  1. This convention is focused on Fairytales, folklore and fantasy. Here is the

    website:

Faerie Escape Atlanta | Faerie Escape Atlanta

The website has been updated with an events schedule. The con is June

15-17(Fri-Sun). The event on Friday evening is free and open to the public; no

entry fee and no convention badge required.

I'll be in charge of gaming for the con. I'll bring a bunch of board games and

card games. You are welcome to bring your own games. I'll also run a tabletop

RPG on Sunday from 11am to 3pm. I'll use a system called Fudge and it will be a

    fairytale-based scenario. I'll provide dice.

The Marketplace(i.e. dealer's room) and the gaming room are open to the public

for the entire convention. You do not need to purchase a convention badge to

enter either one of them. Of course, you will need a badge to enter any of the

    other rooms.

Even if you just want to do some shopping or play games it will be a chance to

see some great faerie costumes in the hallways.

    Ted

  2. I have the Big Gold Book and Coc 6th edition. I have only a little bit of experience with Chaosium's systems(but lots of experience with other systems).

There are no stats or guidelines for creating Mighty Children in CEoTC. How would you do it? What are their abilities?

  3. Well, well. While looking for "Critical Hit Tables" on the Internet, I found this URL:

    http://www.espministries.com/Topic-Dungeons.html

Somebody who is talking about D&D and how evil RPGs are. I know this is waaaaaay Off-Topic, but I thought it might be worth a look.

While I do not want to place my religious believes on the plate here, I still find the topic interesting.

The guy is talking about how players over-identificate with their characters. Well, HE is not saying that, but quoting it.

    What he says is:

<<After extensive research, the Christian Life Ministries concludes: "DUNGEONS & DRAGONS™ instead of a game is a teaching on demonology, witchcraft, voodoo, murder, rape, blasphemy, suicide, assassination, insanity, sex perversion, homosexuality, prostitution, Satan worship, gambling, Jungian psychology, barbarism, cannibalism, sadism, desecration, demon summoning. Necromantics, divination and many more teachings, brought to you in living color direct from the pit of hell!!!">>

Wow, never thought about that. In fact, it does not even bother me. Neither side, the "dark" nor the "light" one. To my THIS is over-reaction.

    >>". . . after years of study of the history of occultism, after having researched a book on the subject, and after having consulted with scholars in the field of historical research, I can say with confidence: these games are the most effective, most magnificently packaged, most profitably marketed, most thoroughly researched introduction to the occult in man's recorded history."<<

So, it means that every author writing an RPG book or fantasy novels is an occult member trying to spread the occult word? This brings light into many Call of Cthulhu RPG books now ... I think I now fully understand the Other Gods, Nyarlathotep, Azatoth and ... oooooh (critical failure of my sanity check)

He is right, though, these RPG books are well researched, well worded, effective and the best books covering the topic in known history.

Do they bring me to the edge of madness? Is their way leading away from God? I do not think so.

But the books do get me THINKING! And questioning given facts that others take for granted ...

    >>John Torell, with Christian Life Ministries in California, received a phone call from a medical doctor in Seattle, Washington. The doctor is treating a policeman for severe depression caused by the suicide of his sixteen-year-oId son. The son, who had been heavily involved in D&D™ for two years, shot himself with his father's service revolver.<<

And D&D is involved in the death because ...?

    >>Some have argued that D&D™ is a healthy release of suppressed hostilities. But seeing the power that can be seized in games, psychiatrist Laurence Johnson cautions, "If I had a child who tended toward schizophrenia, I'd never let him near D&D™. There's a danger that it would reinforce feelings of grandiosity, of omnipotence. Reality and fantasy are hard enough for schizophrenics to differentiate."<<

Jep, that is right. And you do not want to watch TV if you suffer from epileptic seizures. It is a fact that people with certain illnesses have to be careful what they do.

    >>"[...] Nearly everybody would rather play evil characters because they are much more powerful."<

That is not true and lacks facts. It purely depends on the rule system.

    >>Does it {D&D} increase or decrease a player’s faith in God and His Word?<<

Does it have to? Does a book have to do that? A movie? A radio station?

    >>Make sure that your children are not involved with or participating in D&D™.

Distribute this information to young people, youth ministers, teachers, etc.

