Recommended Posts

The Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 is Nick Brooke's index to new RuneQuest & Glorantha scenarios and sourcebooks (and sundry other resources) available from Chaosium's Jonstown Compendium community content web store on DriveThruRPG. The index includes full details for every product released after 1 October 2021, plus summary listings for everything else in the store (for full details of all 2020 & 2021 releases, see the Jonstown Compendium Catalogue 2021 or previous years' indexes).

Detailed listings analyse content (pages split between scenario, stats, maps, etc.), characters, settings and complexity of each scenario. Includes best-seller and ratings charts, RuneQuest Scenarios, Glorantha Sourcebooks, QuestWorld Resources, Shorter Releases (inc. maps, tokens, artpacks and random stuff), three Where in the World? maps showing every scenario, sourcebook and regional map's location, and notes on when scenarios and campaigns are set (by year and season, inc. Chaosium RQG scenarios).

The index will be regularly updated following major releases in 2022. All updates in 2022 are free; the price of the index may increase quarterly as new content grows, so don't wait too long to get on board! If you bought it earlier, get the current version of the Index from your Library on DriveThruRPG, or from the product page while you're logged in.

The index comes bundled with a spreadsheet listing all major releases inc. price, page-count, medals, etc. for your convenience (updated through 31-Dec-2021) and with two charts showing the sales history of all major Jonstown Compendium titles to 31-Dec-2021.

NOTE: Material indexed in this book may deal with mature themes. GMs are advised to adjust their presentation of this subject matter in accordance with their own and their group’s comfort levels.

  • 3 weeks later...

There have been three community content releases since the 2022 Index went on sale, but nothing yet feels big enough to be worth an update:

  • Creatures of Glorantha, by Davide Quatrini: $1.49 for 5.5 pages / 7 new bestiary entries, illustrated with public domain or creative commons licensed art.
  • Erigia, by Mikael Mansen: $13.50 for two high-resolution maps of Eol and Erigia, the homelands of two Lunar allies: the Thunder Delta Slingers and the brutal Char-un.
  • Men of the West, by Martin Helsdon: now available in a hardcover B&W print-on-demand edition, $27.00 for 182 pages on the Malkioni West (Fronela, Seshnela, Ralios and Slontos).121951316_MenoftheWest4.thumb.jpg.72a63fe413e61eb9264bcd52761fcb00.jpg

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 28 March 2022

I've updated the Jonstown Compendium Index to include the various products (maps, tokens, cardboard counters and shorter titles) released since the first version this year; there still haven't been any major releases. Recent titles of note are:

I greatly look forward to meeting some of you at Chaosium Con in Ann Arbor next month. There's a Community Content panel on Friday morning (Try This At Home), and a "Happy Hour" breakfast event on Saturday morning (Meet & Greet Fellow Community Content Creators), and I'll always be happy to chat if you catch me at a loose end.

Updated again, with Drew Baker's Highways & Byways - A Wayfarer's Companion. Inspired by the RuneQuest Starter Set map of Northern Sartar, Drew has produced this detailed collection of route maps and traveller’s guides around south-east Dragon Pass. As well as a plethora of hex-maps and tables of travel times and distances, this contains a short description of every major and minor route in the region, from the majestic Royal Roads of Sartar to the smallest trails in the back of beyond. 107 pages, $10.95 digital (PDF).

I won't update the index for this, but the phenomenally-capable Ashinoha has translated Austin Conrad @Crel's scenario The Throat of Winter, one of the Jonstown Compendium's launch titles, into Japanese (冬の喉笛), making it the sixth Japanese-language title in our community content store.

Updated again, with The Six Paths - Gender among the Heortlings by Edan Jones, beautifully illustrated by Katrin Dirim. This short sourcebook (28 pages) looks at the exceptional gender roles recognised by the Orlanthi barbarians, and contains cults and stats for both RuneQuest and QuestWorlds. Cults: Heler, Nandan, Vinga (three pages each). Six sample characters illustrating Glorantha's rich diversity have a description, RQ & QW stats and full-length portrait. It's "Pay What You Want," with a suggested price of $4.00, and it's well worth that.

