  1. Hi Folks

In order to republish the P&BR Companions we need to get permission from some people in order to use pieces that they heavily collaborated on, or in a couple of cases did most of the work on

Otherwise, a few things will simply have to be left out, and others heavily or totally rewritten (which is certainly possible but time-consuming in an already-epic process)

PERMISSIONS STILL SOUGHT: Here are the names, if anyone can put me in touch with any of them that would be so appreciated:

    ## NO CONTACT DETAILS KNOWN:

    * Paul Sommer  - some excellent maps [I remember Paul as being exceptionally friendly and helpful, so if I can't locate him I will use his maps anyway, and if he reappears obviously he is due a free copy.]

    * Lowell Francis & Sherri L Stewart for big help with the Pavis Old Mint piece

    * Oliver Dickinson - letting me use his characters (the Rowdy Boys) as a Pavic Gang and seeing if he will let me keep his story from Shadows of Pavis in the series

    * Sergio Mascerenhas helped with some great ideas for Indagos Oasis

    * Vincent Jugie - significant assistance with the Horn Gate article

    * James Holden - significant assistance with the Morocanth of the River of Cradles article

    * Mitch Lockhart - Tales of the Kiertianni of Pavis County

    * Craig Pays - the original Ever-Burning Torches scenario that I adapted for TT17

    * Nick Davison - additional information for Kakstan's Art Museum scenario

    ## MESSAGE SENT (RESPONSE PENDING) If anyone knows these people and has more reliable access to them, please send them a note on my behalf. No responses received so far.

    * Mike Dawson - Troll Occupation Timeline, Red Stallions Heroband (original idea), and co-writing the Flintnail One Day House piece and the little Aldryami Planting Song ritual idea (both in TT9)

    ## PERMISSIONS EXTREMELY GRATEFULLY RECEIVED - YAY! :)

    * Pavis County was a joint creation between myself Jeff Richard, John Hughes and Dave Bell (not heard back from Jeff, and no trace of Dave, but their contribution while very helpful was not critical, so we are good to go with Pavis County! yay!)

    * Wesley Quadros - Orlanth Dragonfriend piece, and some great assistance (I think I have found him in BC, though his Glorantha website shut down a few years ago) [Tracked him down via internet sleuthery.] :)

    * Michael O'Brien for the original version of Jalmar Ironsword

    * James Frusetta for key assistance with the 'Pavic Variations on Troll Religions' piece and very helpful input into the Kaggroka Contests

    * Andrew Graham - The Fivewinds Gang

    * Martin Crim - Seven Masks of Pavis

    * Peter Johannson  - main-author of Zebra Fort piece, assisting with design of Opili subcult, and the bulk of the Real Inn article

    * Peter Johannson & Sten Ahrman for co-writing 'Trolls of the Rubble' with me, and also co-writing Opili's Fort scenario

    * Peter Maranci - The original Grey Company online piece

    * Sarah Evans - illustrations and cover for Rough Guide to Pavis City

    * Bo Rosen - piece on Old Pavic architecture and one of the Pavis County herobands

    * Alban Schmid and Christoph Kohring for the original Crimson Shadows over Prax scenario that I adapted for TT8 (sad to learn that Alban is no longer with us)

    * Eric Vanel - map of Prax

    * Mark Galeotti - Red Moon Over Pavis section in 'Masks Of Pavis', and a small piece on Lunar spies called 'Dustbowl Circus'

    * John R Hutchinson - significant assistance with the Dwarf Drinks article

    * Julian Lord - helped out significantly with the Uleria Cult piece

    * Simon Phipp - the Unicorn Quest & Joraz Kyrem Gains An Ally (TT9)

    * Mark Galeotti - Red Moon Over Pavis section in 'Masks Of Pavis', and a small piece on Lunar spies called 'Dustbowl Circus'

    * Darren Happens & Ingo Tschinke - co-authors with me of the New Pavis Knowledge Temple piece

    * Erik Nolander - co-writing Zebra Folk Of Pavis & Zebra Tribe of Pavis County & Prax

  2. All awesome

Yes, sounds like some good sources to reference

Timelines are always going to change. MGF rather than sticking to official timelines

I developed a lot of my work in consultation with Greg Stafford including the secrets of Pavis, but even he could have changed his mind later [13 March Edit: And I have found out that he did, but mostly that's good, cos a whole heap of ideas I discussed with Greg that were secrets at that time that he asked me not to reveal, are now no longer considered officially credible. So here we go!]

