Really? I know the tune, but I don't know that song's story.

It's about a lesbian love affair. Really.

On that note, Laura Branigan's "Gloria" and Garbage and Screaming Females's cover of "Because the Night" seem very fitting.

JAR-EEL
by Dolly Parton

Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel
I'm begging of you please don't take Boldhome
Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel
Please don't take it just because you can

Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And Argrath can’t compete with you
Jar-eel

He talks about you in his sleep
And there's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name
Jar-eel

And I can easily understand
How you could take Boldhome again
But you don't know what it means to me
Jar-eel

Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel

I'm begging of you please don't take Boldhome
Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel
Please don't take it just because you can

Your Empire’s rich with cities fair
In Dragon Pass there’s not much here:
Boldhome’s the only place for me
Jar-eel

I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do
Jar-eel

Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel

I'm begging of you please don't take Boldhome
Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel, Jar-eel
Please don't take it even though you can
Jar-eel, Jar-eel

The cover of the single is by Mark Smylie, of course: @M Helsdon was showing it off recently.

Lady in Black -> Red as Beat-Pot's story:

She came to me one morning,

one lonely crimson morning,

her red hair flowing in the battlefield wind.

I know not why she sought me,

for in madness I was walking

And destruction lay around me

From that fight I could not win

Ah ah ah...

etc

Hmmm, I would have suspected that Jar-Eel would swing both ways without hesitation or guilt. Lunars strike me as people not bothered by tiresome rules . . . any rules, really.

True.  Not as if Heortlings have strict rules in these matters either.

Just seems that the **first** song that comes to your mind about Jar-Eel should not be Joleen...  To each their own...

Even if I imagine (all the people) more her through Black Sabbath's "Iron (wo)man", the first thing that came to my mind reading this thread is, by the Beat(pot)les

Jar-Eel, ma belle
These are words that go together well
My Jar-Eel
Jar-Eel, ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble
Tres bien ensemble
I love you, I love you, I love you
That's all I want to say
Until I find a way
I will say the only words I know that you'll understand
Jar-Eel, ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble
Tres bien ensemble
I need to, I need to, I need to
I need to make you see
Oh, what you mean to me
Until I do, I'm hoping you will know what I mean
I love you
I want you, I want you, I want you
I think you…

Since we are stumbling onto the 3rd rail of human sexuality, it is Storm Khan's stated position that sexual preference is not a matter for ethical judgement in the real (or any) world. Anyone's choice of a partner is their business, and their business alone. The only issue I have with Lunars, as presented, is their willingness to weaponize chaos. That is a BIG issue, however.

TO BE CLEAR: the song "Jolene" is about a captivatingly beautiful woman with auburn hair, perfect skin, green eyes and a two-syllable name beginning with "J." Why would anyone think of Jar-eel the Razoress in that context? Beats me.

I considered altering the lyrics e.g. to describe her explicitly as "friendly and happy, clever and beautiful, holy and deadly" or to single out her "wry humour and pensive wit," but in the end I clove to the Gidlow principle: if the unmodified lyrics are already perfect, don't change a thing.

Back in your box, Dangerduck.

@Nick BrookeWhen asked by somebody else why Jolene, you did not reply "because it's about a beautiful woman" ... (generally matching Jar-Eel).  You gave a snarky reply, as anybody can see up above, because it's about a lesbian love affair.

I have nothing against people, imaginary or not, loving whom they please.  But if you ask 100 Gloranthans who Jar-Eel loves, 99 would say Beatpot.

Likewise, the great song "I'll be your Emmylou" does not sing about Johny Cash's affairs, it describes him and June Cash.  Emmylou Harris and Graham Parsons probably had other lovers, but it describes them.

A love song about Jar-Eel should be focused on her and Beatpot.

"I don't know that song's story."

"That song" = Jolene.
