  1. I know.

    I've listened to it. :-)

This is (part of the reason) why I'm proud to have him as my friend and colleague. He summed up RQ's history perfectly, and his ruminations on our own relationship are spot-on. Its honest, straight forward, philosophical and, well, that's what Pete's like.

I don't think very many readers of these forums were aware of the podcast and I was impressed.

  2. Rod,

Thanks for answering my fatigue questions.

I love Classic Fantasy and I will be running it for my group for the first time on July 28, 2012.

However, I have a few more questions:

    1. Morale: I have seen the statistic in creature stats in some module conversions, but it is never explained. When do monsters need to make moral checks? How is morale calculated?

    2. Alignment: The CF book discusses “alignment improvement rolls” in the example on page 15 of the book, but it never explains exactly what an “alignment improvement roll” is. Do you merely subtract your current alignment pints from 100 and roll under that result to improve alignment?

Also, the CF book talks about getting a set number of points based on character actions. However, the Allegiance system from Basic Roleplaying pg 315 has the player roll 1D6 for improvement, as with any other skill. Which system is correct? A combination?

  3. My own personal preference ( being on the west coast of N.America) is for around 18:00 GMT on Saturday or Sunday. If you are GMT+2 that would put it in your evening ? You could always post more than one slot on the calendar and run whatever fills up.

I would prefer a scifi. It would be nice to have a change from the fantasy game I GM on a weekly basis. I'm reserving the weekend for virtual gaming, so this time slot would be a good way to start off the morning. :)

I am also in California and would prefer a convenient west coast time. Saturday after 5pm is good and all day Sunday.

  4. There was talk about it a while back, then nothing. I doubt it will happen now that Magic World is on the horizon. I still own the rights to Classic Fantasy however and have been thinking of other options. I still plan on having volumes two and three come out as monographs, but may do my own thing with them as well. Anything from converting it to one of the open source D100 rulesets to making my own.

    Rod

I am not that impressed by what I read about Magic World. It sounds like a mere reworking of Elric/Stormbringer without the Young Kingdoms. Magic World won't scratch the same nostalgic itch that Classic Fantasy scratches.

  5. Rod,

I have some questions about fatigue in Classic Fantasy.

    1. How do you handle fatigue checks for monsters, especially large groups of monsters? For example, if the party is facing 5 kobolds and 1 kobold chief, would you roll stamina checks for each kobold individually or one roll for all five? Would you make a separate check for the chief?

    2. Do you bother with fatigue for non-humanoid monsters like dragons and insects?

    3. Why reduce fatigue for injury? The character already will suffer the negative effects of having a limb reduced to zero or whatever and the fatigue penalty seems like piling on. It also requires a lot more bookkeeping for large monster groups.

  6. I'd love to find a print copy of Classic Fantasy but it looks like Chaosium isn't stocking it anymore (only PDF). Any other places I might find a print copy? I realize I can download the PDF and print it myself but I'd honestly prefer spending a few more dollars and having the real book.

I'm dying for a good old fashioned dungeon crawler. I've been playing Palladium Fantasy lately and I surprisingly enjoy the Palladium system more than I remember, but it's a bit of stat overload. And D20 stuff just gives me nosebleeds...

I just printed my pdf double sided and put it into a 3-ring binder. Works great!

  7. Man! I was super excited for about 2 minutes until I saw the price. 62 dollars! That's a lot of money for a rpg. How many pages is it?

I love pdf's but using them to create characters and look up rules on the spot is a pain in the neck.

Maybe I'm just not up to date on the rpg scene but 62 dollars! Man! I'm bummed.

    My 2 cents,

    Michael

Mine was $60.00 not $62.00. The price is reasonable considering that you are getting the printed hardbound book and the PDF. As a comparison, the Pathfinder Core Rulebook costs $49.99 and the PDF is an additional $9.99 (and that system is shit) so the price of RQ6 is competitive.

