A couple questions about Runequest?

Hello friends,

I have a 2 questions (I still have yet to play Runequest, and I am just learning.):

1) Is Heroquest a game you can play within a Runequest campaign, or does it have to be played as a separate game?

2) If Runequest is a very deadly game, and the characters take hours to role-up, do you tend to go through a lot of characters and have to make new ones often, or do they not die often, because you often avoid conflict because it's more dangerous?

 Thank You, Zulfikar Zaban

1. Heroquest is a separate gaming system. Though there are mythical reenactments in the setting of Glorantha, which is integral to the new RuneQuest, which are known as HeroQuests. This can sometimes get confusing for newcomers.

2. If you fight, tilt the odds in your favor: ambushes, magic, etc. Also, there's no shame in pounding sand if  things get too hairy.

Following allenowen's point for 2, the system and setting both encourage alternative forms of combat resolution not necessarily as readily available in something like D&D, or even CoC. You can challenge the opposing champion to a duel, apply to be captured instead of killed because your kin will pay ransom, remind them you belong to X cult/group/clan/tribe and invoke protection or retribution. It can work for most of the threats in the game. Even some chaostic opponents are reasonable and intelligent enough to not desire complete destruction over a rout.

"Heroquesting" is a thing that Gloranthans do, it's travelling to the mythical world and taking part in the events of the God Time before Time and Causality and Entropy entered the world. There have been several sets of rules for extending previous RuneQuest game system editions to better cover this kind of adventure, and there will be rules for RQG coming "soon".

There is a role-playing game called "HeroQuest", first released as "Hero Wars" due to trademark law, now called "QuestWorlds" or somesuch. This is a very different game system to RuneQuest, more suited to higher levels of power involved when you do serious Heroquesting to get godly powers and items.

So the answer is, which of these uses of the term "Heroquest" were you asking about, and has thus answered your question?

All the above answers are correct but...
Not, yet but there is a long rumoured HeroQuest rules coming to RuneQuest. This year? Until then Simon Phipps has a Jonstown Compendium product looking at the secrets of HeroQuesting available here

Do your homework, and find out as much about your enemy as you can before encountering them. Find out what they might want more than your death. Negotiate, plan  and attack from advantage, runaway, find allies...many possibilities exist for lengthening a life span. Of course a good diet, great spouse, university educat.... right, wind it up... ok... so don’t adventure, key to a long and quiet life.