Contact me for more information, especially if your child or children are involved.<<

Wow, he reminds me on the discussion if Heavy Metal music is evil and satanic. Some people just do not get it. On the other hand, I do not get his so strong believes in god. Looks like he is on a mission and made some long shots here.

I only do hope parents will do a better research on the topic than he did and they come to a conclusion that is best for their child.

Okay, this is a long thread and I did not read it through. Hoprfully, I am not repeating what someone else might have brought up.

This thread is a good opportunity to inform you about the Committee for the Advancement of Role-Playing Games. This is a private, non-profit group that started out as an effort to counteract the negative claims made about RPGs back in the 1980's. There have not been many such claims in recent years so most of our activity has gone to a more academic research about RPGs as a hobby and cultural phenomenon.

Anytime you hear of such negative claims please contact the Chair or one of the Regional Directors and let them know about it. There are a lot of forums and we can't monitor all of them so direct contact would be appreciated. You can find out the contact info here:

    www.car-pga.org

I should also point out that CAR-PGa has a googlegroup and we also publish a newsletter( which can be had in paper or electronic form).

  4. I'm planning on running the abovementioned game and I've borrowed CoC 6th Ed from a friend just to get critter stats and some spells.

I realize that the Knowledge(Blasphemous Lore) skill from BGB is meant to be a generic Mythos Lore skill.

Does it make any sense to have both that skill and Knowledge(occult) in the aformentioned game? If not, why not? If yes, then what is (or should be) the difference between the two?

  5. Well, I ran all the micro-adventures except for Bank Heist and Footsteps in the Dark. The players seemed to enjoy them well enough. And, it's always good when you can give two hawt girls their first experience with tabletop RPGs. Really, I think that inducting hawt girls into the hobby should be much higher on everyone's list of priorities.

  6. So, I plan to run these little buggers at Sci Fi Summer Con in about a week; got some questions.

    Lost Temple of Garthoon

    by Troy Wilhelmson

Why does Jonan the elf have both biped and quadriped movement ratings?

    Escape From Earthport

    by Sarah Newton

I get the joke about "Cola Station" since the station is a hollow cylinder but what's the joke behind "planers" and the "Custodian" ?

    Dwelling of the Ancients

    by Nick Middleton

What is the structure supposed to have been before the big disaster? Is the side view supposed to be showing me the three stairways that are also shown in map #1?

  7. Well, I could not get that group together. The personal schedules could not be rectified(dang-blasted work getting in the way of gaming).

So, I plan to run it at Sci Fi Summer Con in June. It will be my first time GMing any kind of Chaosium RPG. I also plan to run all those mini-scenarios from the free BRP quick-start thing that is on the Chaosium website.

If any of you live in the Atlanta area come to the con and play in my Zombie King game.

  8. Next question:

I already looked in the skill section and the armor section. Maybe I overlooked it but is there anything in the "Vitruvian Man" book that tells me if armor penulties will reduce a skill below the base skill? Which page?

  9. Wow! An answer from one of the writers. That's cool.

Hopefully, you will continue to read this thread. What was the thinking behind the "personality" part of chargen? And how, in your mind, does it mesh with the variable game levels? What was the intention there?

  10. Hi,

I think there was a thread recently about “option 6” or something like that which addressed the impact of the including the extra 260 “personality” points. I am inclined not to use them myself – but if I did, I would use them to replace the INTx10 free points. (This would be for normal power-level fast and furious games like a zombie apocalypse or the like.)

This link should go to the thread: http://basicroleplaying.com/forum/basic-roleplaying/1077-utilisation-step-six-step-6-your-games.html

For the record, I run “Normal” games.

    Hope this helps,

    Rich

Umm...wait...INT x 10 free points? What's that? Did I overlook some major part of character generation?

I know about the "personality" skill points. I know about the skill points to be spent on profession skills based on normal, heroic, epic and superhuman games. I don't remember seeing anything about INT x 10.

  11. The book addresses the idea of campaign power level. It has a sliding scale: normal, heroic, epic and superhuman. You get a greater number of skill points, the higher you go. Okay, no problem. Understood.

There is also a "personality" section of character creation that seems to indicate it should be used for...well...heroic characters. How are these two elements of the rules supposed to mesh? If I try to do a normal level game but let them take the "personality" option, is it still really a normal level game? Your thoughts on this?