  8. I revisited CoC this past week and I hadn’t played it in ages. I had picked up the supplement CoC Dark Ages (awesome setting) and was GM’ing. The game was going incredible, and even skill fails had become a great source of drama. As many of the previous people commented, it’s how the GM describes a fail. My issue, however, was with combat. One of the investigators had a blunt weapon skill of 55%, which isn’t terrible, but the fight just descended into a slapstick comedy of errors with the investigator AND the creature rolling “fails/misses” for about 12 combat rounds. Finally, my creature (a resurrected girl from the village) hit a critical fail and I simply had her fall onto her knife! I really enjoy BRP’s simple system and that it doesn’t concern itself with intricacies, but I’d like some suggestions on how to handle fighting a little better because it seems we hit a wall. And yes, I know that CoC isn’t about fighting , but since there is so little combat, I want to ensure the fights that are present are dramatic and memorable. Thanks! :)

I recommend that you buy a copy of Classic Fantasy. It contains some great rules for miniature combats including facing rules, zone of control, effects of terrain on movement and line of sight, better tactical movement rules and initiative rules.

These rules alone are worth the price of the book and they can be used in any BRP game, but they work especially well in fantasy games.

Classic Fantasy is only $16.47 at DriveThruRPG:

  9. The RuneQuest Archives on DrivethruRPG have been a terrific success. Thank you to all our customers for making it so.

By popular request we've added two additional titles to the Archives - both $1.00 each:

Guilds, Factions and Cults (MRQ1): creating societies, guilds and building cults from scratch, including metagame rules for running such organisations within a campaign.

Trolls: Guide to the Uz (MRQ1): rounding out the Glorantha races, this is an in-depth look at Glorantha's trolls, the Uz; their society, habits, species and gods.

Do take a look - at these prices they're unmissable additions to the collection.

    Loz,

I also saw Vikings, Price of Honour, and Land of the Samurai at DriveThruRPG for $1.00.

  10. I would guess that they are pricing their product with greater insight.

He also adds his definition of hobby game (rpg):

I find that as I have aged, I have less and less time to devote to preparing a game. I don't have the time to invent an entire world for every campaign. Doesn't mean I enjoy gaming and rping less, but it does mean I will steer towards a game that has prepared scenarios etc.

True, but when you really age you will retire and you'll have more time to play RPGs :)

  11. I have a question about the invisibility spell on page 98 of the BRP rules.

The second paragraph of the spell description states that :

"Your character must concentrate on the spell and

must do no more than walk or speak. Fighting, taking

injury, using another power, performing some athletic

maneuver, or similar distractions will break the effects

and cause the invisible item to become visible once

    more."

However the third paragraph of the description contradicts the second paragraph as follows:

"There are few limitations to what actions your char-

acter can commit while Invisible. He or she can move,

attack, flee, or stand still as long as the spell is active."

So which part of the spell description is correct?

I remember that RQ considered the invisibility an active spell and required concentration by the caster to

maintain the spell and this is the way we handled it. We figured that the second paragraph was referring

to the spell caster and the third paragraph to the target of the spell.

    What are your thoughts?

  12. Not to piss in anyone's breakfast, but FG is sluggish overhyped software. I have owned FG for about six years and used it extensively. I own a number of paid add ons, including the BRP and CoC mods. IME, FG causes a ton of headaches and makes online games (which are already slower paced than in person ones) grind to a near halt. I have had a lot more luck with Skype/G+ and a shared whiteboard than FG.

I know what Skype is, but what is G+? And where do I get a shared whiteboard?

  13. The discussion was about the various d100 systems, and compared with

the other d100 systems recently published the $ 48.90 do not seem com-

petitive at all. To give an example, the BRP Core Rules PDF costs about

2,800 % of the Legend Core Rules PDF. ;)

True. But Legend is only a fantasy game, while BRP can be played in any setting.

  14. The problem with that though is not everyone can read PDFs comfortably. For some people, such as myself, reading a long text on a backlit screen is very uncomfortable, and unfortunately PDFs don't work very well on ereaders yet.

Good Point. So why don't you call in or fax your order to Chaosium at the following numbers:

    phone 510-583-1000

    fax 510-583-1101

Don't forget to tell Charlie that Silent Bob sent you :)
