Nevala’s Runes

What are Nevala’s runes? She’s obviously got Beast: Sheep, but I’m wondering about her second rune. She’s a daughter of Ernalda (or perhaps Esrola), so logically she would have Earth.

But the Heortoings associate sheep with clouds, rain, and Storm. Voriof has the Air rune, but might Nevala have acquired the Air rune from him (maybe as a wedding gift)? It seems a little strange that Heortlings would associate sheep with Air but their mother with Earth.

Why not Water like Heler? They take on cloud form after all. Unlikely to be Earth.

Last time I looked Umath :20-element-air: was the son of Aether :20-element-fire: and Gata :20-element-earth:, so we don’t expect always to find that divine children have their parents’ elemental runes.

Spoiler

And runes aren’t genes. And divine parentage is a slippery thing.

“Nevala” is sometimes a mongoose, but I wonder whether there is not a deliberate b–v confusion going on here:

  • Nevala ->
  • Nebala ->
  • Nebula ->
  • Cloud
