the security, chief Engineer and so forth are the type of people that the player will enjoy the most out in this story arc.

But then again, it can be a rival company that is secretly already trying to study it, and the players are crew on that mission instead. Or Pirates scavenging from the ship to sell on the black market, and so forth. There are many optional directions to go, and even encouraged to try out besides the official setting.

KjetilKverndokken have you been reading any Richard Morgan books by any chance? Your game background sounds a bit like the book Broken Angels, in places.:)

heh, actually, this is the first time I have heard about him and that book. My ideas are about 16 year old and finally refined. But I guessed that somewhere there would be something written thats similar.

I might actually check out the book series - thanks for the heads up. :thumb:

THE SYSTEMS

There are ten solar systems, not including our own, that humanity have visited and or made colonies in. This is the ten – very briefly described.

1. Proxima Centauri

The closest star to our our own solar system will not always be closest, but it will be a long time before that happens. Proxima Centauri is the third star in the Alpha Centauri star system, now mostly known as Alpha Centauri. Two planets have life, and one is very Earthlike. There are two major colonies there and a few bases.

Distance: 4.2 LY

2. Rigil Kentaurus

The second closest star is a tie between the sister stars of Proxima Centauri. Alpha Centauri A and B make up the other two stars of the triple star system Alpha Centauri. Kentaurus as the system is known have a dozen planets, and is very similar to Alpha Centauri, in because this was the second new system explored, humans were led to believe then that almost every star system had life of some kind. There is one life sustaining planet here half again the size of Earth, it have two polar caps, but the rest is jungle. A huge colony is here and timber is a huge export

Distance: 4.3 LY

3. Barnard's Star

A faint red dwarf star, this is a dark system with very little light. No life is on any of the planets, but they are filled with mineral riches and three asteroid belts. There are no gas giants, only four rocky planets. There is several big mining colonies in the system and a few dockyards. The whole system is used as a major industrialized center.

Distance: 5.9 LY

4. Wolf

Wolf 359 was believed to be a red dwarf. But there is a yellow star in the system, three quarters the size of our own. Why there is a confusion among the red dwarf issue and the yellow star is uncertain, as the calculation must make it the Wolf star. The Wolf Solar system has no life like planets, but one of them a rocky desert have somewhat breathable air, similar to how it is to be on mountains in some of the bigger mountain ranges on Earth. It has one colony and several bases, among them the Main Halycon R&D base.

Distance: 7.7 LY

5. Lalande

While it is the fifth closest star to our own sun, Lalande 21185 is about three times too faint to be seen with the naked eye. Its a Yellow star half the size of the sun. It have very few planets, only three, and the closest have life, something akin to reptiles and insects on Earth. There is only one colony there and no other base except the refueling station in orbit of the first planet.

Distance: 8.26 LY

6. Luyten

Discovered by Willem Jacob Luyten (1899-1994), Luyton is also another star mistaken somehow to be a red dwarf, actually it is a red giant, blazing hot in the solar system that contains 15 planets. Ten of them are gas giants, the two first are desert plants and the three last are ice planets. There are no colonies here, but several research and exploration bases.

Distance: 8.73 LY

7. Sirius

Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the sky. The solar system is very bright. With gas clouds drifting though it and bombarding the planets in sometimes brilliant spectacles. There are 7 planets here, one super gas giant, the rest are rocky planets, one of which have only plantlife, because of the bright light, the leafs and other vegetation have autumn colors all year around. There are two colonies here, and a few bases.

8. Ross Alpha

Ross 154 appears to be a flare star, which means that it can increase its brightness by a factor of 10 or more before reverting to its normal state, a process which takes only a few minutes. Because of this there are no life at all in this system. Also there are so many special phenomena in this system that it has puzzled science. Several science ships and bases is set up all around the system, and quite a few mining operations to get their hand on minerals and precious metals that for now is not known in any other system.

Distance: 9.693 LY

9. Ross Beta

While it is now the ninth closest star to our solar system, around the year 38000AD, the red dwarf Ross 248 will take the place of Proxima Centauri as the closest star to us. Is much alike the Barnard system, but has only two planets and one asteroid belt. Only a listening station have been built here.

Distance: 10.32 LY

10. Epsilon Eridani

Eridani is the newest starsystem found. And it was built up very much like our on Sol system when it came to planets. There is reason to believe the third planet had life just some ten thousand years ago. Two colonies and several bases is being built in this system. And on the edge of this system Aeon Technologies have found the remains of a massive Ship...

Next up will be a closer look at our own Sol System, the colonies there and what we have found and done.

I will not go into any special detail on the conditions on Earth at the moment, that will be for later. But there are no significant changes in the way our home looks, some cities have become quite larger, and architecture modernized, but the basic principles are stil the same as its today.

Believe me there are not, if it where you should be armed with vortex grenades instead ;-).

But the ship will have one author's official view on whats inside the ship. but I will post example optional versions to be used instead - and then again its up to each their own what the ship is to best work for their setting.

