Nozbat Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 I was looking for what Gloranthans use for weights and measurements.. is it a cubit of cloth.. an ell of cloth.. do we use cubits? fingerbreadth? furlongs? a span? a pace? Travel is easier.. measured in days .. 3 days travel takes you to Boldhome.. Any references would be gratefully received Quote
Squaredeal Sten Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 (edited) It looks to me as if that is submerged in the game, just as we are not given much of a vocabulary of Sartarite or Brithini words. so we are not given Sartarite or Pelorian units of length or weight. Which might differ by city. No converting Sartarite paces to Pelorian leagues and Grazelander trots. All RQG units of length & distance are metric. It's for player benefit. not for verbal cosplay as though we are real Sartarites or Pelorians or Brithini, and nearly unintelligible to each other. It's not like in black powder shooting. where my 1853 Austrian Lorenz rifle reproduction by Pedersoli has the sight blade faithfully marked in Austrian "Schritt". And what are Austrian schritt? Turns out it is steps... a rabbit hole of its own. Edited December 22, 2024 by Squaredeal Sten Spelling / typing Quote

Nozbat Posted December 21, 2024 Author Posted December 21, 2024 Thanks both.. I’ll just use something like paces as a descriptive piece Quote

metcalph Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 (edited) There's also the Yellow Booklet in Troll Gods. Raibanth Rods. (Probably ~16.5 feet) Wind Force: measured in Flags Temperature: measured in I.T. Precipiation: measured in Rings. Ship speed: measured in short knots. volume of catch: measured in RSB Height of Skyfall in Skyfall Lake: 719 solar glm. The Gods Wall text (Guide to Glorantha, Glorious ReAscent) also has: A half-march. About 10 miles. A Ket. About 3 feet or a yard. Literally defined as "from nose to finger tip" Elsewhere in the Glorious ReAscent, a sun-size is a measure of astronomical difference with a literal definition as between a northern (unnamed) peak and the well of Barda. Presumably those are in Yuthuppa. From the Lunar Way p20, this is on the scale of 40 km (assuming the Red Moon is of a similar size to the Sun). Edited December 22, 2024 by metcalph 3 Quote
metcalph Posted December 22, 2024 Posted December 22, 2024 (edited) The RSB might stand for Raibanth Short Bushel (as a Bushel has been used to measure fishing catches, although it's about as exotic as a welsh hobbit). The GLM could be worked out as a unit of height of the Sky. Given that the height above Skyfall Lake is 719 then the Height at Magasta's Pool would be 1000 and the height of the Red Moon 500. A Glm would thus be 6 kilometers, suggesting that it's a league. Edited December 22, 2024 by metcalph Quote
Akhôrahil Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 (edited) Acres and Hides seem to exist in-world. And Key Miles (km). Edited December 24, 2024 by Akhôrahil Quote
