MiG’s Alive!

I’ve put this here for reference

The Meints Index to Glorantha was called that because the Acronym of it (MiG) was something I liked. Calling it the Meints Index to Glorantha and Runequest seemed kind of blah. Of course, 20 years on, I really feel I should have called it the Meints Index to RuneQuest and Gloranthan Ephemera, which would have had the acronym of MIRAGE.... (maybe not)

Anyway, a Mig 3rd edition is something I have long pondered doing. I certainly have a lot to add from 1999-present. Over the years I've even managed to track down things I missed from the 1970s and 80s as well. It's just down to finding the time. Anyway, here's the collector's checklist from Mig2:

@Rick Meints, do you actually have copies of this - allegedly 16 issues?

The above reference was just for Issue 16. If there was RQ/Gloranthan stuff in every issue it would have been listed as 1-16, not just "16".

I do not have issues 1-16 in my collection. Sometimes I relied on someone else sending me a copy of the article, or similar. I don't exactly remember right now how I found out about issue 16 of Wyrm's Claw. I could look around the shelves.

Hope that Helps,

I've a couple of other RQ PDF products from other publishers -

owc1020 - Danger in the City of Immer

owc1022 - The Lost City of Jershon

SGRS954 - Rune Sources - The Collected Character

I suspect these products are of dubious legality as they are based on the Open Gaming Content that Mongoose released into the public domain.

Mongoose's license did not permit them to do Open Gaming Content. Once they did it in violation of their license, it's not something anyone could wave a magic wand over and make disappear, as if it had never existed.

Wait, so Mongoose wasn't allowed to release MRQ1 as OGL content?

Remember, most "game publishers" are ordinary gamer-geeks on a slightly-more-ambitious scale.

Unless someone has knowledge to the contrary, I tend to go with Heinlein's old maxim, "Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity."

In my opinion, opening up d100 gaming via the OGL was the best thing that happened to the RuneQuest family.

Overall, I agree.

It just should have been done the right way, not via the RQ title or including any Glorantha content...

They were specifically not allowed to license or sublicense anyone to make RuneQuest or Gloranthan products without prior written approval.

So where does that leave the game lines that used the OGL  create their own versions of BRP  (ie OQ, Renaissance, RD100, Mythras, etc)?

I don't know if this answers your question, but I think it is worth stating that we recently reviewed all the products using the RuneQuest trademark and contacted those companies/individuals. We provided them with options for obtaining a new license to continue using the trademark along with the option to merely remove references to it.

Rick,

I have all of the (English language) Mongoose stuff, so I can fill in a bunch of stuff for you:

8113, 8135, 8151, 8154, 8158, 8165, 8184, 8185, 8188, 8196, 8197, 8201, 8210 - Confirmed, I have all of them

8114 - Confirmed, but was a pdf only

all of your ???s are skipped numbers (or could be foreign editions, I guess)

8125, 8126, 8127, 8203 - Deus Vult material that doesn't exist for those product numbers. 8203 see 8188. 8125-8127 didn't exist until the Legend era.

There are other bits and pieces. Unnumbered items, items produced by other companies for MRQ/MRQII, etc. If you ever get serious about a MiG update, let me know.

Now, I am not a fan of Mongoose nor an apologist for them.

But I can see that might have been an innocent (albeit daft) mistake. Their model did (maybe still does) rely on churning out a huge number of books each month, often without proper proofreading. In that high turnover environment, it might be possible to be working on the default setting for their other work and just not realising or checking that this one property is licensed on different lines.

If you are working on a licensed setting -- as opposed to one bought outright, or developed in-house -- then you MUST abide by the terms of the license.  You can say it " might have been an innocent (albeit daft) mistake" and I can agree with that phrasing; I don't find it incompatible with my own "it was 'mere' stupidity, it was a pretty intense level of stupid."

I just see yours as a somewhat-more-polite version of mine.    ;)

All,

The Mongoose license was terminated by Issaries Inc. The license terms were clear. I don't see much point in trying to speculate on why they did or didn't do things.

I'd much rather spend that time on finding things to add to the MiG new edition.
Moving swiftly on to that, if you are interested in helping me, here are a few things to note about suggesting things to add:

  • While I am happy to list foreign language products on a bullet list or checklist, I can't read and evaluate them, so I tend to not include them beyond that.
  • I prioritize printed things over web-only or PDF-only things. I only have so much time. I mean no disrespect, and make no judgements.
  • I'm not into listing knick-knacks, t-shirts, mugs, or other similar things. I tend to refer to these as "spirit items".
  • I'm not really into including unique items that were not made for general sale or distribution.
  • If you have a copy of MiG1 or MiG2 you pretty much know how I intend to approach the next edition.
