Final Update: Jonstown Compendium Index - 2021

Updated again, with The Temple of Heads, an exquisitely-detailed Thanatari temple complex in Dorastor, Land of Doom. Written by Leon Kirshtein and Simon Phipp with Nikk Effingham and Tal Meta, this is the first in a projected Holiday Dorastor series, expanding on the iconic locations of Glorantha's nastiest Chaos Nest. As you'd expect, there are dungeon complexes, Rune-level leaders and their henchlings, new monsters, magic items, spells, cults, sorcery... plus four short scenarios and innumerable adventure hooks. If you liked RQ3's Dorastor: Land of Doom and Simon Phipp's Secrets of Dorastor, this will be right up your alley.

Updated again with Anders Tönnberg's Balazar Maps: six versions of one of the regional maps from Griffin Mountain. There are three base maps (Players' Map, GM Map and Secrets Map), each presented with and without five-mile hexes. Each map's resolution is only 2133x1200 pixels, so the small-print place-names are pretty much illegible (much like those in the Argan Argar Atlas), but the maps have been beautifully executed in Wonderdraft in two different styles and the set is only €5.50. I hope the creator can update this to a higher resolution to fix the only major issue with this release.

Balazar Maps update: I gave some constructive feedback to Anders and he's doubled the resolution of his maps, which are now 4,266 x 2400 pixels: much tastier. Here's the same section, now with 4x as many pixels.

Updated again, with Close Encounters of the Sartar Kind, @Manimati's fairly old-school random encounter tables for Sartar. Eleven terrain types, 36 encounter categories, no names, no specials, no stat-blocks. Quite pricey (at over $1.80 for less than nine pages), but I suppose it does what it says on the tin and it's less than two bucks. If you need random encounter tables for Sartar, these will tide you over until the boxed set drops.

Updated again, with High Rock Hill, a political conspiracy that kicks off at a vineyard near Clearwine and has a couple of surprising twists. Includes playtest notes with advice on adjusting the pace and flexing outcomes based on players' choices. (If anyone can put me in touch with the author, Bastian Haefner, I'd appreciate it - there's a few small typos that would be easy to clear up)

Updated again, with Davide Quatrini's GLORANTHA: the search for the Throne of Colymar, a slim scenario outline (2 1/4 pages) from the author of Trinkets from Dragon Pass. To quote his previous title's reviewers: "it's a little disappointing"; "there's not much there for your dollar." If this sounds like something you'd like, you can see the first page of the scenario in the full-sized preview on DriveThruRPG and decide for yourself. (The rest is a quarter-page random encounter table, a half-page site map and half a page outlining the occupants of Colymar's old house).

Updated again, with Anders Tönnberg's Elder Wilds Maps: the logical sequel to his lovely Balazar Maps, this is a set of seven high-resolution pictorial maps of the Elder Wilds from Griffin Mountain. Drawn in two styles (simple for the Players, colourful for the GM), three levels of detail (Players, Game Master, Secrets), in five-mile-hex and non-hex formats, plus a seventh Political map showing where the Elder Races live (hex-only).

I've also plugged my two-volume Glorantha Manifesto, to inform Jonstown Compendium customers who aren't on Facebook or this forum. It's FREE, per Chaosium's generous Fan Material Policy -- I wasn't going to put in any effort to thematically link my old essays to playable content for one of Chaosium's Gloranthan RPGs, so we felt they didn't belong on the Jonstown Compendium. @MOB kindly approved the inclusion of several quotes from Greg Stafford in excess of what would have been permissible under the Fan Material Policy. Here are the links: Volume One (58 pages), Volume Two (60 pages).

Updated again, with Davide Quatrini's Rivers of Blood, another short scenario outline (2.5 pages), this time about a mad chaos dwarf. Forty cents per page, and no preview this time. Caveat emptor.

Updated again, with Austin Conrad's latest Rune Master, Ehnval Tallspear.