Meanwhile, cartographer Mikael Mansen has produced a gorgeous map of the Mountains of Shadow (Halikiv) and another Gloranthan Settlement (16 so far), this time with a desert oasis ambience. While I think of it, here's the map from my Index showing which regions of Genertela have been mapped in community content.  1548428526_GenertelaMaps.thumb.png.d4366a9e6bdf9f422077540d0d7a8f6e.png

Updated again with Josh "Skull" Dixon's Lost in the Dark, a new kind of darkness spirit and a related adventure seed including colourful local encounters for adventurers who get lost in the dark on the road from Apple Lane to Clearwine.

In other news, Edan Jones & Katrin Dirim's The Six Paths went Copper in a day (despite being Pay What You Want), and I'm hard at work preparing a print-on-demand edition. Also, I've briefly pulled the printed version of The Duel at Dangerford from sale while I wait for a proof-print of the new Deluxe Edition, inc. Japanese artwork by Mr Kaga.

Updated again, with a few small tweaks:

  • The Duel at Dangerford (deluxe edition) is available in print, discounted to $5.95 for the rest of this month! (The original version was $8.95, and had fewer pages)
  • The Six Paths is now a Silver best-seller, despite being Pay What You Want! Also, the digital file has been significantly enhanced (higher-resolution artwork), and a print edition is being prepared. Chaosium and the author are donating all their royalties from this title to charity, and if you picked it up for free we encourage you to donate what you would have paid to your local LGBT+ charity.
  • Best-seller charts updated for several recent  ratings! (Remember, the Index is updated more frequently than my free downloadable charts of the Best-Selling RuneQuest Scenarios and Gloranthan Sourcebooks

If you've enjoyed any of your community content purchases, please consider leaving a rating or even a short review on DriveThruRPG: authors and artists really appreciate feedback, and it helps other potential customers decide what to buy.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 24 May 2022

Updated again on 24 May with Day's Rest by Jamie Revell. $4.00 buys you a 24-page mini-sandbox setting that details one of the Praxian oases closest to Sartar, the first stop along Caravan Alley and a particularly holy place for the cult of Waha the Butcher. Fourteen fully-statted NPCs with detailed backgrounds (the Bison Tribe overlords, their Oasis Folk slaves and a handful of resident outsiders) bring the setting to life. The last five pages provide a general overview of the easily-overlooked Oasis Folk society, rounded off with character generation guidelines for both RuneQuest and QuestWorlds. Illustrated throughout with public-domain pictures of buffaloes and palm trees. Waha!

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 30 May 2022

Updated again on 30 May with Mikael Mansen's Glorantha Up Close: Jonstown Area Map. $7.50 buys you a set of three poster map files (with-text, no-text and winter snow versions) showing the Jonstown region in great detail. The map covers much of the Colymar, Malani, Dinacoli, Cinsina and Culbrea tribal lands. It's executed in the same style as his regional area maps, with "realistic" rugged terrain, forests and scattered trees, etc., looking rather like a satellite view of Glorantha. Resolution is c. 4,300 x 3,040 pixels, or roughly 14 x 10 inches at 300 DPI.

The cartographer is keen to work with other creators, so if you need some high-quality maps for your own Jonstown products (or for any other purpose), why don't you contact him at https://www.mikaelsmaps.com ?

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 5 June 2022

Updated again on 5 June with Diana Probst & Kristi Herbert's The Lifethief, a sequel to Beer With Teeth's earlier releases Stone and Bone and The Gifts of Prax (aka Stonier and Bonier). This gorgeously-illustrated adventure sends a party into one of the worst places in the world, where something terrible is happening. An appendix of Praxian encounters rounds things off nicely. $10.00 for 47 pages.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 7 June 2022

Updated again on 7 June with Michael Paul O'Sullivan's Velhara's Mirror, a sandbox campaign exploring tumultuous events in Beast Valley after the Dragonrise. Presented as a sequel to The Ruins of Bonn Kanach, this outlines the many factions contending for power in the south of Dragon Pass. Six two-page adventure outlines present events in 1627 where the adventurers can get involved, making friends or enemies with any of the factions, while the title scenario is a ten-page adventure that takes place during the Great Hunt at the end of Storm Season.

