  1. I haven't actually ran a game yet, but I think this is a really nice approach to take with RoL, especially with players who haven't read the books (and even with those who have to be honest.)

I think you could work the required downtime into the game fairly easily, having their main duties take up time - nurses or other emergency service workers spending weeks on long shifts or overtime consuming big chunks of time, only leaving enough for sleeping and some light research before the next game session takes place would be a believable example. The boxer having to prepare for a major fight, going off to a training camp could be another.

I'm sure in one of the books Peter talks about his training routine, mentioning a couple of hours practice a day maximum for learning magic forma, the rest being reading, translating stuff from Latin to English etc.. So I think there are definitely ways that you can work their training into the narrative and have time progress for all the characters in some kind of montage effect, with some working while others learn spells and other required skills.

  2. Kind of related, how would you rule the effects of the spell Vultus Occulto, when viewed on CCTV or similar media?

Does the magic work only for 10 minutes regardless of how the caster is viewed or would the effect continue once their image is captured 'on film'? Or, would it only work if being observed directly?

If the camera doesn't have a silicon chip, it should be fine (but that would probably mean a video cassette in the camera or a cable to a video recorder nearby). If it has a silicon chip and there's power to it, the camera will be toast.

As to the computer hard-drive, have at look at page 177 in the rulebook to see whether or not it would survive.

Thanks Lynne. I'm thinking then that and old fashioned camcorder, or a really old CCTV camera would be okay, but modern ones would be fried.

So, we all know that using magic damages or destroys computer chips, but what effect would it have on things like CCTV systems?

I've got an idea for a Case File, but I'm not 100% sure how the use of magic would affect something like a CCTV camera and the recording system where the footage would be stored.

If the camera (assuming it's a modern, digital camera system) is right next to where a magic spell is cast then I'm confident the camera would be destroyed, but if the hard-drive is located at the other end of the building, some 10+ meters away, would that be destroyed too? Or would the footage be recoverable?

Would older 'video' cameras with tape as opposed to digital recording equipment be okay? Or would they be wiped out too?

The reason the US book will be first is that it's all the goodness we couldn't fit into the core rules! (It's already written and just needs a final editing polish and artwork to go with it)

So, the impatient part of me is wondering when this might be released? Do we have any idea on the schedule for this?

  6. I'd agree with Cloud64. I'm up to book 6 in the series, but I would say players new to the RoL world should have very little trouble adapting to the setting. The suggestion to create non-magical characters is a very good one. Introduce magic slowly to build the feeling of something being not quite right in a case perhaps, then hit them with the 'there's a whole world of magic hidden from you' to freak the characters out a little.

  7. Has anyone heard of any character sheets for RoL on Roll20?

I've seen people mention the BRP sheet, but it's not a match for the stats and skills used in this game and I'm not familiar enough with BRP to know the specific differences. Anyone created a sheet themselves or know of an 'official' one that's available?

  8. I can't answer for Chaosium products specifically, but I've recently bought from a UK online shop (Zatu Games) and had good experiences with them regarding the Bits & Mortar scheme. It takes a few days, but the half dozen books I've purchased in the last year have all had the relevant PDFs provided after ordering the physical product.

  9. I've got an idea for a couple of Case Files centred around the operations of a drug baron operating close to the Thames.

The head of the operation is actually a Prussian noble who moved to England in the mid 1800s. He is a vampire of sorts, feeding on the extreme emotions of those addicted to his drugs.

His operation comes to the attention of Falcon when the revenant of one of his gangs victims comes seeking revenge.
