snotereceorlas Posted November 5, 2024 Posted November 5, 2024 Hello everyone! Since before lockdown our group were looking for a vtt - mostly because my most faithful member was heading off to university. I tried many vtts, i mean many (Astral table (the early favourite), Roll20, Fantasy Grounds and a lot of free vtts that gave basic but really useful options, like Owlbear rodeo) and I looked at them in depth (Foundry, Roll20, FG and a few others). I bought a unity licence for the latter when it was on sale since it had rulesets of games we wanted to look at like Rolemaster, SotDL and C&C. In the end we went for Foundry, and we have spent far too much on the content. And more: it's become an essential tool for tabletop sessions when all the information we need can be found really quickly and in full! But i was beyond delighted when our favourite game (if pushed, i would really like to put it as our preferred game from our top 3 first equal games!) came to Roll20. Problem is, after Foundry, i just can't make Roll20 work in a way that makes the vtt worth the effort. i have tried and tried and will probably try again. I immediately bought the starter set but resisted getting everything else until it proved its worth. if 6e was on FG i would buy everything because despite it's clunkiness compared with Foundry i can work with it, and it does quite a lot of things better than Foundry. I not sure if Roll20 will ever, in our opinion, be up to the task. For example we just couldn't work out how to get the maps and tokens working - this is simple in foundry, the problem is actually making sure you are using all the helpful modules that nice people have made mostly free of charge! So. We had one of best gaming sessions ever when i introduced the group to Pendragon 6e last year. Really. But unfortunately most games are online during term time. I know Dangermouse is working on getting Pendragon onto 6e but i think the project needs support directly from Chaosium. I offered my help but i've had so much work and family stuff with children and elderly relatives that i've been useless. My youngest son looked at Foundry and felt he could do a lot of the technical stuff but he is in the first year of a pretty intensive course. This is only my opinion, and i've bothered to take the time to write because i think this is important. Foundry is one of the main ones to watch. Chaosium would be best getting on board. After all, Chaosium produces some of the best games available. Andrew 1 Quote