I've also moved Davide Quatrini's GLORANTHA titles (Trinkets and the two scenario outlines) to their own section at the back, to avoid confusion: they are unlike anything else on the Jonstown Compendium (being: very short, pricey for what you get, and generally poorly rated), and this seems the best way to reflect their egregious nature.

Updated again, as Simon Phipp's Secrets of Dorastor is now available as a print-on-demand hardcover: 244 pages for $45.

The print edition uses the beautiful RQ3-style layout by Master Gollum, and represents a step-change in PDF-to-POD conversion efficiency: although the digital edition wasn't laid out using particularly sophisticated software, I was able to prepare it for the rigours of print-on-demand (meeting CMYK ink limits, including outside bleeds, etc.) using various shenanigans I'm always happy to discuss on the Jonstown Compendium Creators' Circle Facebook group.

Updated again with another of Davide Quatrini's minimalist scenario outlines, A Grim Pilgrimage: two and a half pages for $1.10. I've saved some space by compacting their descriptions, as all three are much of a muchness:

Quote

These minimalist scenario outlines will need work to flesh out. Some thought has gone into the scenario hooks (see the full-size preview of Search for the Throne of Colymar for a complete example), but beyond that there is at most a ¼ page random encounter table, possibly one ¼ page statblock, a ½ page Dyson Logos map, and a ½ page list of dungeon inhabitants. If that’s worth a dollar to you, go for it.

Complexity: low for staging/effort, but you’ll need to do the prep.

Characters: default RQG adventurers.

A Grim Pilgrimage features a haunted Daka Fal shrine; Rivers of Blood is about a mad chaos dwarf; Search for the Throne of Colymar is about retrieving a favourite chair.

Updated again (34th time this year), with a few things that came out while I was on holiday last week:

Plus news! The Company of the Dragon is an Electrum best-seller, and heading for print. Yozarian's Bandit Ducks is out now in print! And premium colour print prices are due to rise "dramatically" (DriveThruRPG's words, not mine) on 1 July, so buy your books now to get them in premium quality.

Updated again (35th time this year), with another of Davide Quatrini's rough scenario ideas.

  • Spirit Hunt: a minimalist scenario outline featuring an evil spirit hiding in a cave that apparently used to be a famous Lunar outlaw's den in the hills of Esrolia. Sure. 2 1/4 pages of rough notes for a dollar: it's your money, I suppose.

Updated again (36th time this year), with our first Japanese title: コリマ―の玉座を求めて. It's a translation by Ashinoha of Davide Quatrini's minimalist scenario outline, Search for the Throne of Colymar.

In unrelated news, I hear that the text for the Japanese edition of A Rough Guide to Glamour is now 90% complete, and the first of the new artwork I've seen looks AWESOME. As ever, the translation team has carte blanche from us to change any artwork or text for their market: it makes for better books, while meaning nobody has to suffer translating in-jokes and puns, and we love the conversations and results that ensue.

Updated again (37th time this year), with Davide Quatrini's shortest scenario outline yet:

  • A Trek in the Marsh: a minimalist scenario outline featuring a necromantic rod in the Upland Marsh. 2 pages of rough notes for a dollar. No random encounter table and no statblock, this time. Enjoy!

Also! The DriveThruRPG Premium Colour Print Sale is now on -- all of the Jonstown Compendium's premium colour print-on-demand titles are available at a 25% discount for the next week or so, until the printers dramatically increase the cost of this format on 1 July. This is your last chance to buy these books in the best available quality for the lowest prices ever!

Updated again, with Austin's latest Rune Master of the Month: Grungnak Fearless, a brutal Death Lord of Zorak Zoran.

But wait! There's more! The premium colour sale is over, the premium colour price hike has happened, and new standard colour editions of many print-on-demand titles are now available. Full details are in the Index: please note that the prices of premium colour books may be adjusted further by creators: that price hike was crudely implemented by robots, and it may be that us humans have a better idea of how things should end up.

