Ogre Island

Why is it that no one ever "likes" new topics the generate lots of input/discussion/arguments/fresh ideas etc.

Thanks for this Mr. Dragonsnail as I often wondered about expanding Ogre Island and had no idea there was a good bit more of a detailed outline regarding the island's history and occupants.

Pavis gateway to Adventure

I never looked at these, great info. now all we need is a detailed map of the subterranean oger temple built around the Eye of Wakboth. As a start, the old Indian Jones movie Temple of Doom is a perfect fit. If the Thanatri were not based on Kali-worshipping Thuggees please give another example? Oger Thanatari sound like fun don't they!? And well, if the "Eye" happens to have parts of the skull forming its temple precincts underground all the better?

image.png.3f2bb29bc004d842dee126d2fd76ff19.png image.jpeg.2f8955b244438ace225cb4a0c7e077e5.jpeg

There are lots of detail in the old RQA 03 "The Block" that would help outline a scenario in or through the Skull of Wakboth and his eye... anyone have a rendering of walkboti from RQA3? Are they like dwarvish nimerlings but chaotic?

The temple lower levels assuredly connect to, or were connected to the Krarsht Complex below the Devil's Playground and other areas like the Puzzle Canal though likely collapsed over time. Possibly the tunnels were opened again during the Lunar occupancy, maybe several of the Lunar officials are actually Ogres and even officiate at the ceremonies? "Gim Gim the cannibal" and does he happen to wear a bison skull or something like it as a hat when officiating?

Actually, I recall seeing a portion of a map to Robcradle in the RQII Big Rubble Supplement, and it seemed to be something more akin to a citadel than a city.

Does anyone know of this map? The Big Rubble map clip above, one shows a dark area that appears to be the Great Basher, red arrow? I wonder if this "metal" could be minded somehow or if it was just hard rock that had form/set cast on it at a large intensity making it sharp/pointed?

I am thinking the Temple of Doom in the movie was supposed to be beneath the town in the clip below. A similar plan, now in ruins would have sprawled across the west end of Ogre Island possibly? Another dark area on the 2nd clip above shows what may have been a town or citadel at the upper north side of the Island...

Last clip of Ogre Island (Auld Pavis) tunnel section from River of Cradles, Grotto of Pocharngo.

A scrap yard image of old CV6 below, could have been how they deconstructed the cradles. But am thinking they were mostly stone as in another source they were cut out of rock in one piece by the Gold Wheel Dancers and dwarves? IIRC it's called Boathouse Ruins where they were built...

An old Jrusteli city on Ogre Island would have been designed following the "Jrusteli pattern" as described in the Runequest Book 2: The World of Glorantha. p27 with central market and straight main streets. This city would have been modified to permit the extraction of cradles and the disbursement of the cradle and its contents in the central market? I think of it as a scrapping yard for naval vessels somehow, 2nd clip above?

I feel a bit uneasy asking this but did they eat the giant babies? If they were ogres they would have no? Also would any of the "iron wood" taken from the cradles still be in use in the Rubble and or have been taken to New Pavis from the Rubble?

There are loads of reasons for tunnels under Robcradle.

100% agree especially with the Eye of Wakboth discussed above... form/set light for everlasting light spells or torches? Yes RQ3... maybe the tunnels should be rough hewn openings... for anything newer but the old tunnels may have been made through God Learner sorcery?

Easy solution to underground food sources: Chaos Garden, 2nd Age chaotic vegetation via Thanatari darklight enchantments, see Shadows on the Borderlands p.40-41.

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon late and to add all the clips but I need visual examples to help my "imagination" this is great stuff and thank you Dragonsnail for posting!

I should add this by Mr. Richards, wonder if the "deep below" is connected to or is the Eye but it looks like a plant on as island, could be a chaos garden!?

This is a nice illustration, ngl, and it is more than mildly problematic that Robcradle was positioned over a source of immense Chaotic power linked to Wakboth directly.  I mean, Ogre Island is literally in the middle of the Rubble.  What were they thinking?  Chaos = Power is what they were thinking, I suspect.

Just the standard consequence of geomancy for power lines? Nobody forced the Lunars to locate their new Temple of the Reaching Moon where a dragon slept.

Back in 2008, for my still-running RQ3 campaign, I wrote an epic climactic mega-scenario (PCs were very powerful runelord types) about Pavis's reckoning with Ogre Island. It's way over the top and makes me chuckle now. But there might be fun kernels of ideas here for anyone. I used ideas from the Cacodemon Shrine

Spoiler

on Griffin Island/Mountain

as a starter.

