oh and with regards to the move and/or attack, again its down to what the investigator is doing. You can close in on someone and attack them in melee, step behind cover, lean round and fire off a shot or two, dive behind cover (and doing a full dodge which means anyone firing at them has a penalty die pg 113), any number of things.

CoC is far more abstract than other systems like Alien which has fast and slow action or D&D which has bonus actions. Ask your players what they're doing, work out if it is possible without it being totally stupid, then tell them what they need to roll or the outcome of their action.

That's not going to work for me. We're going to be using this on Roll20, and the vagueness of those rules are not going to mesh with a map. Given the lethal nature of combat, Players are going to want to do more than take cover and shoot it out; they're going to want to maneuver.

But it should be pretty easy to house-rule it.

Thanks for the input and the link; now I know I didn't read the rules incorrectly.

  2. Really impressed with the 7th Ed system so far, but one thing isn't clear to me: movement within combat.

As I'm reading the rules, you can move (usually around 25' based on age & Size), and also make an attack (multiple attacks, if using a suitable firearm and taking the appropriate penalties. Or instead of an attack, take a non-attack action.

    Is this correct?

If you forgo an attack, can you move more?

RuneQuest, CoC's parent system had rules for improving attributes. Since the games are vary similar the rules would port over fairly easily.Basically attributes could be trained up similar to how skills could be trained up (which in RQ they can). The exact rules varied depending on which edition of RQ you used, but roughly it would cost 2-3 times as much as skill improvement. There tended to be limits based upon your original attributes and/or species maximums, and in RQ3 by how much the trainer knew (that is if he knew how to train STR up 3 points, then that is as far as you could be trained by that teacher). Also in RQ3, a character could "practice" to improve attributes (and skills) without a teacher. This had a similar end effect, but was less likely to succeed.

I could dig up the actual rules from RQ2 or RQ3 if you are interested.

I would like to see them, if it is not too much trouble.

  4. I'm looking at a long-term CoC campaign, and I was thinking that a more developed PC growth option would be a good thing. The rules cover skills, but what about improving attributes?

I had some vague idea of awarding points for Role-play, ideas, etc, and having X number of these 'reward points' translate into a 1 point increase to an attribute (not Size, Luck, or Magic).

The Mythos rating is used when completing a full study of a Tome.

When a full study is completed, if the investigator's Cthulhu Mythos rating is lower than the tome's Mythos rating, they gain the full CMF number as Cthulhu Mythos points.

If the investigator's Cthulh Mythos rating is equal to or higher than the tome's Mythos rating, then they only gain the lower CMI number.

    See Keeper Rulebook p.174

    In addition:

The Mythos rating is the figure rolled against when using the tome as reference material.

This can only happen once a full study has been completed however.

The Investigator first spends 1D4 hours searching the tome, before rolling a D100 against the tome's Mythos rating to see if they were successfull.

    See Keeper Rulebook p.175

    Hope that helps!

    It does, Thanks!

I'm looking for decent VTT maps and tokens to use in a multitude of BRP games (RQG, Roman Empire BRP, Cthulhu Invictus, Bronze Age BRP). Does anybody have any favourite sources or leads for me? While free stuff is fine, I'm also willing to pay.

Pinterest (free account) is loaded with free maps create by people who just like making maps. I've been using VTTs for year, most recently Roll20. They have plenty of tokens, except for top-down. I stop by and grab a map or two every single day.

Deviant Art (not what it sounds like) has plenty of maps.

Oones Maps are on Drive-thru are superb, and inexpensive.  https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/61/0one-Games

  7. Dark Tower, Judges Guild 1978. Unpolished, as most JG products, but I've had wonderful times with it.

Carved in Stone, a Columbia Games scenario for Harn, but it would work in any low fantasy setting. Normally CG is not the best for adventures, but this one is excellent.

And the old AD&D G-series, Against the Giants.

The current edition of BRP is what's called the BYB... the Big Yellow Book... published 2010. Odds are, your pdf is the latest one.

Aces High used to have a purchase link at Chaosium. I tried looking for it, but no luck. Don't know why.

There isn't a generic bestiary, but the RuneQuest in Glorantha Bestiary would serve you well.

Well, my copy of the 4th Edition (copyright 2008) has the same cover as the Copyright 2022 version (yellow cover with Da Vinci-style sketch), and the art inside lines up.

    I hope they're the same.

  9. Long time gamer (started 1979) just turned on to BRP. Have recently switched from F2F to Roll20 (and love it), and the search for a good system supported by Roll20 led me to BRP (literally three days ago).

I have three questions that a forum search couldn't solve:

    1) I just bought the core rules on Drive-thru. Later, shuffling through my poorly-organized pdf collection, I discovered I had the Core Rules 4th edition. Is there any difference? The reason I ask, is that 4th edition pdf can be high-lighted and noted on my Ipad, whereas the one I just bought can't.

    2) Where can I buy a copy of Aces High?

    3) Is there a monster compendium, or should I just refer to the various setting books.

    Thanks.
