Okay, two weeks of posts were sacrificed to the Gods of Open Source. Do we get something in exchange for the sacrifice? Divine magic? A skill? A special ability?

That's what we get: Better appreciation of the smileys we always had!

Britain has been infiltrated by soviet agents to the highest levels. They control the BBC, the main political party leaderships, NHS & local council executives, much of the police, most newspapers and the utility companies. Of course the EU is theirs, through-and-through. And they are among us - a pervasive evil, like Stasi.

As someone who has done a fair number of software upgrades on client sites, the following are important:

1. Only upgrade if it is completely essential, or if the client has paid for it, not just for upgrading's sake

2. Always take a full backup beforehand and test that the backup works before continuing

3. Make sure that minor things are included in the backup

4. Perform the upgrade on a copy of the system first to see if it all works

5. 20-20 Hindsight is always better than the upgrade itself

Still, at least most of it is still working, which is always a plus.

Well, it wasn't completely essential, but I enjoy the potential of the CMS, being able to drop a couple of add-ons for functions that now are included and having software that's compatible with whatever new they put out. Still, an element of upgrading "for the fun of it" was probably present.

2. Always take a full backup beforehand and test that the backup works before continuing

Took some backups, but they got corrupted in the back and forth of the upgrade process. I'm not sure how it happened, but cetainly need to be more careful with that part next time.

3. Make sure that minor things are included in the backup

I think I got that one.

4. Perform the upgrade on a copy of the system first to see if it all works

Yes, this one broke down a bit. I wasn't able to set up a test-site, and in the end my impatience got the better of me.

5. 20-20 Hindsight is always better than the upgrade itself

Yup, and while I probably could have waited until most of the bugs had been sorted out, I'm quite happy with the upgrade. :)

Not really a bug, just an idea based upon the fact that I am somewhat lazy:

If one could access the "What's New ?" page of the forum without having to

log in, one could take a look at the new posts and then decide whether to

log in ...

I don't think that's an option, probably because of the increased server load it would result in. But you could just click the "stay logged in" box before logging in, if your browser saves cookies.

Trif's the client here not us. He just lets us play in his sandbox too! (Thanks for that, trif!) If he's happy, that's what counts.

Your humble forum slave have just had some thoughts about how the appearance of the old site can be implemented with the new software. Last version I just removed the entire header and exchange it with a html coded one. With the new one, too much php-coded functionality is placed there, so I couldn't do that, which have somewhat delayed the work on the design. But now I have some ideas. I'll try to implement them this coming weekend. :)

Where's the Wiki?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Coming back soon, allegedly. And implemented in something called "CMS", which should make it even better!

Ehh... Around 2 weeks? It's not highest on the priority list.

...and that was a week ago, so...?

Heck, have those downloads changed address again??

Trif, if you must change them, please announce it so I can fix the links in my sigs on those other forums...

... but please don't change 'em if you can possibly avoid it!

The Wiki had most of the information on the shared world - I was just going to reference it when I noticed it's gone. :(

Still there... Not for long though.

Actually, it's only the content that will be transferred over to the CMS at first, to make it accessible. It won't be a true "wiki" before someone makes a wiki-widget for the CMS, which might take some time. Poeple used the first wiki, as the registration and wysiwyg was the same as the rest of the forum, but when that lost all support and the new wiki was installed, allmost no-one used it. Which is why I'm waiting for a new wiki feature for the CMS.

Faulty rewrite rule. Can you check your links again? Is it working now?

You can't get enough of a good thing. :)

I don't blame Triff, I blame the gremlins. But, since no one's written up BRP stats for gremlins, we can't beat them.

Fair enough. I updated my links to http://basicroleplaying.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=307 (the old version had "/forum/" in the middle, IIRC), so it works now, ta.

PS: Woo-hoo! 8 more downloads! My time put in over on other forums may be paying off! (Still a bit miffed about the ~250 lost off the count, tho'). Maybe now momentum will be regained...

I'd suggest a black headline on the main page. The two tone, with "Central" in white, along with the "menu" options get a bit lost right now.

The "menu" options, or top links, won't change their color. It's a known bug which will be fixed when vB 4.0.2 is released February 4th.

Conscerning a black headline, the "CENTRAL" part of it gets even more lost than it is now.