Basically I see Glorantha as part of the multiverse. :)

Maybe Argrath did some epic Pavis stuff in one version, but it was Peter Parker (I mean the Grey Company) in the timeline I am writing about :)

  3. I did hear briefly from MOB in regards to another topic.

Since he is King of Sun County as far as I am concerned, there seems little point in me creating a Sun County volume for the new P&BR Companion

So I asked if I could add adaptation notes for his work. IE How to adapt his publications to use as extra adventures in the P&BR Companion series

    No reinventing the wheel

These notes would be as short and simple as possible. Basically just describing how to somehow bring the P&BR PCs into those adventures in some kind of remotely realistic way (IE seconded in an official exchange from the Pavis Watch) and any other notes required to make sense of things

I havent had a chance to look at the SCounty publications on the Compendium yet, but I hope that is possible :)

(Might not be if they are focused on being only for SC Yelmalio worshippers)

  4. One thing that would be super useful - since I am immersed in literally days of editing and reformatting right now - is help with references to typical Praxian & Big Rubble creatures and denizens in current RQG publications

You know the kind of thing:

Typical Dark Troll - see pg XX in RQG Creatures Section (or in RQG Bestiary)

Rubble Runners - see pg XX in RQG Creatures Section (or in RQG Bestiary)

Typical Lunar Squaddie - - see pg XX in RQG Lunar Chapter

Obviously this is something I can do eventually, but it's another job that takes up time from the actual editing and writing new material, and so I was wondering if any people with current fluency in the new publications might be able to help?

I don't care how long you've been playing a given game, you're not an 'adventurer' till you've been to Gimpy's!

You know what, that phrase could capture everything about what grabbed me about the original boxed sets, and what led to the campaign that led to the P&BR Companions! :)

One thing that the revamped series will need is a bit more original adventure material in New Pavis. I know Gimpys' featured in my campaign, and just hope I find that material in the text of the Companions or I will have to write it again :)

  6. Started a new thread, since this one doesn't spell my name right :)

(That's not the main reason - my name isn't even in the title of the other thread. Just felt to start a new one as symbolic of this project starting to get off the ground.)

  7. Hi Folks

Thanks heaps for all the comments, encouragement, support, and practical assistance so far. All prompted by me finding some old unpublished Pavis material on a dusty XHD as I prepare to move house (and state) in a few weeks. Combined with (unknown to me) Fabian & Dario having been pondering the possibility of republishing for quite some time.

Problem was that much of the material was lost. So a huge thanks to those who have helped me recover text and images. I don't have it all back yet, but am well on the way. [Edit: I do have ALL the material back now as far as I can see.] :)

This project (the relaunch) is an insane idea. The amount of time and effort required requires madmen to be involved. Fortunately I am in a space where I am living alone for another few weeks, and have no huge commitments. A space I may not be in again ever. So I am donning my madman mask and putting in 10hr days to make this happen. Wish us luck!

Dario is sadly only able to be involved by providing his original art (for which we are awesomely grateful), but Fabian and I will continue with making this happen.

Anyway, I felt this discussion deserved it's own thread :)

Also relevant - those systems aren’t permitted on the Jonstown Compendium. If you did include Hero Wars or HeroQuest 1e stats, we’d ask you to remove them.

That is a fortunate coincidence of circumstances then :)

Yes, there is definitely a RQG Bestiary, lots of good stuff in that one. You might want to take a gander at the Red Book of Magic too. It has a bazillion spirit magic and rune magic spells. Including a lot of the rune spells from the cults in the RQ Classic Pavis & Big Rubble and Cult Compendium books that aren't in the RQG main book.

