Does meteoric iron still exist in Glorantha?

Recommended Posts

I remember there being some random encounter in the Griffin Island set where meteoroids fall from the sky and you can find various metals, iron included. Does meteoric iron still exist in Glorantha?

In Griffin Mountain and Griffin island this was random encounter [31] A VISION IN THE SKY:

As the adventurers travel, one of them begins to notice a giant image forming in the air, several kilometers ahead of them.

As the image grows clearer, it is obviously several kilometers tall. It begins to move and is revealed as a struggle between a hero and a vile, disgusting, snake-like creature that virtually oozes venom from every pore. The battle seems to last only a few moments as the hero slays the creature. Suddenly, there is a sound as if the sky rips in half. A painfully brilliant light flashes, blinding all who have been watching the struggle. The blindness lasts for 5 minutes. Those who still see will witness fire streaking down from the sky to strike the ground.

-----------------------------

While that impact has a crater, the "object" that falls is not a meteorite or similar from space.

Hah, thanks, it's been a while since I last played that. :)

To make things potentially more fun, please don't interpret that one random encounter as a statement that meteorites don't happen in Glorantha.

They may or may not, based on whatever you think is more fun.

Meteors: Usually bits of the Firmament that fall down due to temporary God Time-Mundane World intersections, due to the sheer reverberating power of that conflict. Occasionally these bits also contain the bones of dead gods, or bits of their armor or weapons. The Mostali are hard work at sealing these mythospatial anomalies up.

Sometimes meteors may also come from deliberate openings in the Firmament, where the Celestial gods deliver judgment and doom, usually invoked by powerful rituals such as the Treeburn or Skyburn.

And sometimes, just sometimes, something else might come through. Something that really not ought to be in the World...

(Just some loose ideas.)

In a word yes, though it's very rare --- meteoric silver, bronze, and gold are, I would personally conjecture, perhaps less uncommon. There should be the occasional quicksilver meteorites too, but they'd be extremely hard to gather swiftly enough before flowing away and being gone.

Usually IMO, they would be fragments of the Broken World from the destructions of the Gods War and Lesser Darkness.

And then there's an extremely small number of Truestone meteorites still falling from the destruction and cosmic explosion of the Spike.

Sometimes parts of the World Machine break, and if gears clash in the Sky Dome, pieces may fall off: these may consist of pieces of Sky Metal, or if parts of repairs, death metal may have been used instead. There are rumors, never commented upon by dwarves, that the Juggernaut is actually an entire gear wheel that rolled off the Sky and has continued to roll for all Time.

Jajagappa is the god of Lost Rocks, a astronomical feature.

Umath crashed in the North.

The Darkness may well be the result of a meteoric impact.

Ghelotralas came to ground in the west, with significant effect, and the recognition of Lodril as heat within the earth.

Mernita is lost in the fall of a 'moon'.

One of Argrath's later battles involves a 'rogue planet'.

IMHO there's every indication that Glorantha is under massive bombardment from time to time.

It's also worth noting that the study of meteors is part of the Celestial Lore skill in RuneQuest Glorantha.

While meteors do not require the existence of meteorites, it doesn't seem a big leap.

Chalkline posted a random encounter over on rpgnet once where the 'meteorite' was an iron helmet. Presumably a hero's or a god's.

Is it possible that any of the Star Captains that descended to the surface had iron tools?

More likely enchanted tin as that is the star element. However, if they had some encounter with the dwarves, and the dwarves sent them on to fix a piece of the World Machine, they might have (reluctantly) gifted them with some enchanted iron.

But sometimes, the Mostali may find the repair of the Machine may require different metals in different places.  Most times an "adventurer" want iron, the Mostali are reluctant... But in getting a piece of Iron up to the Sky, if it's needed there, they might find a Sky Captain to be the perfect tool for the job.

Mostly, of course, it's the Mostali who are perfect tools.