The separate 46-page NPC Roster is an excellent collection of RuneQuest stat blocks for Sun Domers, Kitori, Trolls, Lunars, Sartarites, Beast Men, Grazelanders, Esrolians and Wolf Pirates, as well as NPC adventurers and some scenario-specific creatures. $6.99 for 86 pages.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 13 June 2022

Updated again on 13 June with Ludovic Chabant & Austin Conrad's Bog Struggles, a short and colourful adventure, charmingly illustrated, giving adventurers a chance to interact with a newtling village. A vivid and memorable combat scene is nicely book-ended with suggested introductions and aftermaths. This could be set in any wetlands where newtlings might live. $3.00 for 25 pages. (Note also that Ludovic's first scenario A Short Detour is currently on sale, reduced from $6.95 to $5.00)

Also, a quick heads-up. Printing costs will go up next month… [EDIT: the print cost hike has been cancelled, following negotiations between OneBookShelf and Lightning Source]

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 16 June 2022

Updated on 16 June with Scott Crowder's Pirates of the East Isles, Vol.1, the first instalment of a three-part campaign set in the exotic East Isles. Character creation supports adventurers from six islands and the race of keets; four pages of Family History set up the status quo in 1625, as the oceans open, the Pirate King rises, and a dread curse is lifted from Mokato. The book contains new rules for martial arts, 14 short-form cults, and a description of the Pirate Island of Pregezora and its leading personalities. The three scenarios are a piratical odyssey stopping at many of the islands and two shorter encounters. The campaign is intended for native East Isles adventurers, familiar with local myths, as all-foreign parties will miss a lot of what's going on. $15.00 for 125 pages.

Also released: Dario Corallo's ArtPack 4, a collection of illustrations for use in community content titles. €15.00 for 40 clipart pictures: purchasers can use these in Jonstown Compendium titles in exchange for credit and a free PDF. (And if you want an image altered to meet your needs, he'll be happy to do that for you)

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 4 July 2022

Updated on 4 July with Neil Gibson & Drew Baker's DuckPac Book 1: Lore, Legends & Myths. The first volume in a projected four-book set that sets out to reconsider and indeed redeem the accursed race from being relegated to cartoonish comic relief or shunned entirely. Art is consistently good and production values are high, with Mark Baldwin’s anatomical diagrams and tragic eviscerations on a par with anything from Trollpak. Well worth a look, as a serious attempt to ground the flightless. $5.99 for 51 pages (PDF); it's already a Copper best-seller!

Also updated the Print on Demand News to note The Red Deer Saga, collecting Paul Baker's Namoldin Clan tales White Stone Ruin, Elgar's Blade and A Sword Turned Inward into a huge hardcover tome. $27.98 for 334 pages (B&W hardcover).

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 16 July 2022

Updated on 16 July with Paul Baker's short scenario A Brazen Visage. Originally written as a Call of Cthulhu investigation, adventurers follow strange goings-on in the Arfritha Vale as an ancient evil awakens. While this could be played after the Red Deer Saga, it's a standalone scenario, and would be easy to relocate. Note that this scenario’s pages are half the size of most Jonstown Compendium publications (it’s formatted as A5, circa 6”x8”, not US Letter 8.5”x11”). $6.00 for 50 A5 pages.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 17 July 2022

Updated on 17 July with Brian Duguid's The Children of Hykim. This book (written by the co-founder of Tales of the Reaching Moon magazine) is a magisterial examination of the many Hsunchen beast-totem tribes of Genertela. After a thirty-page overview of general Hsunchen traits, the main body of the book sets out unusual features of twenty-one tribes, covering their myths, way of life, magic and totem animal statistics. A dozen pages at the back provide guidelines for creating Hsunchen adventurers and scenario/campaign suggestions. Thirty pages of vigorously footnoted and cross-referenced appendices show the depth of the author’s obsession and research. The book’s human-created artwork brings the setting to life, while every tribe is illustrated with AI-generated, somewhat psychedelic god-beast imagery. This book is creative, original, respectful of its sources (which are drawn from all ages of Gloranthan publication, but especially the Guide to Glorantha and Armies & Enemies of Dragon Pass), but never afraid to argue for its own vision, and tell the reader why. Highly recommended. $16.99 for 159 pages.

