Everyday Heroes seems to be a D&D/d20 variant...?
I'd ask for info on that on another forum; something general, not system-specific... RPG.net, ENWorld, etc.

I understood the question about "other games" and at least some of the responses to that question to include things outside of the BRP family.  My question was a follow-up to that.

  2. I was listening to XTC's Oranges and Lemons for the first time in an age, and I was struck by how much the lyrics to "Across This Antheap" rang of cosmic horror.

    Spoiler

    Soldiers, workers, slaves and farmers,
    Nurses, queens and drones.
Wish they'd leave my head tonight,
    Let me rest my bones.

A billion feet sound just like a billion drums.
A bed is creaking as the messiah comes.
The cars are crashing and the bacon is hacked.
The coffin's lowered and the lunches get packed.
Still segregating 'cause we insects are too proud.
Doesn't matter what colour of cat you are there's no dogs allowed.

And the screaming sky won't let me sleep.
The stars are laughing at us,
As we crawl on and on across this antheap.

War planes go over but no wages go 'round.
A sign goes up to say hey we're twin towned.
The dough is rising but no bread will be baked.
The fur is genuine but the orgasm's faked.
We're spending millions to learn to speak porpoise,
When human loneliness is still a deafening noise.

And the screaming sky won't let me sleep.
The stars are laughing at us,
As we crawl on and on across this antheap.

    Soldiers, workers, slaves and farmers,
    Nurses, queens and drones.
Wish they'd leave my head tonight,
And let me rest my bones.
And all the world's babies are crying still.
While all the police cars harmonize with power drills.
As jets and kettles form a chord with screeching gulls.
Accompanied by truncheons keeping time on human skulls.

And the screaming sky won't let me sleep.
The stars are laughing at us,
As we crawl on and on past lovers who'll leap.
On and on past widows who'll weep.
On and on no more than skin deep.
On and on across this antheap.

How about you?  Any songs you recommend for some good old-fashioned Lovercraftian despair?!

  3. That's a tough one.  Barker seems so different from Lovecraft to me, I'd have some trouble picking equivalents.  I suppose Leviathan is a bit Lovecraftian in some ways.  And the Cenobites were humans once, so perhaps they could be cultists who have acquired enough magic / incomprehensible science that they've achieved Cenobite-like powers.  They've invented their own mythology around Leviathan, not realizing that they don't really know anything about what it really is, but have created the puzzles to test people for recruitment and/or sacrifice.

  4. Nothing to contribute yet, but interested in the discussion.  I've read the chase rules, written up a decent summary, and hope to try them out soon.  I'll admit, I'm a bit skeptical, but then again, I've never had a lot of love for chase rules in any system.  Still, I'll run them as written before making any judgments.  🙂

    Personal tastes are personal tastes.
It can be really hard to put them into words.

Indeed, which is why it's always strange to me when someone asks me to do just that.  😄

I can understand that, I asked because Barak earlier mentioned that he felt a skill-based system was "a better fit for talkien's middle earth", which to me implied he wanted to stick to canon, though if he wants to be more lax with magic then all power to him.

I would like to know though, if you don't mind, what the appeal of middle earth is to you once you add in regular FRPG trappings? To me, the subtlety of its magic is one of the major differences between it and much of modern fantasy, and if you make spellcasters who can fireball and heal and so on a regular thing it removes a lot of the charm.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to explain why I find some things fun.  🙂.  I liked ME, but I had no desire to recreate the books for the purposes of gaming.  I liked the idea of gaming in ME, but wanted higher action and magic.  MERP fit the bill.  Sorry: that's the best I can do.

I guess my question is if you're going to be playing a middle earth campaign, why do you need a spellcasting system? Only the elves and ainur (plus a few non-elf relatives) have real magic, and very little of what Tolkien described is anything like the flashy spells of most FRPGs.

Some folks, myself included, were interested in playing a FRPG in ME without feeling like we were limited to canon, and were happy to take some liberties in the name of fun.

This is my current thinking as well... Though some might argue the INT roll is 'part' of the SAN roll sequence and therefore it shouldn't be allowed.

Hmm, that's interesting, I hadn't thought about it that way.  I could definitely see a legit GM ruling either way.  I'd probably stick with the most bare minimum literal interpretation, and allow the INT roll, if only to keep my player happy.  😄.   Very curious to hear if there's an official ruling, though.

Just as an FYI, I had thought that these edits had been made to the original files and thus didn't think to look here.

I'm going through these and seeing which ones are still unresolved and they'll be in an upcoming corrected version.

Thanks.  I actually posted in the corrections thread about this, but my post was deleted, so I assumed MOB had directed your attention to it.
