You're probably right about them not knowing about the RPG, though Chronicle of the Black Sword by Hawkwind was released in 1985.

I think SB has a special place in my heart because it provided something that other games did not at the time.  At the time I was fed up of the D&D system and its endless expansion of mechanics.  SB did away with all that and had something viceral - where a beggar could survive and the Melnibonean Sorcerer Noble-Warrior got chomped.   

It was the "Punk Rock" of FRP