Standard colour printing is flatter and fuzzier than the crisp, deep, rich premium colours we’re used to, as you’d expect from a cheaper format, but the books are perfectly serviceable if you don’t mind the loss of print quality. The photograph below shows a side-by-side comparison of the print quality (standard colour on the left, premium on the right). You'll see that the red of the Red Moon isn't as deep, the colours look somewhat flatter (check out the differences in how the detailed pattern on Glamour's veil and dress show up), but in my opinion the quality overall is fine for a 'cheaply printed' version.

If you just bought our books in June’s 25% off premium print sale, please note that these new editions cost more (about 10% less than the old premium prices) and are more cheaply printed than the ones you acquired: congratulations, you got yourself a real bargain, there!

It is more expensive for creators to offer multiple print formats: there is no guarantee that any future titles will be available in both standard and premium colour print.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Updated 4 July: Jonstown Compendium Index - 2021

Updated again, with the Beer With Teeth collective's return to the Colymar tribal capital: Cups of Clearwine, detailing a small corner of the middle city, considerably more up-market than the Dregs, and fleshing out the everyday lives of the residents of Sandy Corner (or “Elisanda’s Grove,” as older and more aspirational locals still call it). Every household comes with a big box of plot-hooks, profiles inc. RQG stat-blocks for the more interesting residents, and insights into what makes these people tick and how they all get along (or not). A wonderfully-imagined community for your adventurers to visit, complete with price lists, bronze age crafting tips, and gorgeous illustrations. 63 pages in PDF format for $10.00.

Updated again, with Holiday Dorastor: Spider Woods by Simon Phipp & Leon Kirshtein, detailing the inhabitants of Spider Woods in Dorastor: spiderlings, arachnaurs, giant spiders and worse. There are rules for creating spiderkin adventurers, tasty cuisine, and a campaign arc for adventurers who want to learn to live with the denizens. As with the first Holiday Dorastor title, this is an ideal companion to Secrets of Dorastor or RQ3’s Dorastor: Land of Doom. There are detailed suggestions for integrating this book's five scenarios with the adventure seeds from Dorastor: Land of Doom; three of them include heroquests.

Updated again, with a two-page Davide Quatrini minimalist scenario outline, Underwater Quest. No random encounter table and no statblocks: 50 cents gets you a flooded dungeon map (from Dyson Logos), plus a hook to get you there and some suggested inhabitants. The author notes that you'll need the RQ Classic Gateway Bestiary to get the most out of this, as it uses monsters you won't find anywhere else.

Updated again, with Alakoring's Legacy: like its predecessor Heort's Legacy, this gives variant HeroQuestWorldWars clan creation questionnaires, this time for northern Orlanthi (Tarsh and Aggar) and Tusk Rider characters.

There's also a Japanese translation of Davide Quatrini's Trinkets from Dragon Pass by Ashinoha: ドラゴン・パスの小物・装身具

Updated again, with Davide Quatrini's The Avengers of Earth Temple. Two pages of minimalist scenario notes for $0.50 (no stats, no random encounter table); you'll need the Call of Cthulhu supplement Ye Booke of Monstres II for the monster stats.

Updated again, with Joel Kumpulainen @Jokum's Night in the Meadow and other spirit encounters: three short pastoral encounters that each kick off while herders watch their flocks by night. They do a good job of introducing non-combat skills and Gloranthan weirdness, and can be resolved imaginatively. While they're written for new players, it would be straightforward to involve non-herder adventurers (e.g. as the first people the NPC herders turn to for help), and to ramp up the challenge posed by each encounter.

Updated again, with Anders Tonnberg's maps of the South Pelorian Highlands. You know the drill by now: the package contains four high-resolution maps (Players', Game Master's, Detail, Political), each available in hex or non-hex versions, yours for 5 euros (c.$5.89).

I'm also making a noise about the Jonstown Compendium's two ENnie nominated titles on the front cover - voting opens to the general public tomorrow, runs for a week, and we'd really appreciate your support for A Rough Guide to Glamour and  Citizens of the Lunar Empire in the Best Organized Play category. (The ENnies use a ranked preferential vote, meaning you can support both titles)