In other news, Martin Helsdon's The Armies & Enemies of Dragon Pass is now a Platinum best-seller, with over 1,000 copies sold!

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 4 August 2022

Updated on 4 August with two new adventures and some print news. The Storytelling Collective's "Write Your First Adventure" workshop ran all through July, and for the first time it included a RuneQuest stream (disclaimer: I adapted Paul Fricker's excellent Call of Cthulhu lessons for the new stream, deleting cosmic horror and inserting bronze age heroism throughout). Here are the first two adventures by proud graduates of the programme:

  • An Orlanthi Wedding by Ian Straus gives an Orlanthi adventurer a chance to woo and win his very own Sweet Green Woman over the course of several short seasonal episodes and an impromptu heroquest. $1.00 for 13 pages.
  • The Lottery by Robert Stoll sees a party of foreigners encountering a sinister cult with apocalyptic designs in Lunar Tarsh. Content Warning: incarceration, cannibalism and human sacrifice. (If that doesn't bring them running, I don't know what will). $3.00 for 31 pages.

Dario Corallo's remaster of Devin Cutler's scenario The Howling Tower is now available in print: $6.95 for 34 pages, standard colour softcover.

Somewhere outside the stead, a wolf howls...

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 6 August 2022

Updated on 6 August with DuckPac Book 2: Duck Adventurers, by Drew Baker & Neil Gibson. The second volume of DuckPac is dedicated to creating duck adventurers and a guide to the Durulz tribe. It includes new Family History events, the traditional voices (shaman and leader), notes on playing as a duck (e.g. cowardice, weapon and armour choices, how to function underwater), a detailed duck village with several fully-statted NPCs that could serve as a home base, and two in-character accounts of the surrounding lands. $10.99 for 93 pages, and gorgeously illustrated.

Updated on 7 August with The Seven Tailed Wolf by Andrew Logan Montgomery. The sequel to Six Seasons in Sartar and The Company of the Dragon concludes the story of the Haraborn Clan. Its six chapters play through the tumultuous events of 1626 S.T., the year after the Dragonrise, to tell the tale of the Company’s resettlement of Black Stag Vale... and the vengeance that followed them home. $18.95 for 130 pages.

  • Nick Brooke changed the title to Jonstown Compendium Index 2022 - updated 21 August 2022

Updated on 21 August with DuckPac Book 3: Redfeather Dreaming, by Drew Baker & Neil Gibson. The third volume of DuckPac is a traditional solo adventure, a dreamquest for doom-seeking ducks. Gorgeously presented, and illustrated with evocative AI-created art (but no new duck pics, alas!), this classic SoloQuest has 326 numbered paragraphs, plus 33 pages of Upland Marsh encounters. There's an innovative Journey Tracker scoresheet, notes on adapting the adventure for 1:1 play, and you can pick up one of the pregenerated Duck characters from DuckPac 2 as your first adventurer. $15.99 for 138 pages.

Chaosium has kindly allowed me to share more granular sales information. Each product's sales are now given in brackets of 50 up to Gold Best-Sellers, in brackets of 100 thereafter. For example, while all Silver best-sellers used to say "101+ sold," they are now listed in three tiers, as "over 100 / 150 / 200 sold." This detail is provided for those products released since 1 October 2021 and detailed in the Index, but because I think it's interesting, here's a round-up for all of the Jonstown Compendium's Platinum and Gold best-sellers:

And, finally, a skateboarding duck Mikael Mansen has mapped the Skyreach Mountains in close-up detail. $5.45 for three maps (labelled, unlabelled, close-up).

And updated again with Holiday Dorastor: Woods of Terror, by Simon Phipp and Leon Kirshtein. The fourth major Holiday Dorastor supplement covers Poisonthorn Wood and Hellwood, two of the deadliest places in Dorastor, home to xenophobic and chaos-tainted Aldryami respectively. The book contains gazetteers and prominent personalities for both woods, character generation details for twisted Aldryami (elves, dryads, runners, pixies and voralans), plus the usual grab-bag of shortform cults, magic items, spells, monsters, etc. The setting is presented as a sandbox, with five fleshed-out and 13 one-page scenarios the GM can mix and match to create a campaign, plus random encounter tables and a suggested campaign arc. $17.00 for 123 pages.
