The tone of the sub Roman Arthur just doesn't fit with Pendragon. The 5th-6th  century  Arthur is a word in collapse, with Arthur desperately trying to hold back the incoming tide of Saxons. The rules are written with the 15th century  idealised version of chivalry in mind, not the grim dark last stand of the Britons. The historic Arthur, if there is one, should be a setting for BRP rather than trying to get Pendragon to fit.

I  could not agree more. Pendragon is the epitome of the classic view of Arthur and his knight set in a world of chivalry and romance, magic and fantasy. I don't think I would want to use it either as a historical version

Yes. I think there was a long-ish thread on Robin Hood variant in the old Nocturnal Forums. If you go to the archive page Scott linked a while back (see below), I think it might be in the Houserules... Anyway, poke around and you will find it.

Cheers I will take a look

I was lucky enough to visit it in early 90s. It was a big difference when I went back in late 2000s. Not that it was allowed to go to the stones even in 90s, but the tourist path was even further aback than it was. But hey-ho. It is still iconic, and it will make the missus happy, so... :)

Me too I think it was in the 60s when I first visited the monument, It was just in an open field back then and you could just walk in amongst the stones I don't think you even had to pay an entry free. Still it remains an amazing site. But a commercial one now a days

  4. Yes I agree for Pendragon the Medieval Arthur is a must, I don't think I will bother using Pendragon for any of the historical themes. And as you rightly say just a touch of magic. It has to be High Medieval and Knights of the Round Table. The Historical stuff I think I will leave for my wargaming interests

  5. A quick question

I don't want to go too far off topic, But has anyone else considered using the Pendragon System for that other iconic folklore hero Robin Hood? Along with Arthurian I have also done some work on the RH legends and the thought crossed my mind that players could be outlaws for whatever reason and running from the law to hide up in the Green wood and organizing raids and robbery to survive maybe even coming into contact with Characters from the stories such as Robin etc.

Its something I might try later  once Ive done more Arthurian games

  6. Hi All

As a amateur historian and a gamer i find often the paths will cross. This is the case with the Arthurian legend. I enjoy fantasy RPGs and Historical wargames. And I enjoy researching the period to. As with everything Arthurian nothing is ever clear cut, and the Jury is still out as if there was ever a real Arthur. As the Early Dark Ages is primarily my favourite period I found I end up with 3 Arthur's. The first is very historically based and doesn't really have an Arthur or any of the Knights, Round Table, Merlin etc and focuses on the Saxons, Angles and Jutes that raided Britain in the early 5th-6th century as well as Picts, Welsh and Irish. A good example would be GMTs Games Pendragon

The 2nd is also set in the 5th-6th Century's but it has Arthur and his knights along with Merlin and others. Fighting the Saxons lead by the likes of Hengist and Horsa. It also has Picts and Irish raiders and the traitor Vortigern.

Finally the 3rd is Pendragon all history is thrown out of the window, its got Knights in Shining armour, Merlin the Wizard, Mordred and everything else Medieval 14th Century will allow and includes Faerie lore as well.

I find with these 3 levels of play and style I cover all I want from the Stories of Arthur.

For Fiction I read T.H.Whites "Once and Future King" and Bernard Cornwalls "Winter King Trilogy" Plus historical stuff to.

Is there anyone else who likes to look into the other aspects of Arthurian lore Historical or otherwise ??      .

  7. Hi Jeff

i must say Umbum is new to me. But after reading your post I took s look online and see they do an interesting range. I saw a very nice castle I might invest in.

I am a figure collector and I guess that stems from my early days as a gamer in DnD etc. I’m not sure this forum is the right place to discuss this topic so I would be interested in others opinions on if Miniatures can play a roll or if anyone else finds the subject interesting

  8. Greetings and well met.

Just wondering how many of you use Miniatures in your games. I gather its really a storytelling game, but I've been gaming since the 70s and beyond (Yes I'm Old) and miniatures play a big part in my games if only for visual representation. I was lucky enough to find almost the complete range of Thunderbolt Mountain Arthurian miniatures 28mm on eBay a bit pricey but so nice I'm looking to collect more. And use the Ral Patha ranges to add further characters and monsters etc.

So I became curious if any others out there used miniatures. I believe there was a dedicated range produced for Pendragon back in the early 1st Edition days.

Of which I discovered I still own the Arthurian Companion by Karr which has somehow survived the last 30 years in my shed and now rescued and back on my Bookshelves

  9. I'm sure we have all experienced this problem. Gamers that enjoy RPGs but don't share the passion of a certain game. Pandragon is a bit like this, it requires players that enjoy the setting, its not a hack and slash dungeon crawl with loads of monsters in each room and only the bare essence of a story-line, its a deep and rich setting with just as much effort in the rituals at court or the tournament as the actual adventure. I'm in a situation a bit like this, I have one friend who shares the same views on the game as I do. with this in mind I was thinking of starting an online game. Would this work? Would anyone be interested? May played with a video link. And id like your view on this??

Because they are! 😄  Almost straight adaptation from the excellent Book of Knights (Green Knight, 2000).  And I love the Genpei era -- almost always overlooked in favor of the Sengoku.  Around 2004 I was in talks with Greg and Arthaus about developing it fully, and around 2010 Greg was in talks with a Japanese author about something similar.  I wasn't aware there was a current project in development, but @sirlarkins, if you want a bundle of 15-year-old development notes, ah'm your huckleberry.

    !i!

Totally agree with you Ian the Gempei Period of Japan is by far the most interesting stage in Japan and the best suited for Roll Play with these rules IMHO