    Fantastic. Thanks

Yes if they are available as pdfs I may well just buy them for that well-needed option of inserting as many page references and quick adaptation notes as possible into the work under revision

Rather than spending valuable time on inventing stats. Time that could be spent proofing and editing the actual content (and the extra content that needs to be written to fill the gaps)

I convert RQ:G adventures to 13G adventures frequently for my campaign "Heroes of Dragon Pass", advertised on these forums. I'm running Ernalda's Temple from the Korolstead and with 6 players it has condensed down to 1 Montage, 1 Skill Challenge, and 1 Fight per session. The fight with the vough, brollachans, and water elementals was last session, the fight with the vampires is next session.

Note vampires. To balance the fight, I had to promote the Earth priestess from long dead corpse to Vampire Spawn, because otherwise my 6 @ 5th level PCs will defeat a 10th level Vampire in a walkover.  😆

In short, converting a RQ:G adventure to 13G takes a little mucking about with the scenes, and the monsters, and the story. I've posted a conversion of "The Hollow" on these forums for 1st level PCs and you can see that some of the fights in the RQ:G adventure become Skill Challenges in 13G.

    Thank you

    Good to know

  11. Thanks for the input folks

    Very helpful :)

    >>Ian's adventures are far more suited to RQ than than HQ:G or Questworlds.<<

Yes, the style/feel is absolutely classic RQ, although I used originally a rules system based on Stormbringer (stripped down version of RQ rules), then graduated to a D20 system that I designed myself, that was even a bit more streamlined and quicker to use.

    >>I think Ian misspoke when he mentioned "RQ6" -- that's an easy mistake to make, if you've been out of circulation for a bit.<<

Yes, I really have little idea, though starting to get it now :)

    >>It's RQ (RQG) that's undoubtedly carrying the Glorantha banner these days!<<

OK great, so now I know what is most popular: RQG will be the core system we will present the books in

    >>you don't have to provide complete stats for everything in your JC submissions. (I mean, you can if you want to, but it's probably a bit OTT). If a NPC is only interesting because of their Bargain skill, don't bother telling us their birthday and shoe size (kinda thing). <<

Preaching to the choir, sir. This idea I am already behind :)

Anything a GM can make up in a split second and doesn't matter in the grander scheme of things will not be included! :) That was always going to be the way

I will get the sourcebook for RQG and see if there are any Bestiaries or whatever. So in this same time-saving vein, expect to see a lot of "Refer to pXX in 'RQG book' for examples of this. For background/stock characters and situations. Since GMs of the system will mostly own those books anyway

I would like to include other systems too, most particularly QW cos it seems to be popular. However, time required already might preclude doing that. This problem could potentially be solved if some QW user is willing to volunteer their time (in return for book copies if they do a lot of work) to convert whatever I write up for RQG into QW. (Again only the main stats/contest notes required.)

I would also like to include 13AG because I like D20 systems (altho the one I created was super-streamlined), but once again the sheer amount of work already to do the rerelease likely precludes this. Cos I would have to learn and test the system. Once more if someone who already uses this system was happy to go through and convert my RQG notes into 13AG I would be only too happy and could offer free copies of books in return.

I don't plan on retaining HW or HQ rules ideas/ stats for a combined reason: (i) We don't already have either system in place throughout. If we did I would leave it there, but we don't - so consistency would require a LOT of time spent writing more of these stats to fill the gaps, (ii) My sense is that neither system is popular anyway anymore (please correct me if I am wrong, in which case again I'd be looking for a volunteer); and finally (iii) I <looks for diplomatic/polite words> 'strongly disliked' both of these systems and would personally not want to be involved with them again. Just personal preference - others likely loved them

The Jonstown Compendium allows only Runequest: Roleplaying in Glorantha, Runequest: Classic and Questworlds: Glorantha material at the moment. 13G, or 13th Age in Glorantha, is an adaptation of 13th Age's Archmage engine to Glorantha, but due to I believe licensing stuff it's not allowed on the JC.