Oh, the ten systems is by fact the 10 closest to earth in all reality.

Then its time for the first look on what is inside the systems, and first up is the Sol System, our own...

Then we are taking an even closer look on whats inside The Ship and a few of the ramifications from what the meddling on board the ship can lead to.

SOL SYSTEM

Our own Sol System is the one thats most explored and have most bases and stations. But on off Earth Colonies Alpha Centauri have the biggest.

This is just a very superficial look of the system and real detail will come in the fully realized work.

Venus – Deep Core have a big mining operation here to extract out rare minerals and precious metals, that is formed in the high temperature and volcanic activities the planet is ripe with. All the work is done underground, as the atmosphere is highly acidic and would have wrecked havoc on any topside equipment.

They who work on Venus are known to some of the toughest guys and gals in the mining industry.

Mars – Have three major cities and is the third largest colonies in the 11 systems. The three big cities are: Olympus, New Paris and Harlington. There are many more minor cities around the planet. Luna Mining extracts minerals from inside the dormant volcanos around the planet.

After the Red Riot, there have been a constant military presence here, and at all times there are at least 5 military vessels in orbit around the planet.

Asteroid Belt – Both Luna Mining and Deep Core plus several mining corps have small bases all over the field. There are really no other stations or bases here. The biggest mining facility have 25 thousand inhabitants.

Jupiter – Three of the moons around Jupiter, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, have big bases and stations in orbit. There where plans for more, but the radiation shielding that had to be created within each base made it less then lucrative endeavor to do. Europa's base is made for scientific purposes only, and have submarines in the depth of its oceans thats far below the icy crust of the moon. No reports of what lies beneath have been revealed to the public.

Saturn – The moon Titan is the only one that have been occupied, and the base is the greatest military space base in the Sol System. It have several ship wharfs in orbit and is the biggest line of defense Earth has.

Pluto – Pluto only have a listening station and several weapon platforms on the surface and in orbit. As the first Omnichron Gate and only one in our own system is here. In 2488 a misfire when one of the weapon platforms was tested, hit the Gate, the small nuclear warhead did no damage at all to the gate. Theorize of shielding or some special sub atomic manufacture of the gates seems to make them almost impervious to any type of weapons know to man.

Secrets of The Ship – Part 1

The Ship, The Great Ship. When the joint operation ship, The Daedalus, arrives, a huge preparation of how to go forward is being made.

The first EVA missions will reveal that the ship is intact, and no superficial damage is apparent. And it is very fast registered that The Ship is created in the same mystical way as the Gates and no reading can be taken with scanners, The Ship does not even exist to scanning devices.

The surface of the ship is very smooth, and have a brownish, almost rustic color. On the “top” part of The Ship there are three pyramids. The Pyramid in the end of the U is the biggest, and the two next ones are lesser in size. The Pyramids is made of the same material as the rest of the ships, and have the same mathematical proportions that the Egyptian pyramids on Earth.

The tethers that is holding together the Omnichron Gate looks like it only can be operated from the inside. A small gate on the side of one of the tethers is open and is the only way to get inside the ship.

Trying to drill into the ship will b met with extreme resistance. The heaviest drills will have to replace over a dozen heads just to get a inch through the hull plating. The hull plating is in several layers, and 10 meters on its thinnest and 25 meters on the thickest.

Optional: There are bodies floating between the arms of the U, they have somewhat humanoid form, but trying to get them inside will break them apart in seconds as they have become brittle ice.

So far I'm enjoying your setting. Are you (eventually) going to describe the gates themselves? I'm picturing a Stargate-esque device big enough to let the starship Enterprise through. Is the gate on "The Ship" the same size/description as the gates found (free-floating I'm guessing) in other systems? It sounds like each gate can only go to one other place. Again, I like this setting and may use it with the Cortex rules for a campaign.

Are the Omichron gates similar to the gates in the Freespace universe (a system to system jump node)?

Yes the gate in The Ship is the same, just folded together - an unfolded gate is 8 kilometers wide and 10 kilometers long.

The gates may look something like the Babylon 5 gates (I will have a sketch up not long from now).

As you are curios about the gates I will post about them either tonight or tomorrow :).

The gates are like nodes that links to another gate in another system. They can not be override to go to another gate then the one its bound to.

The gates fold space so when you enter it on one side you exit on the other side instantaneously. They need no external energy supply as they draw it directly from the phenomena that holds the gates linked (its a super-science)

To give an idea of how long it takes to get from Earth to the eleventh system and to The Ship, with the drive thrusters in my setting, is six months (its a bit of a stretch but still in the believable zone of hard sci-fi).

Its nice that you like the setting :).

As of now I'm unsure whether I'm gonna use Diaspora or Gurps for it, but every system that takes sci-fi somewhat serious should do Omnichron just fine, so Cortex would also be a good candidate.

