Where is the Brown Sea?

Recommended Posts

The Brown Sea is a sea covering parts of the lands called Somelz in the later part of the Storm Age, an area of Mostali domination that devastated whichever lifeforms that happened to be there at the start of the project. The square land of Somelz was broken up in the Breaking of the World, but due to the special nature of the Magnetic Mountain not by a vertical trench like under the three Doom Currents, but more like a chip hewn off of the surface, causing Slon to glide off into the west. The dwarf reclamation project has started to pull back this part of the split earth cube into its original position, which is going to swallow up and destroy the Sea of Worms and the two swamps separating Slon from continental Pamaltela, and parts of the realm claimed by Terthinus. The same project will elevate the sea bottom of the Brown Sea, and recreate Somelz. Other such measures on the dry land are just now carried into the western parts of coastal Umathela and the Enkloso forest.

West of the Brown Sea comes Banthe Sea, which receives a current from the Hudaro Ocean on the western border of the Inner World (inside Luathela, west of Jrustela). Beyond that comes the infinite expanse of Sramak's River and the edge of the Sky Dome, where the waters collect that run up the Celestial River. (It is not known whether that scooping up of water has slowed the rotation of the Sky Dome.)

The Godtime maps show an archipelago of the Heron Hegemony in these parts. There might be echoes of that waiting to be discovered, although the very straight western shore of Slon suggests that this is indeed the sharp end of the Earth Cube, and any islands or other solid ground outside of this would be floating on the water -or sitting on coral-like outgrowths of the earth cube, o of the Underworld sky bowl.

Hic sunt dracones.

Sorry, but you're wrong. In ancient charts :

West = Hic sunt monstrorum

East = Hic sunt draconis

South = Hic sunt leones (for Middle-Ages christians, lions were devil-creatures)

North = no specific latin sentence. No need. No one would dare.

I knew most of the European aristocracy were Satanists. More like Richard DEMONheart!

And heraldry also uses sirens, wolves, snakes, griffins, dragons...

Specialists (dungeoneers?) are still looking for shields with painted kobolds, goblins and trolls.

Funny you should mentioned that. I needed to know where the sea was because that is one of the locations mentioned for placing Griffin Island if playing in Glorantha and my version has kobolds, goblins and trolls there.

If I recall, the general idea was that Griffin Island would be somewhat north/northwest of Slon, otherwise it gets too close to Jrustela.  And since Luathela is a somewhat mythic place, partially into the Hero Plane/Outer World, that works ok.

Yeap, that's where I put it. Here the actual post:

The island is located in the Brown Sea, otherwise known as the Kerenth Sea, north of Slon and west of Jurstela.
What? You say you do not see an island there? Is there .... just left of the edge.
