Another thing to note about the Atreides being caught with their pants down is that they didn't expect the attack to come so soon. IIRC, Leto and Thufir thought the emperor would wait until the spice production fell below acceptable levels due to the shoddy equipment the Atreides were left with, which would give the Harkonens a reasonable case before the Lansraad. Instead, the attack was launched mere days after the Atreides arrived.

I finally saw the movie and allowed myself to read this thread 🙂

I really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how similar some scenes were to the Lynch version. Probably because those scenes were well-described in the book. I loved the ornithopters and the rendering of Arrakeen. I did find the music a bit too loud at times (though I saw it in IMAX, so it could be just that it was turned up to 11) and overwhelmed the dialogue on at least one occasion.