The Gates

This is information added sooner by request - do ask if you want info on a special thing - I may then add it very soon.

The Omnichron gates is the biggest puzzle human history have ever encountered. It is something so vital to human space faring but not understood at all.

Every gate is identical to the extreme in detail and size. They are 10 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide. If Humans had ships so big, a shib 7 km high and wide could pass through the gate.

The strangest thing about them is that they are totally invisible to every type of sensor or reading device we have, they had to be spotted by visually. In the beginning probes was sent everywhere in a new system, but then a pattern was discovered after the third was found. There was always at least one gate in about the same orbit as the last planet in each system.

Each gate is made of a strange metallic alloy that have a brownish color, that looks like it had been through some acidic oxidation. Analyzes of the alloy is still not complete, but the metals that have identified is as of now only known to exist in the Ross Alpha system.

The exterior shell of each gate is all filled with the same kind of swirling pattern that repeats itself continuously. There seem to be no known quality to the pattern and is believed to be put there for aesthetic reasons only. The shell it self have only been sampled from the first Omnichron gate discovered. And the main researcher that gave it the name was Dr. Joergen Campell. The test showed that the shell casing was about 10 meters thick, and had no markings at all from any type of damage, even as it is about 100 000 years old as dating of the samples have shown. Th sampling took months as the alien alloy is the hardest known manufactured substance known to man.

There is one way in on each gate, always the same place, that leads into a small 8 by 8 meter room. Inside there is some kind of crystalline computer system. Only by using the power generated by a nuclear reactor hooked to the system was the computer panel activated, and then the gate just opened and went on automatic. No use of the computer system has done anything, and it looks like it have been fully secured against external tampering.

Every gate that has been found has been inactive, and once activated have created a permanent link to a gate on the other side, that must have been activated automatically by the energy surge from the phenomena connecting them. The energy have been untapped by human trials and is beyond our understanding of how physics works.

Theories about the phenomena is many: Some thinks its a wormhole, but most reject the idea as they believe it must have some sort of traveling time, while others think its a black hole of sorts. Whatever it is, it bends time, and makes it exist on many planes, and the same time on to places and therefor warps space around it. Hence the name - Omnichron = All Time.

As the accident on the first gate showed (the defense weapon misfire), the gates are near indestructible to the weapons used by us. Maybe they generate a forcefield in case of direct attack against them if something like that should happen, tapping right from the power that operates them. But as we at this moment cant scan them in any way, we have no answer for that.

But an even stranger mystery about the gates is that The Ship has one that is folded, and not even free floating. Is this ship something that travels the stars over periods of thousands of years and builds the gates on its way, to make the gate network ready? Or have it some other way to travel the stars as its immense size is to great for the gates themselves.

Those answers may be answered as our brave men and women on the joint operation ship The Daedalus arrives after an almost 6 month long journey, In just one week (first play session is in one week) they will start their operation that will last the better parts of 8 months.

The Daedalus is a converted Cruiser, 335 meters in length, and have a crew of 250, 200 of them is UNSC and the rest is from Aeon Technologies.

Though The Daedalus have been stripped of many weapon platforms to have space for more scientific equipment and personnel, it is still heavily armed as you may never know where pirates may appear.

The ships personnel is divided into several groups that is going to investigate the ship and they are again put into two main groups - Engineering and Scientific. Some of the best minds is out there: Physicists, Biologists, Archaeologists, Geologists, Mathematicians and so forth. And our brave marines is with them in case there are any danger that needs to be overcome.

The tech level, hm - Though my setting is some hard sci-fi, I do have some super tech (like the Gates) Just to mention that.

The tech level, well: The spaceship run on fusion energy, nothing more fancy then that. Of weapons the ships have lasers and slugthrowers, where big railguns are the heaviest weapon. Particle stream beams are in the R&D stages.

There are no artificial gravity plating, but most ships have at least a small rotating section.

If someone have seen the series: Defying Gravity, ships have something like that, but more realistically.

Biotech have been developed quite far. it is possible to clone body parts and graft on lost limbs, many months after they have been lost. Bioengineered cells is used in medicine to cure sickness like aids and cancer.

Artificial limbs, hearts, lungs etc, is almost not used anymore.

Communication have been slightly improved, but is still only as fast as radio waves. Computers have more organic parts in them, but functions in many ways as they do now. But screens and such are more interactive holograms.

Soldiers weapons are still slugthrowers, but the ammunition is much smaller and efficient. Gauss/Rail guns are still not effective enough in hard conditions because of the powersupply issues, but in R&D.

If you look at it at Gurps tech level, its mostly T9 with some tech bordering at T10

I have my squad of Fremen spiced up space marines ready for some spooky alien ship exploration.;)

Then I shall do a write up on the first sections on the inside of The Ship this coming week, thats accessible without using a whole week cutting through the plating.

There are stuff in there that is quite, spooky :)

If someone wonders, The Ship in Gurps terms is mostly T12 tech with many tings bordering past that too.
