I copied and pasted the individual images from the NPC PDF into GIMP.  I then added the alpha channel for transparency to the background.

I did have to fill in a few small portions of the bluish outer frame so that the tranparency would not overlap some of the lighter portions of the NPC.

Saved them as a PNG at their native 200dpi resolution.

    I hope that helps.

Oh yeah you were manually slicing them. My point was that they exist in the pdf of the actual book with the alpha channel background just as a lower resolution, clearly the assets exist and the NPC PDF should be updated to make that available at decent quality.

Kyle, is this what you are looking for?

    Gisele Helcimer.png

    Mordecai Hammer OLeary.png

    Walter Gilman.png

Yes exactly, those have the background as appropriately transparent while the images in the NPC PDF are a solid background. Where did you get them?

  3. The NPC Portraits PDF has solid white backgrounds for each of the NPC portraits in the Arkham book, these same assets exist with the alpha layer transparent background in the actual book pdf but are significantly lower resolution.

This is very frustrating for importing them into a VTT, something I expect is a primary use of the separate portraits pdf. Is this a mistake? Could the higher resolution assets with alpha transparency be made available?

Please note that a higher resolution PDF has been added to the download files for Regency Cthulhu.

Thanks Mike, still seeing some very ugly scaling artifacts particularly on the silhouettes on pg 25, pg 9.  The map before the introduction is very blurry. Handouts are borderline unreadable. All dramatically worse than the print version.

    This is "CHA23179_-_Regency_Cthulhu-v2.pdf (46.44 MB)"

There seems to be some problem with some fonts in the main book. Apart from the above mentioned character sheet problem, there are others:

    • page 26: A brief introduction to the regency era is also blurry and bad looking. However, the same page taken from the handouts PDF looks good. This pixely-blurry thing is only in the main book only.
    • page 87: Handout: Long 2, main book version looks pixely-blurry, handout version is crisp and ok

I did not check every single handout yet, but seems to apply to all of them. The main text in the book is crisp and high quality, but all the extras seem low quality.

Tested/viewed using an iPad and also using Adobe Reader on Windows, same result.

Could you please fix so that the rulebook has also good quality fonts for every page?

This, throughout the PDF jpeg compression ratios appear to me significantly higher than other chaosium books. There are clear artifacts on basically every image, even in the elements of the layout design. Every image looks blurry and over compressed.

For example on page 9 even a simple fector image has a sheen of artifacts on it. It looks terrible on a 12.9" iPad Pro in Goodreader. I know it's a struggle to balance a PDF that doesn't bog down low-end devices, but this is a bit absurd and looks much worse than every other Chaosium PDF I have, to the point of being distracting.
