Does anyone have any thoughts on Ingolf, father of Orlaront Dragonfriend?

The only information I have been able to glean is this sentence from King of Sartar:

Orlaront Dragonman, the son of Ingolf, a man who had come out of the earth to

marry his mother for a night.

And then this:

Orlaront had spent three lifetimes being left-handed and knew

things that no one else knew.

Is that referring to Orlaront having been resurrected a few times? I think not. But then are there any others who remember past lives?

Thanks for any information.

The other information on Orlaront is in the Glorantha Sourcebook, p.46: "Orlaront Dragonfriend: This dragon magician was a key participant in the Dragonrise, but was exiled from Sartar soon after that momentous event by Prince Kallyr and joined Argrath Whitebull in Pavis. Orlaront aided Argrath in setting up the Sartar Magical Union and he is a chief advisor and boon companion to the Prince. Orlaront can speak Auld Wyrmish and is believed to have taught Argrath draconic secrets."

KoS p.200 briefly notes of Kallyr's companions: "Scout: Orlaront Dragonfriend of the Jerending". The Jerending are one of the Sambari clans centered on Caroman Village just south of the Quivin Mountains.

The only Ingolf mentioned in any text that I recall is that of Ingolf Dragonfriend who became a Dragon during the EWF period.

Given that reference is from the "in-world" King of Sartar, I would put it as a poetic reference to link Orlaront with Ingolf and the EWF (a "spiritual father" if you will).

Resurrected? Encountered EWF spirits/ghosts? Nothing readily at hand at this point to clarify further.

  • A: “‘Left-hander’ is just slang for dragonewt, isn’t it?”
  • B: “But … but that’s not possible!”
  • A shrugs.
  • B shakes her head.
  • Orlaront smiles and says nothing.

There are glorantha human who are left hander.

It is a proof or a clue (I am not sure)  that these people have some affinity with draconic business

for me the most interesting part is the three lifes time

is it just to say a long life ?

or

did he succeed to come back from death ?

or

did he visit an egg as human several times ? ( and maybe the last visit was not an end but a rebirth as something more … dragonewt ? )

In theory, after you die, your soul that remembers your life goes to whatever afterlife your cult would send you to.

That's not the case for dragons/dragonewts, who are reborn but remember their past lives.

Perhaps Orlaront is an unusual case where he first was born as a child of Ingolf in the EWF, then died. When reborn the 2nd time, he remembered his prior life. Unknown when this would be. Same thing when reborn this 3rd time. Thus he could claim to be the child of Ingolf though born each time of different mothers (and other fathers).

A rebirth of a child of Ingolf is an interesting thought, thanks!

I am still curious as to how often people do remember past lives or if it is because of the dragon(newt) connection.

Exceptionally rare, I think. A dragon(ewt) connection is one option.

If you're familiar with the Dissolution of Yelm after he was murdered, the 6 parts of his soul each went a distinct way. It may be similar normally for mortals, but happens after you've crossed the River Styx (if you consider that with the Resurrection spell, which occurs before that point, brings back a spirit that still has memory).

But perhaps there is some instance where the mind-soul and the spirit-soul (or whatever you wish to call those parts) cling together even after Judgment in Daka Fal's court. And if that occurs, then the reborn spirit-soul still has the mind-soul/memories with it. Might make for a very strange and precocious child though!