Leaving aside the "personality" section, do you differentiate the campaign levels in some way other than just more skill points? Are there optional rules you would use? Homebrew rules?

  12. So a vampiric undead guy who creates zombies by touch instead of vampires by bite?

Have you made what the character was in life up yet?

I would say do that first then increase STR and CON by 1.5 or x2 and then add the abilities you described. Bring him to life through description after that.

You stated a one shot adventure, how tough are the players going to be?

The players are not particularly tough. The characters, on the other hand, should be up to the task.

I pre-generated all the characters. I designed them based on a heroic level game. In addition, I gave them each a "personality" background boost.

  13. Yeah, I don't mind if the regular zombies are "slow, stupid, and easily avoided" but they won't be flesh seeking zombies. They will be more like D&D zombies; magical automatons created by magicians as menial servants and mindless soldiers. They can obey simple orders. It will be the Zombie King that will be the improved version. He will have the same INT and POW as he had in life.

The ZK has gradually aquired an army of zombie minions. Since he senses whatever his minions sense, he has an excellent intelligence gathering mechanism. After one group of his zombies has encountered the PCs, he can adjust his tactics to account for PC weaknesses. And, he can use a lone zombie as a scout to get immediate real time intelligence. Of course, he will equip his troops with whatever armor and weapons he can get.

As for the mummy suggestions, I will read that part when I get a chance.

  14. A few months ago I bought BRP. I've played Chaosium's games a little bit but never run one of them. I'm going to run a one-shot adventure in a few weeks; it will be a fantasy game. I'll use the Kingdoms of Kalamar game setting.

So, I came up with a new type of critter as the main bad guy for the adventure: The Zombie King. The idea is that when a necromancer creates a zombie there is a slight chance there will be a mishap. The original spirit returns and inhabits the body. It is free-willed; not under the necromancer's control. If it touches a zombie it permanantly takes control. On the night of the full moon it can create a zombie of it's own from a handy corpse. It can sense anything any of its zombies can sense.

Since I'm a newbie to BRP, what can you suggest about statting out this dude? Any ideas?

  15. Time for my next question. Take a look at the "Use of spells by non-magicians" subsection of the Magic section. The third sentence has confused me. I thought spells were bought like the other skills. If the character has INT of 12, he can know only 3 levels altogether? What does that mean?

  16. It certainly is germane and I'm not laughing. I think I raised this very point a number of months ago - but it was said (by Mr Durrall himself, perhaps?) that the text is in error.

However, I prefer that "armour values for both shield and armour are subtracted" mechanism from good old RQ, and dislike the 'opposed roll' style of the new Attack/Defence Matrix (which is related, of course - and that you were asking about in another thread).

So I still use the traditional 'Independent Rolls' mechanic - and I'll bet I'm not the only one round here who does.

    Who is Mr. Durall?

    The text is in error?

Is that just someone's opinion of bad game design on the part of Chaosium?

Or, is it meant that Chaosium really did not mean to put that rule in the book?

  17. First of all, I am more or less a newbie with BRP. So, hopefully I won't come across as too laughable in my inquiery. I'm still trying to learn BRP RAW. Since this thread is about shields, maybe you guys can help me.

Take a look at the "armor" section that begins on P. 202. Look at the 5th paragraph in that section. It begins with "In settings where shields" and the last sentence seems to be of particular importance. I think I get the meaning of the paragraph but I'm not certain. What is it? Is it germaine to MacTele's original question of this thread concerning utility of shield parry vs. weapon parry?

  18. I will pose some rule questions and you folks can help me learn BRP a little bit better.

Let us suppose that Joe the Warrior( no relation to Joe the Plumber) has a shield and a shortsword. Bob the Bandit has a knife in his left hand and a light club in his right. Joe makes an attack and gets a Success. Bob dodges and gets a Fumble. Looking at A/D Matrix, Bob has to roll on Fumble table. There is a Parry Fumble table but none for Dodge.

Should Bob just roll on Parry Fumble?

Assuming the answer is yes, let's say he rolls 88. That means Joe's attack is considered Special rather than the original regular Success. Yes or No?

If yes, then Joe has Special and Bob has Fumble. That part of A/D Matrix says defender rolls on Fumble table. Bob has to roll on Fumble table AGAIN? Is that right?