Runequest: Roleplaying in Glorantha (https://www.chaosium.com/runequest-roleplaying-in-glorantha-hardcover/) is pretty much the Gloranthan rpg at the moment, as no Glorantha content has been released for Questworlds yet and 13th Age in Glorantha hadn't seen any support since its release. If you know how to do RQ2 stats at least you should be fairly comfortable with RQG, as long as you can figure out Runes and Passions. And to be fair, even if there was Questworlds: Glorantha material out now there's no real need to make stats or anything, it's effectively a statless/make-your-own-stats system.

    Ah hah

    OK

I am on a steep learning curve here

So it looks as if then we should provide regular RQ stats as per your link above

With the option to also include RQ13 D20 stats too, which would mean more work for me, but I am drawn to it because of my history of running this campaign with a D20 system (since as noted below this is now allowed on the Compendium)

No, 13th Age Glorantha has been allowed on the Jonstown Compendium for some time now. It was announced here:

    Awesome to know

I created myself from scratch, and used, a D20 system for the last several real time years of the Old Pavis Campaign that the books are based on

So it feels like we are going even further back into our authentic roots!!! :)

I might even have a whole bunch of my D20 stats somewhere still

Wonder if they will match the RQ13 system

n.b. "RQ6" is, conventionally, the TDM version (rebranded now as "Mythras" (and going gangbusters!)) since Chaosium took the RQ material back in-house.

There is no license for TDM / RQ6 content on the Jonstown Compendium; that is another company's IP.  D&D5e mechanics, and Tekumel, and etc, are all similarly excluded, for the same legal reasons.

The current edition of RQ is usually written as "RQG" (sometimes RQ:G or RQ:RiG; occasionaly even RQ7).

I *believe* however -- if you were so inclined -- it's now OK to include 13G content (stats) in the JC; I for one think it'd be very cool to do so!

Can u define 13G please. Sorry to be so out of the loop.

Even more specifically, can you tell me what popular rules mechanics for Gloranthan gaming ARE ok to include in Jonstown releases

    Thanks very much

As a potential customer, I agree. If I ever actually get an RQ campaign off the ground it will likely be Pavis based. It's been one of my favorite places ever since the original boxed set.

Yes, me too. Those original creators were genius's. I remember when I was in my early teens a friend had both boxed sets and reading through them I was just like: "Wow!"

  16. As always, the road to publication has many challenges, but Fabian, Dario & I look to be forming an unholy triumvirate intent on redesigning and re-releasing the Pavis & Big Rubble Companion series in the way it ideally would have been in the first place

Bit more tightening of editing, filling in some gaps, and putting all the pieces in a logical order for running a campaign

It's going to take many hours of work, but feels manageable over the next few months

If anyone is super-proficient at RQ6 or QW stats this is the one skill-set none of us have. I can learn it for sure, but with the massive number of days of editing ahead the help would be appreciated. I remember back in the day creating stats in the systems I knew was as easy as eating a piece of toast :)

If someone was able to do a lot of stats for us then definitely a free book could be offered at the end of it all

  17. Thanks Nick. Yes that is looking like the most likely option, and I don't think there are any key parts that I am not sole or main author of. And we have the main illustrator interested too. Other images and the few incidental pieces can be replaced or just left out if we can't get in contact with people.

  18. Yes, I am talking to Fabian about the practicalities of this. We wouldn't just re-release them though, but update them as well. So a fair bit of work, but feels worth it to get the material out there again. Anyway, practicalities talks have begun

  19. @Darius West If I remember correctly and aren't just making it up for the fun of it, Iffinbix was one of those cult leader, inspirational speaker types, whose main motivation was to spread the popularity of a healthy breakfast cereal he had created. And then things just got out of hand

  20. Hey Grahame

I found the Wedding & Liberation and have edited them together, and made some corrections and added small new bits.

I also had a final mini-campaign that I had forgotten altogether, where the Lunars (a couple of seasons before they lost Boldhome to the dragon) attempted a massive armed reprisal on Prax, and marched on the newly revitalised Old City

I have no notes anymore, but I added the detailed outline of that to the new pdf, since I remember the essence of it well

More than happy to send you a copy of the new version

And yes the pdf of Man for All Seasons would be awesome :)
