Whereas I consider RQ:RiG's unified parry/attack %age to be the big mistake vs separate parry/attack for each weapon. After all, it technically implies someone with <x>Bow @ 75% can also parry with that bow at 75%... But who in their right mind would even attempt to train a bow parry (must be a noble who can afford all the broken/damaged bows 😈 ). Parry with a bow in desperation, yes -- but it should be at a fairly low level, since it just isn't done normally.

Counterpoint: is the combined attack/parry into a single value markedly different from non-combat skills which may include both theory and application of knowledge, and at advanced levels the generation of new approached? Fine degrees of differentiation of combat skill types (sword-fighting would be the sum of defensive and offensive application for example), versus a broader skill definition for other skills.  🙂

That does have it's advantages as well. A BRP or Mythras prodcut has the advantage of a pre-existing fan base that you can try to tap into, but going your own way with a different, but  similar game system gives you more freedom. You can adjust all sorts of things without the same sort of scrutiny you'd get if you altered an "official" product.

That is what i hoping for essentially, plus I have always enjoyed the elegance of the BRP skills experience mechanic

Oh, and before I forget it again, there is Classic Fantasy. That really was an official BRP supplement, geared to an OSR FRPG style of play. It eventually went over to Mythras, but originally was a BRP product. BRP Rome did something similar, and the Mythas version is very similar to the BRP one.

While I do not like Mongoose RuneQuest, and prefer BRP to Mythras, I must admit that MRQ and Mythras do have some good setting and sorucebooks for them (thanks to some very good writers), and that such books are among the easiest things to adapt to BRP, as 85% of the game stats are the same or close enough to work. . So if you see something for those games that seems interesting, it might be worth picking up and adapting to BRP, or at least use it as a reference.

Oh, and you might want to look at a few of Chasoiums earlier games. Stormbringer, RingWorld, RuneQuest 3 Viking and Land of the Ninja are all heavily BRP compatible (BRP got most of it's game mechanics from RQ, Stormbringer, Magic World, Call of Cthulhu and such), so ihey might serve as examples of the adaptability of BRP, as well as examples of what settings have already been covered in some form. The third Viking rulebook for a BRP family is going to be compared, fairly or otherwise,) to the two pre-exsting ones. On the other hand, the first BRP book on Naval Battles during the Battleship Era won't have that problem-at least not to the same extent.

As this may become a self-published project, I am mindful of the exclusions of SRD. At its core SRD is a better fit for what I have in mind than Mythras as th underlying engine.

The add-ons/changes will be a psychic powers system and changes to combat.

  4. Hi guys. I have been away from the forums and BRP for a few years, but recently my brain has been percolating a new campaign setting idea which I may eventually self-publish.

To that end, I would like to see some examples of games/settings published under the BRP SRD OGL - can you point me to such examples (not Mythras thanks, which looks good, but deviates from the DNA of BRP in instances I want to keep the BRP DNA intact).

    Thanks in advance. 🙂

  5. Its actually more than likely that it will be available from there. Chaosium has been posting a lot of recent and library titles to DriveThru. It might take a few weeks though. Chaosium is only about 5 people at the moment.

I also wonder whether they (Chaosium) will wait until the sell-through physical copies they have before allowing PoD at Drive Thru?

  6. When building up to a brand-new campaign do you find that you have accumulated more notes than you thought? :)

I have had a year-long gestating project (that has not even started gaming!), and have started pulling together all my bits and pieces of notes (I tend to type stuff to small documents rather than written notes). Around 6000 words from the bits and pieces already! Lot of work to do, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount I have done so far. Maybe in the next 6 months my psychics campaign will finally kick off! :)

So how do you GM's go about your campaign development?

  7. Really happy to see The Green and witchcraft in there; 2 Monographs I was interested in but hadn't picked up.

On the downside you can only rate and review items you purchase (which is understandable to maintain credibility of reviews), and not itmes not bought through Drive Thru.

Still, I foresee some upcoming orders for me. :)

  8. I'm on vacation in Casper, Wyoming (don't ask) at the moment, but I thought Psionics was covered to some degree in Swords of Cydoria?

If you want an unconventional response, I pretty much used the system from Psi-World (the old FGU game) to plug in a psionic rebel character for BRP years ago. It worked okay, though the character was almost a minor super hero in effect.

Thanks; primarily looking to build on the base BRP psionics so wil investigate Swords of Cydoria. :)

  9. Hi guys; working on a campaign setting for my gaming group which will heavily feature psionics, and while working up some extra rules/refining rules I had planned to use for something else, it has only now occurred to me to throw the question out to you guys if any of the monographs feature expanded rules for psionics?

    Thanks in advance.