Spoiler: GM Plot Summary:

Spoiler

The time has come for Pavis to be rid of the ogres on Ogre Island. They hide a terrible secret as the ogres in a sense are
Pavic! The party is sent to spearhead the merciless slaughter. They enter a twisted old God Learner cradle-analysis
complex and fight their way down through defensive sorceries and chaos monstrosities to the ogres’ deep caverns.
There chaos beings farm obscene “herm trees” supporting a small village of ogres, including some of Pavic descent. The
grim massacre escalates as a Cacodemon shrine is found, where the ogres are attempting to call Cacodemon to Pavis in
a great conspiracy with Than Ulbar to bring back the mad god Ragnaglar! The party must slay the last ogres to stop the
ritual. They then enter a magical giant’s mirror to embark on a wild heroquest on the Plateau of Statues, using giants’
bodies as vehicles. First they must free a knot of Genert’s hair from chaos’s grasp, and then they must destroy the Horn
of Ragnaglar before it is united with other pieces. If successful, they return to Pavis in time to reclaim their own bodies
and see Genert’s rebirth. Simply epic.

Steal freely from the pdf linked; I'll never get around to actually publishing this. Some of it might only make sense to me. But it's 21 pages of stuff.

I'll check it out later today. Thank you so much for sharing!

Sometimes old scribbles make the best "run with it scenarios" add several bowls of chips and a few drinks... We had weeks of fun from raids into a dwarf labyrinth that had been taken over by trolls, maped on graph paper made out as we went back in the 80's, similar to the Haunted Ruins.

I assume everyone will benefit from the posts herein in generating something "over the top for Ogre Island". A truly fearsome place, Deep Below.

Add the notes from the RQA The Block of the Devil's Bones and the references here plus the River of Cradles and you have something really epic. Oh, forgot to add the Chaos Garden, mentioned above somewhere, lots of good cave exploration in that scenario as well.

Maybe the Staff of Pavis (not sure what it called) from The Shadows of Pavis book is needed to explore and vanquish the denizens of "Deep Below". That of course would be the title of any scenario to the Eye.

As a stretch maybe Mr. Scott's Dwarf Knoll ideas could be used? Who knows maybe the tear in the cosmic membrane is caused by the Eye and the dwarves are trying to repair it? Dwarf Mass Transit fits into the Pavis tunnels as well... PTA the Pavis Transit Authority.

The Ogres, other chaos must have numerous entrances to the Eye?  image.png.5d8defe5ce009a1fb2c249bb285cf1bc.png

In my opinion, Robcradle was build on this island because it was a practical location to catch the giant's cradle. It is possible that the Jrustreli never knew about the presence of the eye deep below their installations.

From the little that has been published about the Jrusteli, I would doubt that they didn't know and were looking for ways to use its power. Giant Cradles and a huge source of power. What's not to like? Maybe some coffee too?

Do you really think that the Godlearners were that naive?  I don't.

Would he have brought in Chaotics in a place teeming with Storm Bull cultists?

Well isn't that interesting.  Did you forget that Pavis and Stormbull are hostile to each other?  I can't see there being many Stormbulls in Old Pavis back in the day... Until the walls came down.  Isn't that convenient for all the chaos cultists?😉

I'm pretty sure I have found the Eye of Wakboth underneath the floorboards of my new house.. it had mutated the woodworm into sociopathic gun-totting racing car drivers who smoked woodbine cigarettes and were so out of control that when they went out, they didn't even tell their mummies what time they would be home at..

At least thats my analysis and conclusion of what I found under the floorboards and I did leave out the mummified mouse in the interests of propriety

(Other interpretations are equally as valid, mine is quite often the product of a scheming GM)

Or maybe the cruelty of slaying giant babies to loot the toys they carry is what nourished and fed the Eye for years…

Baby seals, whale blubber, the thought is really gruesome. Just had a horrific thought, dragging a still crying giant baby up a ramp covered with blood.

Substitute a baby for the whales in the clips below? The idea is really gut wrenching. Is so for me even with it being whales...

Switching topics, if something like that were going on the tunnels, air shafts, stairs, etc. would have been in place to get sustenance down to the eye. The Temple of Doom pit and scrifical rack comes to mind again.

Who knows possibly the "eye" was raised mechanically as a sort of defense or even a long ranged attack chaos beam weapon for Pavis but only hovered there on a very short basis, suspended above a tower... and then lowered again to protect others from being utterly tainted by chaos. Wonder where we have seen that before?

Anyone know what the Eye of Wakboth's powers might be?

Pavis had a good number of ariel defence (maybe offensive) towers. Would have posted the ship illustration with the beam weapon mirror thingys but could find it easily...

Cheers.
